Yep, especially as it counts as a special weapon, whereas snipers count as a primary.

and then a mad dash back, escaping into the jungle with only 4 bullets for my Assault Rifle.

So now, I need to

And I found a single seater racing car.

I still hate this a little bit. It has many annoyances but it's getting better. Like, why does EVERYONE want to kill me now? And weapon jamming? Fuck off. Running makes your vision blurry. Enemies take ages to die but seem to be able to kill me in a couple of shots. etc.

Right - someone said something about the controls in this easrlier but I can't be arsed to read 15 pages to find it. They feel really sticky and slow when you start to move, then go stupidly fast "whizz!" once you get past a certain amount of turning. It feels really weird, and is bugging the hell out of me. Do I need to fiddle with the controller sensitivity some more?

Yes, this is what you do:

  • Insert Gears of War 2 disc into 360

Hope this helps.

I just whacked sensitivity up to full. Took a little while to get used to it, and the sniper rifles don't track quickly enough, but you'll get used to it.

Myp - go soak your head.

Curio - I'll give that a go, thanks. I had assumed it would be too super whizzy, but as I've tried every setting to the left of middle, I'll try the more sensitive ones next, and see if that resolves the "stickiness" at the beginning of turns.

Right - I quite like this game.

I think the weapons jamming thing is brilliant - the visual cues with the rusty weapons adds a bit of realism. It's quite cool finding a new weapon from a corpse, but knowing that it may cack up any time. It's a good way of introducing new weapons slowly. Sort of a teaser trailer.

There's a nice variety of vehicles, so far. Landrovers, Jeep SUVs, big boats, small boats, cars, dune buggy type things...

It's beautiful, as well, in a dusty sort of way.

What is pissing me off is the long bloody distances you have to travel (either directly, or by travelling to a bus stop, taking the bus, then going form the buss stop to the destination), and how when you have the map out half of it is below the bottom of the screen so you have to keep looking down into your lap while you're driving. It's realistic, sure but there are times when realism can be an impediment to enjoyment. An overlaid map might have been better.

However, solid game so far. 8/10.

Give it time. You'll soon realise it happens at the worst possible times and feels awfully 'convinient' and then it'll start to slowly piss you off.

Oh, it's done that a fair few times. It'd be pointless if they jammed when it was "convenient". That'd just be "me cleaning my gun in my house".

Of course, a good way to stop guns jamming is preventative maintenance, which the game doesn't let you do.

And given that there's no randomness to it, I've loaded up a saved game before knowing 100% that my gun was going to jam on the next shot, and not being able to do a damned thing about it.

Indeed so it all felt a bit scripted to me. As I say, it was fun for a while but then when it happens after you've just spent 20 mins chasing a jeep around in your clapped out car and then have to start up that chase again it grates, big time.

Far Cry 2 to me was a bit crap. A totally missed opportunity and felt rather flimsy underneath it all. The only comparison (sic) I can draw is Turok 3. Turok 3 felt like it could have been a fantastic game and shared some really great ideas with Half Life, but sadly it wasn't done well at all and thus felt 'light'.

Hard to explain really..

I thought the jamming was one of the game's greatest strengths, and made the fighting a bit more unpredictable. Your gun generally won't jame on your first mission... but dare you risk a second without visiting the gun shop again?

What I meant was if the jamming was more random and didn't feel like it was coded to do it at the worst possible times I wouldn't mind so much.

But it isn't. It only happens when you're doing something of importance and the game is too big for it to remain fun for long. Chasing around a truck trying to stop it was an idea done to death by Chase HQ many years ago. It was fun then. It isn't now. Infact, 'flimsy and light' weren't the best ways to describe it. The game engine is basically old and stale and has been done to death too many times.

The graphics, though, are incredible. I also liked the Malaria twist.

Right. So that's another 30 mins of driving and buggering about stopping you from progress.

Also, how many times has an enemy had his gun jam? I've seen it like, none times. So there we go. If it was balanced properly it would work very well (like all of the other gameplay elements, then.)

Hmm, maybe. There's definitely something a bit off, and the "story" as such is nearly non-existent so far. The shootings are pretty good, though. I quite liked it when I crashed my jeep in the middle of nowhere, overturning it, and ended up fighting a load of people to get a new one, and running out of ammo half way through - I then had to grab guns off the corpses as I went along. The scarcity of resources makes it less of a "wade in with TEH GUNS" game, and forces you to think about your shots.

The trucks always follow a circular route though. I always just go for waiting on the route and whanging a grenade at the fucker, rather than chasing it.

