I love Christmas. I get to ride through town on my carriage and throw pennies to grateful orphans, spreading cheer whereever I go.

This morning there was someone hanging outside our office door. As people were going in, he said 'Merry Christmas'. I had my headphones on and was in my usual Monday morning automaton mode so I didn't hear this festive greeting. What I did hear, as the door shut was:

"I SAID MERRY FUCKING CHRISTMAS!"

Joy to the world.

Oh.

My electricity direct debit hadn't come out of my account like I thought it had, so my £100 I had for buying food/presents/petrol before Christmas is actually £20.

That's a... problem.

There's enough food in the house for dinners/breakfasts until Christmas. But I may have to skip lunch for now. No bad thing coming up to Christmas, I suppose. Petrol I might be able to make last until Christmas Eve, which should, maybe, hopefully be pay day. How I'm going to get presents for three or four people and make normal day-to-day required purchases for the next ten days, though, I don't know. I guess if I get paid on Christmas Eve I could pop in to TK Maxx after work...

I hate it when this happens, I used to get that all the time. In the end I opened another bank account (with the same bank) and moved all my direct debits to that, and now I just dump £HOW_MUCH_DEBT?! into it everytime I get paid then forget about it.

Yeah, I had to up the amount I'm paying a month and that seems to have moved the direct debit a week from where it was.

The stupid thing is, I thought I'd seen it next to my Council Tax when I checked my account online last week and must have just assumed it was there instead of actually seeing it.

Harumph.

I recently switched to Virgin Media, giving me broadband, TV and phone all in one.

So far, so good.

But I just got a bill from BT charging me a penalty of 78 quid for switching!!!

Now, I've been with BT at this address for well over a year, and monthly line rental is only about 11 quid... where the hell has this charge come from?

Anyone got any ideas before I call them up and rant?

Sounds like, for whatever reason, they thought you were still in contract with them. Standard BT contracts used to be a year but I think some of the "hey, get free weekend and evening calls!" promotions from a while back had an 18 month tie-in.

They don't give a shit as long as the building's insured. Also, electric cooker so inherently less likely* to set the place on fire than a gas cooker.

Your bro will know all this but as long as there was a cooker there before on it's own feed from the fusebox it will be fine. You shouldn't just plug them in though (like how ours was when we got the house), the wires are dangerously skinny for all the current they draw.

I think the rules have changed now, where you have to get professionals to fit stuff and do structural work. Or it can void you house insurance and the terms of your rent and mortgage.

It is the reason electritions have to provide certification for the work now

Some draw more than others, I think. The shower in our last rented place failed and the warranty service engineer refused to commission it; the cabling behind it was only rated for 9kW, not 11.5kW. Said it's a common problem, amateurs buy them as uprated models in B&Q and fit them without thinking they should uprate the mains feed at the same time.

What's the power rating on an electric cooker, anyway? I've never had to deal with one (gas hobs FTW).

Yeah, you shouldn't add sockets and things like that yourself anymore. Not sure what the position is for simply replacing a cooker though.

I can check with my mate who is a sparky..

But I would think you would not be allowed as it is not as simple as plugging in a socket or changing a light, also cookers need a hefty cooker

Fitting an appliance requires an NEIC certified installer, and a cooker must be separately fused. Anything else will void your insurance (and is actually a criminal offence for the installer, if he's not certified).
