My initial thoughts:

  • Tiger Woods 2004 is better than 2003.
  • Burnout 2 is better than Burnout 3.
  • SWOS should be a lot higher.
  • Rockstar Table Tennis should not be on there at all - Top Spin 2 should be instead.
  • Championship Manager 01/02 is better than Football Manager 2008.

More later when I've disseminated further.

I know where Curio got this list, which does change things a little, especially as the justification is missing, but I think I'll keep quiet :)

Fifa 09's strong showing is a bit high for such a recently-released game (personally I might have squeezed Match Day 2 in there for giggles, too) but it's an interesting list. No Mario Tennis is a pity for the plucky little fella.

In fairness, after reading the subtitle to the thread, I think most people know where I got the list...

Makes a bit more sense now. Ultra realism in Virtua Tennis 3, though? Get out.

Also, "perfectly flat 3D" made me smirk.

Hmm.. I've not played the Amiga version of California Games - is it any good? The best version I've played was the gnarly* Master System version.

Actually quite a good list

1. Swos should be higher natch
2. i can understand they took fifa 09, they had to have on, and think this shows the series progress and pes did not, so they took an older one (they should have taken the WE6FE version, but still)
3. Strange they chose the SNES version of NHL94, where usually the megadrive version is revered. There is little doubt that it is the best year of the classic series, currently playing the fan updated 09 version on my iphone (genesis4iphone)
4. T&F yeah!
5. not sure why they took Tiger woods 03 don't know the version, but thought in those years Links was better
6. good to see strange sports (Speedball 2, SMK) there, but no skiing, lots of fun C64 games (see the Stadium 64 site http://s64.emuunlim.com/ )

7. Tennis champs ipv Super Tennis

Also, Franchise Mode was in Madden WELL before 2004. I'd probably have 2002 as the best of the series - that was the year the Texans came into the league, so you were able to replace them with your own, completely-designed-from-scratch franchise, take them through the expansion draft and build from the ground up starting only with cast-offs and has-beens. Plus Deuce McAllister. God bless Deuce McAllister.

That whole magazine makes me cross - Observer Sports Monthly got there first with the "let's rip off Total Sport which is sadly missed", this one takes the few ideas that make for good monthly features, adds the odd standard sport story (ooh, the rise of a footballer, how original) and... oh, it's just shit, isn't it?

Since when is Mario Kart a fucking sport? And it's taken a lot to not say more than that about it.

Also, NHL 94 on the SNES? When the Sega CD version had over 70 tracks of CD Audio organ music?

They can fuck off.

Racing is a sport. Unless you're suggesting it has to be a hyper realistic sim to be a sport game in which case SWOS certainly isn't because there's no fucking way I can control the flight of a ball in the air in reality.

If Mario Kart is a sports game, so are The Club, Midtown Madness and Street Fighter 2.

The Club is a third-person shooter that puts emphasis on scoring points with stylistic kills, very similar in practice to the "Kudos" system in PGR (as it's developed by the same people).

I'd say that it could be considered a sport if Mario Kart is considered one.

Playing Devil's Avocado, though, "kart racing" is an actual real-life sport, whereas "running around shooting people in the quickest possible time" isn't.

Indeed, that's where I'm confused about the club. Mario Kart's basic rules "Get to finish line first", is the same as all racing. Stret Fighter has the same basic premise as UFC, namely disable the guy by any means open to you. No shooting has the rules just described for the club.

Of course, Speedball 2 gets excluded on pretty much this basis too, while it simulates a sport, that sport doesn't actually exist yet.

If you can include Mario Kart, despite the fact in real kart racing you don't go throwing mushrooms and turtle shells at your opponents, you should be able to include the Club as a perversion of paintball.

Can we not just DQ The Club as it's not good enough to get in the list?

Also, American governments often think war is sport. Can we add CoD4?
