I'm trying to avoid spoilers on MDWaP so I've created a new thread for the relevant chat, so we can talk about other podcasts here too.

A friend of mine got a shout out on the latest episode of 'Rex Factor'. That was a nice surprise. I think I will give him a couple of days or do before making an oblique reference to it.

Fans of the End Times might want to listen to Radio 3's recent 'Sunday Feature' on the Apocalypse. It's a look at views on the last days from different cultures, traditions, and time periods from the Romans to the present day Zombigeddon.

Afterwards, if you want more of the devil, Tom Service's 'Listening Service' on what makes a virtuoso is good fun, especially his discussion of what makes Van Halen great.

This week's 'Listening Service' on Beethoven's 9th is brilliant and worth listening to if you've ever heard the symphony. Mr Service discusses both the structure of the piece and how it's been used and abused over time.

I remember it took me years before I finally started to understand and enjoy the symphony, rather than spend forty-five minutes waiting for 'Ode to Joy' to start. I hadn't picked up on the farting bassoons however, but since listening to this podcast I might find myself distracted by them when I next hear it.

Just listened to another superb episode of the Listening Service. In a probably unintentional :attitude:-throwback for Beex's 9th birthday week, this one is on short songs. Over 20 pieces are played in full, from across the centuries and genres. I've saved this one to my Ipod so I can listen to them again and try to catch everything that's going on. Well worth half an hour of your time.

As we're posting radio shows, Australian comedian Sarah Kendall has a three part thing up on the iPlayer at the moment that's not only fucking hilarious but also just really well done and touching story telling. I'd never heard much of her before, aside from the odd appearance on The Now Show I think, but this is really good stuff.

One of those was comedy of the week, I think - and excellent, so thanks for letting me know there were more.

I've just added 'two dope girls' to my list. Seems a bit 'you go, girl!' hypey at the start, but there's some good laughs in there.

Listened to the first three of this week's late night essays on the Third just now, entitled 'Hanging on'. It's a cosy, comfortable dose of nostalgia for out-dated things that are still around today (eg boating ponds; ventriloquis; landline telephones). Yes, it's the audio equivalent of an advert for Werther's Originals or Hovis, but charming nonetheless.

S Town! It's from the Serial people and it's fascinating. I'm trying to work out without googling if it's fictional or not. I keep getting an 'acting' vibe from some of the delivery.

It didn't seem fictional to me. And I enjoyed it - hard to say much more without spoiling bits, I don't think, but by the end I was sad not to know John.

I enjoyed S Town enormously and can easily understand people's incredulity over its veracity. Everything about it felt unlikely, non-moreso than the fact that something like this could have fallen into this journalist's lap. And what an endearing journalist he was. Reminded me of a less dispassionate Louis Theroux.

A drinks event about it? In a sawdust-strewn backroom of a barbershop?

Enjoyed Serial 1, got bored of Serial 2. That's my Pod news, sponsored by phpBB.

I'm addicted to My Favourite Murder. It's two women talking about murders that interest or intrigue them, often with lots of comedy throughout whilst still being respectful and trying to encourage people to fuck politeness in favour of personal safety. It's very likeable, very funny, and they're coming to London at some point later this year so start listening now if you want to be a fan for the live show.

Like Serial did before it, S-Town kind of fizzled out at the end, because not a great deal happened.

But not MDWAP! What a cliffhanger this week!

Audible (spit) has two Alien audio plays - Out of the Shadows (which is based on the book but much better) and River of Pain (which I've not listened to yet, because Audible (spit)).

Out of the Shadows was really good - the lady that played Ripley was spookily close to Weaver's voice.

I think this link will get it for you for free if you've not tried Audible (spit) before: http://a.co/6t8cq4I

Otherwise it's £21. £21!

Athletico Mince.

I had a crack at it a while ago and didn't really get on with it.

They sounded a little depressed ("they" being Bob Mortimer and the bloke who does Get in the Sea.)

However, I've skipped to the latest pod and am now listening to them in reverse order, as they seem to have really hit their stride. I'll keep going until I get to where they hadn't found their stride and stop there.

It's rarely related to football and is more of a platform for Bob to go off on one.

This episode had me shaking uncontrollably :hat: on the train this morning.

I started listening to it and in episode 1 Bob says "I would start with episode 8 if I were you"

I tried it, didn't really like it but I do like Bob Mortimer so I may go back to it.

As most radio shows are available in podcast form now, I've never seen any harm in mentioning them here. I think the BBC is cleverly slowly shifting its audience to them in preparation for a wirelessless future in 20 years or so (although I really can't imagine life without it). Things like the original 'Listen Again' helped open up the daytime Radio 4 schedule and most of the Third for me, and podcasting has widened my listening even more.

Timeshifting is the reality that broadcasters have to face. I reckon the BBC is currently well ahead of the game. The iPlayer basically defined the standard.

As a kid, I used to set up the alarm on my radio cassette recorder so I could tape certain shows. I would also waste hours DX'ing on the shortwave my parents gave me one Christmas. And then found the frequency of the analogue portable telephone we had.

Radio 3: Seven Ages of Memory

Using Shakespeare's famous 'seven ages of man' speech from his recent hit 'As you like it' to provide a structure, this is a fascinating discussion of how music and the mind work at different stages in our lives.

The announcer on Radio 3 gave an offensive language warning before this lunchtime's 'Private Passions'. That was a little unexpected and I did wonder whether it was going to be an s-, an f-, or a c-f-m. Good interview today nonetheless.

The Kano track they played was surprisingly moving, especially given the context for its inclusion, and not something I'd usually listen to.
