Ooh, I dunno. Risky move employing a tall, muscular man to play a character described as... tall and muscular.

Was Tom Cruise not available?

I definitely care, but am disappointed because I thought they were FURTHER ALONG GODDAMMIT than this.

If you haven't, get yourself a dose of good-old early 2000s sexism by watching Blue Mountain State, which is basically American Pie: The TV Show.

Has anyone been watching Schitt'$ Creek? We're into the last series now and it's an absolute joy.

It took me the best part of the first season to take to the characters, but found I warmed to them quickly soon after. It's an exquisite balance of pretty abrasive humour and boundless warmth. Eugene Levy is endlessly loveable, and Catherine Keen plays her hair off as a brilliant monster Moira.

Highly recommend.

We tried watching it last week but after two episodes I just couldn't bear any more of it. All the set up was there with the situation and characters but it forgot to actually be funny.

Fair enough. It is worth persevering with in my opinion, kicking off in S2 prob wouldn't do any harm. Though it sounds like I may have found it a touch funnier from the off than you did.

It was co-created by him and the actors who plays the father; who is his actual father IRL.

I gave it a go but I struggled. Both the kids I found entertaining but the parents just don't make me laugh. I don't think I've ever found Eugene Levy funny, which doesn't help.

I found in later series they whittled away at the extraneous characters and made it more of a focus on the family, Stevie and the community as a foil and backdrop. Fair to say several more layers are found in the likes of Stevie and the family themselves.

I have enjoyed reading the reviews for it. Suffice to say, they are mostly of the “This is arguably the worst show ever to be commissioned” variety.

Finally got around to watching the final season of The Americans over the last week or two. So glad we did, what a send off. I think we'd got a bit bored of it at one point but such a good final season and the last episode in particular was amazing.

So Season 2 of THE BOYS was really disappointing, me and Mrs Hearthly both pegged it at around a 7/10. (I'd drop it down to a 6.5/10 myself.)

When it was firing on all cylinders it was still great, but by crikey the words 'patchy' and 'uneven' spring to mind.

Quite the shame after the magnificence of Season 1.

I've not finished it, but so far I agree completely - I admire the way they've taken the characters from the comics and done something different, but it is all over the place.

If you think that’s bad, have a look at the trailer for The Watch. It bears no resemblance to Discworld.

Yeah I can’t wait for each new episode. Fave thing on TV at the moment. I never read the comics so I’ve nothing to compare against.

Author:  Hearthly [ Sat Oct 10, 2020 9:30 ]
Post subject:  Re: General Purpose US TV thread

I've never read the comics either, the problems with Season 2 have nothing to do with whether or not they're following the comics.

Off the top of my head:

Entirely redundant subplots that literally go nowhere and completely break the pacing.

Far too much focus on characters we're given no real reason to be invested in.

Forced conflict in key relationships to generate artificial tension for 'reasons'.

Not enough screen time for the strongest characters and stories.

They fucked the soundtrack. Billy Joel, that's what everyone wants to hear. All the time.

A key character from Season 1 isn't in Season 2, and it seriously hurts the entirety of Season 2.

Gratingly blatant political agenda that feels shoe-horned in and narrative cohesion be damned.

Stuff that worked well in Season 1 feels like a re-tread in Season 2 (profanity, shocking violence etc).

Absolutely feels like what it is, a mish-mash of writers and directors all doing their own thing.

I could go on.

Very, very disappointing after the absolute brilliance of Season 1.

Ha! I liked his - he stuck with "British" more this time, I think, though in (I think) episode 6 he suddenly veers off into a broad antipodean shaaaark. But the american who played his aunt was proper "I am an American doing a Bri-ish accent, I am, cor blimey guvnor".

I even looked her up after the episode and still got it wrong. Must have got distracted by all the DC stuff (she's Barbara Gordon) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Gordon.
