That was the reason I never took to 'Scrubs'.

Ah, Scrubs was great! We were talking about it last night, actually. Has my favourite ever joke in it, which is kind of hard to write, but:

‘Mr Rogers, it’s pronounced ænalgesic... you put them in your mouth’.

It's not brilliant or anything; the actual plots are generally very derivative of Star Trek and other sci-fi shows (one of the episodes rips off the Black Mirror episode Nosedive for instance) but there's something about the characters I like. For all the abuse A Million Ways to Die in the West got I found the central relationship very convincing and they pull off a similar trick here, while still essentially just being Star Trek with dick jokes.

Post subject:  Re: General Purpose US TV thread

Yep, it's totally Star Trek TNG with dick jokes. If you removed the more out of place humour, you could transplant the crew of the 1701D into pretty much every episode and it would be a perfect fit.

The courtroom scene where they were deciding the fate of Bortus' daughter could have easily had Riker arguing the case.

Thankfully The Big Bang Theory continues it’s plunge into shitness. Whew.

The Punisher is really good innit.

Your man Shane holds the screen splendidly (he was arguably one of the strongest characters in TWD), and the rest of the cast are fine too.

The violence is satisfyingly crunchy and squishy, and the action sequences are exciting, although I've noticed a few continuity errors here and there.

It's still a bit 'filler-esque' sometimes (nothing as bad as Luke Cage though, at least not yet), but overall a very good watch.

Shane is also good in Snitch, which is an okay film if you can get over the fact that The Rock is playing an ordinary dude. He acts it perfectly well, but he's the size of a fucking train.

Yeah it suffers from the same issue of spending too much time with underdeveloped side characters and plots that all the other Marvel/Netflix stuff has, but it's less of a problem than it is here than in the other shows.

I love that article.

Quote:
nobody really knew they wanted three more Fast & Furious sequels until there was a trailer where The Rock breaks a plaster cast off his arm while saying "Daddy's gotta go to work", and then everyone was like "oh HELL YES! GIVE ME ONE HUNDRED MORE OF THOSE FILMS!";

Just watched the most recent episode of The Orville and the character level work continues to impress me in spite of the relatively thin plots. For some reason during this episode it struck me precisely how utterly fucking shameless it's ripping-off of Star Trek TNG is. It's not just a couple of little things, it's almost every single detail: the intro, the theme tune, the uniforms, the food dispenser things, even the noise of the doors. Unless there's some shared ownership of the IP--which doesn't seem likely as one is Fox and the other CBS--then I'm stunned they're getting away with it. I mean the things I mention aren't exactly the same of course but they're so blatantly hewing as close as possible that taken as a whole it's impossible to deny.

They don't have any rights to the ip, but they have producers, writers and vfx staff and maybe others that have worked on Star Trek.

Also Sherry Palmer.

I could be very wrong, but I think pastiche/parody is given generous leeway.

Yeah I think they'd have to go down the parody/spoof angle if they were planning to mount a legal defence. Doubt it would come to that here though, but maybe.
