PR, although important, is not quite as important as a lot of people think! But it's a decent measure of a site's quality according to Google, sure.

I voted for No, but I couldn't really care less if it's unobtrusive.

Do the search engines not check backlinks for relevance? It's all secret, I know, but there are sites out there with the speculation and testing to see what works and what doesn't.

Author:  WTB [ Mon Sep 22, 2008 16:02 ]
Post subject:  Re: Advertising?

Yeah relevance is an important factor, but the search engines don't completely discard an irrelevant link, it's just worth a bit less.

But anyway, none of that is important. The question is - would you mind a small text link ad at the bottom of the forum?

That's surprisingly poor. fscked.co.uk has a rank of 3. Who wants to start the pagerank pissing contest thread?

No. It should be Grim...'s call, as this server runs at his benevolence. If he doesn't want the cash he can always put it behind the bar in Shunt of course.

Well I agree it should be his call, and as stated in the OP, he said he'd leave it up to a forum vote, which is why I'm asking you all to vote.

Actually, I think this was a bad idea. Obviously some people are opposed to this and see it as a suspicious scheme of some sort. I'd rather not bother - especially after what happened with WoS. Nevermind chaps, thanks for voting anyway. I just saw it as a way to cover Grim...'s costs as well as another small opportunity for my company.

Well, no it wasn't a bad idea. You asked-obviously Grim wasn't so opposed to it because he didn't say 'no' outright. I'm sure if it was that bad he would have done so. By leaving it up to people on the forum (who use it) then he's ensuring it won't pee people off having it, thusly everyone's happy then. And people aren't overse to it looking at the poll count

Yeah, but I meant as soon as he started locking the place down for subbers only. It kind of has similarities with this. A once free to use and no advertising democracy thing now having advertising = probably a bad idea.

Yes, that was the start of the end. I'd be happy to pay a sub here but not if there's going to be little stars identifying who has subscribed and who hasn't or special areas with restricted access. FUCK ALL THAT.

Christ, there's nothing suspicious about it! I didn't want the thread deleting to hide anything, I just wanted the discussion to end, but I've since been convinced to let the poll run.

edit: but this is why I'm sort of regretting even asking. I'm not sure what sort of suspicious scheme this could possibly contribute to, but I don't like people thinking I'm up to something dodgy. It's a bit of advertising - okay it's not advertising in the traditional sense, but it falls under the umbrella.

Like I say, I'd rather just not bother if people are going to resent me for it.
