Hmm. It appears that

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Marty has died. I didn't notice this happening, and the game didn't tell me - I was just looking at my list of buddies, and noticed he was crossed off. He was 'mercy killed', apparently. Is this supposed to happen? Did I kill him by accident? Does this fuck anything up?

You can lose em all but one and it doesn't make a blind bit of difference.

Right. Is there any point in doing the missions for your mates? Not the alternative methods for the main missions, but the other side missions - like the french woman sending you after the drug dealers. It doesn't seem to get you anything.

It doesn't seem to do anything, which is dumb. Well, I suppose you get to kill more people and blow shit up, but the 'Main Quest' is long enough that you needn't bother.

And yes, Mercy Kill can mean you got 'em by accident. Marty was my buddy but got injured and I grenaded a few people near him, which killed him too. DOH!

I keep wanting to pick this up and play it, then i remember I've got 4 bullets left in my assault Rifle, and a clip in the pistol and half the fucking map to traverse to get to the safe house, and then I don't want to anymore.

check the map
there are points near the four corners of the map and the middle.
it makes the game more bearable rather than battling thru checkpoints when you arent really prepared to do so

They do indeed. And there is a safe house near each bus stop, which is nice.

I am much happier now I have the crates, because it means I can replace my bost weapons by just going to the safe house, rather than trekking to the dealer.

Also, doing Mike's bar side missions gets your reputation up (what does that do?) and doing one of them gets you an achievement, at least.

When I move to the southern part of the map, can I return to the northern half? There are loads of achievements for unlocking all the safe houses and shit that I can't be bothered to do yet - am I screwed if I move on?

Ah yes, I remember now. Upping your rep increases the goodies you get at your safe houses.

You start off with just a house, but then as rep increases you'll have an ammo stockpile, grenade stockpile and molotov stockpile. You also get upgraded jeeps.

I think you can return to the North, but am not sure as I never tried it.

Not convinced. The goodies at the safe house seem to increase each time you subvert a main mission, but not any time your rep increases from doing a side mission.

Which I think means I've missed out on the achievement for doing all the hitman missions. Arse.

Nail on the head. I do some hobbyist coding and I know that it would be almost impossible to make those gun jams random. In the same way that it's nigh on impossible to make truly totally random fruit machines. So, the gun jamming in this game is almost certainly of the pre determined variety and I spotted it almost immediately.

Impossible to make random? Err... right.

For a start, I doubt many, if any games developers use the standard random number generator. It'd make consistent behaviour for debugging pretty much impossible. I certainly use different code for quick & flexible random number generation. Yes, if you know the seed, the generation method and which instance you're using, and can do extraordinarily quick calculations you can know the next number in the sequence but to all intents and purposes, you wouldn't know what it's going to do.

But yes, I get the feelng in Far Cry 2 the degradation is entirely predictable, with no random numbers used at all, expecting maybe the start health, but I struggle to see why that's a bad thing. The interface to tell you how good your gun is, however, is crap. Perhaps having them sound less than well as a warning would've been handy, given that designers have decided to use HUDs as little as possible.

That doesn't stop it being a pain having to visit a weapons shop every second mission, or potentially having even less fun at the end where no shop is available. (Although I did manage to stealth through pretty the entire section without firing, so no problems there)

So, I started playing this tonight. When it wasn't annoyingly tutorialising and refusing to go away until I did what it said, it was having teeny, tiny green on green on 1 inch by 1 inch maps help me not at all, and random people shooting at me for the heinous crime of existing. I do a few meh tutorial missions (to be fair, I screwed up the second one by getting spotted almost immediately), and then it directs me to an arms dealer and hints at a malaria cure.

So, I traipse clumsily about the map for fifteen minutes, trying to work out if I should even bother using the map at all, have my car blown up, restart, traipse around again, then when I reach my objective, get told to come back later. So it's not only wasting my time with tutorialising, but it won't even let me go through the tutorial until it feels like it. Then I look around for something to do, and see a flashing icon that looks like a disk. I guess it wants me to go and save. So I go, get shot at again, kill some fools (who take an awful lot of killing. And the pistol seems bizarrely inconsistent - I can get a headshot in a couple of shots at range, but have seen a shot veer three inches left and hit a tree trunk a foot in front of me while motionless), and then save. And the icon is still flashing. And the arms dealer still isn't in. And I've still got malaria. And the people I accidentally killed (I've twice had a brilliant moment where I've ploughed into a village at high speed, then stopped dead, realised I've made a wrong turn and am surrounded by enemies who are staring straight at me. For the briefest of moments, nobody moves. Then everyone goes "AAARGH!" all at once) respawned about 3 minutes after I killed them.

