The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Hexagonal Phase

Finally listened to this, but feelings are mixed. It had its moments, and I really enjoyed some of the jokes and cameos (especially the voice of the Guide Mark II), but ultimately felt it was lacking the freshness and charm of the original. It's more like rather good fan fiction. Glad to have it and to be with the characters again, but yet still feeling it's almost, but not entirely, unlike the ones written by Douglas Adams himself.

Yes, I felt similarly. After just the first episode, that was on comedy of the week. Bits of it were fine, bits of it sort of in the style of but missing the mark.

I've probably given more thought on who to vote for in the 'Rex Factor' semis and grand final than any other major decision so far this year. Of course, the winner has to be:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
James IV.

I found Mary, Queen of Scots, a really fascinating person and someone I'd like to learn more about, given that I'd only really known her as someone who pops up during Liz the First's reign to have a head cut off. But sadly she doesn't really achieve anything as Queen and when we're playing in the higher leagues you need to have something substantial.

Robert the Bruce is clearly the most memorable - very much as recognisable as Henry VIII. And this works against him for this competition because we should be celebrating the lesser known. Being awesome with a sword, usurping the throne, and guaranteeing Scotland's independence are all good things, but would I want to live under him?

Constantine deserves recognition by being able to retire and die a natural death: an outstanding achievement for a Scottish ruler. He did create the modern Scotland and survive Banockburn so these are in his favour.

But James IV! What a guy! Golden age, a navy, the judgements the dentistry, all adds up to an excellent ruler. And all destroyed in one great epic charge.

I think Mary is a fascinating "what might have been". A few people dying in a different order, and she could have ended up with a son inheriting the thrones of France, England and Scotland.

Anyone else on to 'This sounds serious'? True crime, but comical, too. Wasn't sure about episode 1 - too much cheese - but by episode 3, and the names, and the cult...

Great stuff.
You've written the angry tweet to Ali about one particular pacifically-minded king not getting the Rex Factor right?

I have listened to my first 'Podcast' in the last couple of days. A podcast is like the radio used to be except it's as if you've recorded the radio onto a C-90 cassette tape and then listen to the radio at a time of your choosing, and instead of a tape you can listen to the radio show using wireless Bluetooth technology in your car and it plays the show through your cars speakers and it is magic and it shows the name of what you are listening to on your car's infotainment screen.

The first podcast I listened to is Adam Buxton and he was chatting to Charlie Brooker. Trousers recommended it to me and nagged me to purchase 'Pocket Casts' for my phone at a cost of £2.99.

When I listened to it, I felt as if they were in the car with me and I was listening to their conversation. It was friendly and pleasant and I liked it, it is a fine accompaniment for the drive to and from work.

I will listen to more podcasts in future because I think they are good.

Brilliant!

Sadly, that was the best one, and it is all downhill from here. However, ignore that - to the downloadatron.

Excellent! Wonder what slot he'll get?

Although can't get LBC in the car, alas, unless the atmosphere is doing weird things.

Huh, it even does Sirius.

Do you need Android Auto in the mix, though?

Radio 3's 'Listening Service': Truck Driver Modulation .

It has been. I'm up to episode 43, and it's remained superb.

I especially like Grainsley, and any time Cassius gets into a fight.

Can highly recommend Crimetown, the story of the very seedy underbelly of Providence, Rhode Island.

Corruption that runs to the very top, interviews and anecdotes from some of the main players, and a mayor investigated for torture, it's a nuts and far-reaching story.

Radio 4: 'Being Gerry Adams'

A really interesting documentary about the actors who 'were' Gerry Adams during the absurd broadcasting ban of the 1980s/early 1990s.

There's a new series of Sarah Kendall's Australian Trilogy up on the iPlayer. Funny, touching and just brilliant story-telling. Very highly recommended.

I'm sure I'd mentioned it before, but Wondery (the folk that did the excellent Dirty John) have just started a new podcast called Doctor Death.

It's terrifying.

https://wondery.com/shows/dr-death/

(Also, there's a lady in the first episode who sounds just like Tree Trunks).

I like Serial (and S-Town), but I always found they petered out toward the end.

That's the nature of reality, I suppose. With the first season in particular, there was no chance of a shocking climax as you know from the start that Adnan was in prison for murder.

At least with Making a Murderer, there were a few shocking moments along the way. Serial has always felt like a fascinating journey, rather than a destination.

The new series is supposedly different as they've been resident in a courthouse for a few months and following lots of different, everyday cases. Should be interesting.

What is it about podcasts that the only things they ever seem to advertise are recruitment agencies and mattresses?