Don't get me wrong Chris, I'm not being needlessly spiteful.. I loved this game for about a week. I loved the graphics, LOVED the location (god it's utterly beautiful. In the thunderstorms you can almost smell the ozone and feel the wind blowing down your back) and loved the ideas. There are some really amazing ideas in this game..

But it's not coded well enough to make a good game.. It's kinda like the old Mario Kart 64 "always up your arse" problem. REALLY hair rippingly annoying.. Annoying enough for me to not load it again..

Now I'm not going to say that FO3 doesn't have faults of it's own. It does, and fucking annoying they are too (like the olde "Why can enemies hit ME through walls and from a country mile away but my bullets fly hopelessly wide?) but even that flaw is sortable by walking toward the target diagonally, watching them miss 80% of their shots and then using the combat shotty and bloody mess perk to take them out.

Yeah I sussed that in the end and just stuck a mine or ghetto rigged RPG on the road and sat back and watched the fireworks.. But there's not enough change in the game and it all gets very samey and repetitive.

I don't think it jams at inopportune moments on purpose. Just that you fire your guns a lot more when you're being attacked, so it always feels like it's a bad time.

It did get a little tedious towards the end, so I stopped doing non-story missions. It is worth sticking around to finish it though, if you can, as some of the final few missions are fantastic fun.

I refute that. The end section in

The Heart of Darkness
was a fucking nightmare of gun killing bastard game mechanics. It obviously ramped up the time when your gun goes new-knacked there. I went in with brand new bang bangs, and it was only because I'd stashed new versions of my guns in the safehouses that I got through to the end of the section. And even then the new new ones were jamming regularly again. It's a false difficulty curve that I wish to beat them to death over.

Nail on the head. I do some hobbyist coding and I know that it would be almost impossible to make those gun jams random. In the same way that it's nigh on impossible to make truly totally random fruit machines. So, the gun jamming in this game is almost certainly of the pre determined variety and I spotted it almost immediately.

In Fallout 3 yes, the gun problems are pre determined but in a transparent simple way , IE - your guns wear progressively and evenly, which works very well (clever use of simple coding really).

What they have tried to do in FC2 just simply doesn't work. And that is quite apt to 99% of the game. And let's be completely honest 'cards on the table' here, it didn't work in Far Cry either.

The AI in near on every single Need for Speed game EVER is terrible also, for the same reasons listed above. How do you tell a game that a bugatti Veyron is twice as fast as a Ford Crown Victoria (yank cop car)? Without SERIOUS coding and 'statting' you can't. And that's why the cop chases in every recent NFS are utterly shat.

If we were really any good at creating AI we would have robotic butlers (see what I did there? lmao) but we're not. And thus they shouldn't try and be too clever with game mechanics and keep the gameplay nice and simple.

Indeed. What sucks the most is it can leave you in the middle of a full blown battefield with enemies whose guns NEVER jam with nothing.

At which point you have to run away and get shot in the back, praying you'll survive. Then you need to find a car, but you can't kill the cunt in it 'cos 'uh oh' you don't have no gun. And even if you manage to do so you then have to drive for fucking miles to find a med place and then through three totally stupid and annoying fucking checkpoints and kill more NED cunts before you can possibly hope to resume.

Sorry, but all of those annoying elements detract from the game. WAAAAY too much stopping and starting and finicky fucking around for my liking. FO3 is a RPG and thus is extremely anal with it's statting system but doesn't drive you insane with petty stupid annoying ideas.

Don't be daft. If you want to link it to 'realism' or something silly like that then you could say that since you're in a swamp it's more humid and your metal guns corrode faster. Really though, it's just making it more difficult by making you pick your shots. I don't understand how it could be cheating.

You do realise you get three guns, right? Don't go charging in on dozens of enemies with three knackered guns.

FO3 messes up your stats if you take any of the medicines and instantly get addicted, so you have to go cure yourself all the damn time. The enemies have infinite ammo until you kill them, at which point they suddenly have very little. Games have these little quirks. You've just got to roll with the punches...

It's not daft. When the mechanics of the frigging thing become so blatant, you might as well show the hamster running in the wheel who's powering the entire thing. A real difficulty curve would introduce elite fighters or something, who are much more accurate, have armour maybe. More enemies even. Making your gun jam after 4 shots? Sorry, that's an executable offence.

Oh, you know that entire furore over the DRM in Spore? It's just a quirk of the game. Get used to it.

If a "quirk" has pissed me off to the point of howling in spittle flecked rage at the screen, then to me it's game breaking.
