It's a testament to versatile and accomplished an actor John Hurt was that his role as the Doctor was barely mentioned in obituaries.

Hmmm.... is there any currently active actresses of the 'right' age (mid 30's to mid 40's say) with decent comedy chops, the right physicality and suitable gravitas for the dramatic parts? Any suggestions?

Anyone saying Suranne Jones gets a slap.

Not while they have a mixed race/black companion. Can't see it happening.

It would be a nice surprise though.

I agree, but here's the problem: Almost all the best candidates have already guest starred in Doctor Who.

Didn't harm Capaldi's chances though, I suppose

They could work in a reason as to why he chose her face, I suppose.

I think I prefer it when they're relatively unknown. Although Capaldi has been brilliant.

'Smile'. I dreaded this one from the trailers as it struck me as the kind of 'let's reference contemporary society in a way that will date it quickly'. It grew on me, and I enjoyed the unfolding of the mystery although the resolution could have been better handled. It did strike me as being in part a homage to the classic series as I think I identified three or more sections that would have been a whole half-hour with cliffhanger had this been in the 1980s.

Not the best episode ever, but then, not the worst. Definitely a solid 73%. Most memorable bit? The robots' 'kill! kill! kill!' face.

Really enjoying Bill as companion, and her relationship with Capaldi. He seems revitalised now he's freed up from being overshadowed in every episode (story-wise) by Clara, and it's nice that they're doing simple, fun stories where everything isn't about how someone is the Chosen One and Most Important.

Her character has a sense of wonder about the possibilities of the Tardis and the Doc that I've not felt a character's had since Rose a very long time ago which is vey infectious. Also, loved the exchange about the Doc's accent.
