I liked it and it wasn't exactly a massive commitment at six episodes

Having just watched the chronological fan-edit of the Infinity Saga nothing feels like a massive commitment.

Six episodes is too many when the Wife Acceptance Factor is already very low after one episode

That's weird. It seems to be getting terrible reviews from the Marvel fanboy community. I wonder why that could possibly be...

Gotta say, I was quite enjoying Stranger Things Part 1. Quite gory, nice bit of horror, alright CG, not too much of the usual cast doing the same things, interesting new characters, some really nice direction etc.

Until the last episode… when the twist was so sloooowly revealed after the audience had surely got it 10 minutes earlier. And then I thought back on the lot and remembered, ‘what the fuck was that Hopper stuff really about other than a really long wacky side quest?’ A side quest which really doesn’t intersect with the main story at all (well, until the second part maybe).

And actually bar the initial above ground stuff, the El/11 side story was equally drawn out.

And then I’m thinking, apart from all the 11 stuff, what’s the point of Mike and Will’s wacky side quest other than a really elongated wacky side quest?

Will all of these disparate pieces be drawn together in the second part, well probably I guess, but taken as a whole my reflections on part 1 were that most of the stuff was so separate that I might as well have been watching 3 or 4 different shows based on Stranger Things.

That’s not to say that it wasn't entertaining, because it was, and probably better than seasons 2 & 3, but I’m wondering whether a two part series was actually needed to tell this story and that it wouldn’t have benefited from being shorter.

I suppose we’ll find out when part 2 gets released.

Finished the second series of Hacks over the weekend, excellent stuff, probably better than the first series.

Also watched the final episode of the third series of Barry this morning...again brilliant and so, so dark.

I was on edge watching Barry the entire time. What a show and what a great season.

The whole “What did you put in my fucking eye” had me up in my seat.

The fact that Bill Hader has been directing some/most of these episodes is insane. The guy has got some real talent and has surrounded himself with some great people in front and behind the camera.

Especially when you see him interviewed about how he basically fell arse backwards into SNL as the 'impressions guy'. He is something of a marvel.

Hellbound (Netflix): entertaining enough Korean series in which people get a visit and told when they will be taken to hell. At the appointed time, monsters show up,etc. It prods a fair bit at the notices behind power and religion, and worth a watch.

The Orville is back for Season 3, and if it wasn't for Strange New Worlds, I'd say it's the best Star Trek in decades.
That might be selling it short actually, as it's evolved into it's own show. Last week's episode "A tale of two Top's" was a superbly written and acted story about gender identity and rights

I’d be willing to forgive this idiotic inconsistency if there wasn’t a whole tedious side quest to make a sensory deprivation tank with the “rad dudes.” If she just needed a bath, have her sit in a fucking bath and stop padding the run time.

Conclusion: I didn’t hate it but the shine had worn off by the end. I much preferred the earlier episodes in this season by a long, long way. It felt drawn out by the end, although I must say I kinda did enjoy the big long ending.

What I didn’t enjoy was the fractured cast which had 3-4 entirely distinct plots running concurrently and although they were tied together (sort of, aye Hopper?) it felt like watching 3 shows banged together.

The Boys Season Three was fucking great.

Post subject:  Re: General Purpose US TV thread

It was, wasn't it? It started out a little bit too "shocky" for me, but that tailed off by episode 3 or so and then it just rattled along brilliantly. The finale was a little bit of a let down, but only because eps 6 and 7 were just fucking brilliant.

I've also been watching my way through all 3 series of Daredevil over the last month or two. That was a lot better than I expected it to be, and there were some moments in S3 that actually brought me to tears, like the big twat that I am.

I thought the series was brilliant, but was completely meh about Herogasm. They totally overhyped is as a mind-blowing shockathon and it was just meh.

Post subject:  Re: General Purpose US TV thread

That was what I quite liked about it, tbh. I haven't read any of the comics, but I knew from reading places like the SA forums that Herogasm in the comics was a lot more... involved. I quite liked the bait-and-switch.

Stranger Things 4 was too long and had too much shit going on at once. Also dead people should stay dead.

I'm not saying it was bad (although I think maybe I would describe large chunks of the last two episodes as such), but compared to the fucking glory that was Season 1 it's nowhere near the same league.

I thought it was worse than the first season but much better than season 3 which was pretty rubbish and almost put us off it entirely.

Post subject:  Re: General Purpose US TV thread

I agree with all of this. It was far too long, too baggy, too self indulgent and far too reliant on what appeared to be no budget restraints, rather than imagination.
Like you said, it isn’t bad, but the fact that if it weren’t for the glory of Season 1, and the hope they were going to do something interesting with it, I would have given up on this before completing it. I mean, Vecna. C’mon. By having him as the central villain, and explaining how he came about, they effectively neutered all the jeopardy from the Upside Down. That, allied to the other plot strands made the Upside Down tertiary in this, so god only knows where they’re going to go with it next time around.

I am working my way through TV as I am off work resting.

The Orville - season 3 - this is becoming one of my sci-fi showed. It does Trek better than Trek. The comedy and drama is spot on.
Picard - season 2 - it is ok.. still feels very fan fiction.
The Boys - season 3 - I just love Butcher. The is one of my fav charters in anything.

The Bear. Economical, masterful storytelling. I can't remember what last gripped me such that what seem small plot points are referred back to and I remembered them all.

See also: Chefs are dicks. Must they be? I mean, really? Why hair like that? How could the place ever make money? Why so many people (see previous point)?

But it's absolutely brilliant - mixture of tense, funny, agonising and emotional.

Episode 7 gave me flashbacks to working in a kitchen, it's also done in one single shot and it's amazing, really sets the stress levels high.
