EDIT - Also, WTF nothing from The Flaming Lips? Flaming Lips is a gap that needs to be plugged, for shame though I don't really know any of their stuff particularly well, even though Radcliffe and Maconie play them quite a lot on Radio 6 and have had them as guests a couple of times. Suggestions for the Flaming Lips track are welcome. As for R.E.M. - the track I had on the list until last week for them was the impossibly wonderful live version of Country Feedback with Neil Young's mesmerising performance. But then I was cooking at the weekend and I listened to all of Green whilst I cooked and remembered how awesome it was and with great reluctance replaced Country Feedback with Turn You Inside Out - Stipe does intelligent anger so well. But yeah, I could pick a different R.E.M. track every day of the week for a month or two, quite easily. Incidentally, Stipe has consistently said that Country Feedback is his favourite R.E.M. song. |

There are some real gems on all of their last five albums, but they are quite inconsistent and the weaker tracks on them lurch alarmingly towards being outright 'below average' or even 'poor' at times. That said, a few years ago I listened to their entire canon back-to-back in the car over the course of a couple of weeks' worth of drives to and from work, and their output overall is astonishingly good. In fact, that's something I need to do again at some point, listen to every studio album they've ever put out, but this time assemble a 'Best of R.E.M' Spotify playlist, assuming all their albums are actually on Spotify. One thing I have noticed is that even where an artist is on Spotify and looks to the casual observer to be complete, there can be gaps in the collection. Duran Duran and Chumbawamba spring to mind. (The 'Pop Trash' album by Duran Duran is missing, and both 'Shhh' and 'Anarchy' by Chumbawamba are missing.) |

Now up to 200 tracks, the rate of additions has obviously slowed down as every new track has to be a new artist, and replacements for existing tracks are now happening frequently as well. I shall continue to work on it, currently got it on shuffle play in the car, which is helping to identify weak links for changes. https://open.spotify.com/user/chopleytu ... vNwj9dyYF7 ZOMG Spoiler! Post subject: | Re: Spotify - Free music streaming thingy |
Here's a shitheel thing that Spotify does, it secretly caches everything you 'stream' to a hidden folder buried away at: C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Spotify\Data This had grown to nearly 10GB on my PC, which when you're running on a 119GB SSD as your system drive, is a fucking lot. (I'd noticed my SSD capacity going further and further into the red, and was wondering what was causing it, one Treesize later and I had my culprit.) Note that it does this irrespective of where you set Spotify's offline cache to be, which I had already configured to be on a data drive, but the offline cache is not the same thing as its secret online cache. (You can understand conceptutally why they do it, since it saves you downloading the same songs every time you listen to them, reducing the load on Spotify's servers.) Note I used the word 'downloading' there, as monitoring the behaviour of this folder I observed that as soon as you start 'streaming' a song, what it actually does is immediately download the song (in an encrypted format) to this folder, and plays it from there. There is absolutely no way you can stop this behaviour, you can add a line to a buried away config file to set the data folder to a max size in megabytes, at which point Spotify will start to 'churn' the data in this folder as required, but fundamentally Spotify won't work unless that folder is there at its default path and it can write to it. Anyway, MKLINK seemed to offer a handy solution with its ability to create directory junctions, and I can confirm it works perfectly. If you ever come across the same problem, then a command such as this (modified for your username and preferred new location) will do the job. (Run from an elevated command prompt, make sure Spotify is closed (not minimised) and delete the actual data folder before running the command as MKLINK creates the junction when run.) Code: mklink /J "C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Spotify\Data" "G:\SPOTIFYSECRET" (Note that after a couple of hours of listening to music after I'd made the change, the SPOTIFYSECRET folder had already grown to 545MB, so it's quite a greedy bastard.) |

Mr Dave wrote: Or you could put your appdata as a whole to a more sensible location if you have a small system disk. This is literally the first time it's ever been a problem, I appreciate a lot of stuff uses the appdata folder but I've never seen anything consume it like Spotify does, which is unsurprising considering what it does with it. Utterly fucking shit piece of application design really, especially considering you can already specify where it puts offline files through the standard UI. |

Whilst Motorcycle Emptiness is a fine track everyone's heard it a million times already, it's kind of your go-to Manics track, and I'll often try to have less obvious choices on the list for any given artist (but not always). Also, it's not really a great track to have on in the car, as I discovered the other day when its turn came round on the playlist. |

250 tracks. All unique artists. (Cheevo?) Obviously the rate of additions is slowing quite considerably now, but new tracks from formerly unrepresented artists are still being added, existing tracks are being changed, and the overall order is still getting shuffled around quite a bit too. I'm not even remotely trying to be 'cool' (whatever that is) so the Spice Girls' 'Viva Forever' is in there, because it's just such a lovely pop tune, and Mel C's 'I Turn To You' is listed as well (for the same reason albeit with the darker edge she brought as a solo artist, and it's a splendid track with trancey vibes), plus there are now a smattering of straightforward trance tracks included because trance is timelessly awesome and at the end of the day this is mostly for me and Mrs Hearthly to have music we like to listen to on demand - and if anyone else likes it that's cool. As ever though, I don't believe for one second it's perfect and/or complete, and it never will be - so suggestions are always appreciated. https://open.spotify.com/user/chopleytu ... vNwj9dyYF7 ZOMG Spoiler! Cheers Curio I'll give those a try I'm very much aware that a lot of the selection is sort of what you'd expect from a bloke in his early 40s and that could do with being addressed. Radio 6 is excellent for getting to hear new stuff, or rather, it was, until one day the news came on whilst Jnr was in the room and she heard something that really upset her and now I can't have Radio 6 on whilst she's around, and since we're usually in the same room that's pretty much knocked Radio 6 on the head. I mean, why have a graphic report about a woman getting her throat slit open in the middle of a fucking afternoon fucking radio show? |

I too will check out this recommendations, thanks Curiosity. Was already a big fan of Lousy Connection (love those rolling trumpet parps) so will check out others. Weirdly, we had the Chopley playlist on heavy rotation during our holiday in France. I'd say I enjoyed about 50% of it, which isn't a bad hit rate. Could do without being reminded of the Cardigans, though. My (not at all leftfield but nevertheless excellent) jukebox additions to the list would be: Fight Like Apes - Something Global Futureheads - Hounds of Love Pet Shop Boys - Always on My Mind Erasure - A Little Respect Beastie Boys - Skills to Pay the Bills Super Furry Animals - Chupacabras The Hold Steady - Same Kooks Nena - 99 Luftballoons Aztec Camera - Somewhere in My Heart Smashing Pumpkins - Jellybelly Fuck Buttons - Brainfreeze |

There is a limit to offline files at 3,333, which is more understandable. There is some chat about it here: https://community.spotify.com/t5/Live-I ... i-p/733759 Spotify seem to justify it by saying only 1% of users are affected, but surely those are power users who are more likely than not to be big music aficinados. Had this for a while as got a year free when I upgraded my wife's phone deal Never going back I now have it as the primary music service on the Echo. I will still have the smaller Amazon Prime music library as that is lumped with Prime. I've moved all my MP3's on the NAS to some hard drives as its no longer worth the hassle of tagging them. Love the play lists, we have been watching a show called Snowfall that is set in the 1980's just as crack cocaine starts to become a big issue. It has great music and I just searched for the show and there was all the music from the in a playlist First paid service that does everything I want |