This is pissing me off already. What the fuck am I supposed to do now? Also, it's all well and good telling me that dodgy guns look dodgy and are rusty, but quite aside from the fact that all guns glow and look like they're made of gold, if I don't know what a nice gun looks like how am I supposed to know the fucking difference?

Not happy.

I started this again tonight after completing the main quest in Fallout 3, and I'm fucking bored by it, and its horrid controls.

I gave up and watched 300 instead.

You have to buy something from the arms dealer's computer before you can get into the bar and get your anti-malarial pills.

Yeah, I know. Stupid fucking game.

But I don't WANT anything. What? I'm supposed to give up half of my precious diamonds for some crap I don't even want b... gah.

I'm sensing a return to shop situation this weekend. Christ, that'll teach me for paying more than £15 for a game for the first time in about two years. This is why I'm stubborn, people! Whenever I cave, shit goes down.

Thanks, though.

Nope, I thought it was good, I didn't finish it but I played it for longer than most games take to finish. I also don't give a toss about achievements so I didn't have to visit every square inch of the map. Therefore the travelling never particularly grated, between the buses, boats, cars, the lovely scenery and the checkpoint gun fights I enjoyed getting around.

Did the constant checkpoint gunfights not annoy the hell out of you after a while? Especially with their "identical to yours, but faster when they're driving them" land rovers?

Not really, I'd always either snipe them or just bust through and leap into the gunners seat of my truck and usually take them all out before they did me much damage. I'm not saying it's a perfect game or anything but there was a lot about it that I enjoyed.

I found that I could drive through most checkpoints, especially at night. Just floor it, avoiding crashing, and by the time they're in their strangely speedy car, I'm long gone. The game doesn't actually let them follow you very far, so unless you're taking serious damage it's normally safe to keep on bombing forwards.

Plus, your cars can all go off-road.

I rarely had to actually fight through a checkpoint more than, say, once per mission.

This is growing on me now. It's still not brilliant, and I'm still thinking it cost too much and suspect I'll get bored of it before I'm halfway through, but it has its moments. Some horrible design decisions, and a faint feeling that, like GTA4, it could be the most incredible thing ever if they just released the game world and let people set any kind of game they wanted there at all. But some good laughs to be had, and a mental French woman who follows you around until you get hurt, then beats the living shit out of anyone who gets in the way as she rescues you.

Nah, you're thinking of the main mate, who gives you alternative ways of doing missions that make no difference at all, but then he goes and gets himself shot. It's the second best mate who helps you out, then mysteriously disappears.

I was going to ask, actually - what effect do the different mercenaries bring to the game? If you favour one or two, does it make a great difference? Do they interact with each other much, even if only conversationally? Are yo ualways limited to three at once?

I've got a mentalist septic who comes and rescues me, which is quite funny.

"Check you ammo, enemies are in play"

I got the dart gun yesterday, but I prefer my sniper rifle/flamethrower combo.

The best thing about the dart gun is that it's a 'special' weapon, not a primary - meaning you can carry an assault rifle, the dart gun, and an M-79 for winning in all situations.

Why is the rotary grenade launcher a primary, but the m-79 is a heavy weapon?

Dunno. The game's a bit weird about what goes in what slot. What's especially annoying is that there's no way of telling which slot a weapon will use until you buy it.

The M-79 doesn't use a 'heavy' slot - it uses your pistol slot.

I'd never leave the house without my flamethrower.

It's a weird old thing, Far Cry 2. The game itself is wonderful, but the lack of fast travel options and, especially, the stupidly restrictive save system really try to break it.

Had a bloody brilliant rampage just now. Really excellent back to the wall stuff across half the map, simply by chance - I followed a rough direction by road, grass and river, and got into loads of brilliant scrapes (I could have avoided some of them, but I wanted to assault some).

It has its moments. It's just a pity that it has so many glaring mistakes, and a lot of missed opportunities.

Also, having the remote mines (which are second only to Crackdown's for barricade-busting bomb truck leaps of fiery carnage) replace your pistol instead of your heavy weapon: Um, what?

I never use the remote mines. I get my car exploding kicks from the mini grenade launcher thingy.

Once I'd unlocked all the weapons, I only ever used the M16 (or whatever it was called... the best assault rifle), the dart rifle and the launcher thingummy.

Mmmm.

Curio, you should write a second opinion on Dimrill's review.

I will, but not today, as I am being a chef.
