In other music news, I picked up Asher Roth's second album recently. If you've heard of him at all it'll be from his one big single 'I Love College', a pretty fucking stupid, but catchy, ode to getting drunk and partying in college that was around in 2009. I started listening to the album that spawned it, Asleep in the Bread Aisle, a while back for some reason and, although bits of it come with the same immaturity that I Love College is drowning in, the guy's got an undeniably brilliant flow and it's very well produced. His style is very similar to Eminem's; there's even an entire brilliantly rapped track on the album that talks about how, while Eminem undeniably paved the way for him, the comparison also holds him back as people assume he's just bandwagon jumping.

Anyway, I Googled him recently and found out he'd put out a second album in 2013 called Retrohash so I picked it up. I wasn't expecting much given his previous album's obsession with getting wasted and the title there (which turns out just to be an anagram of his name) but it's a lot more, well, mature unsurprisingly. Less straight-down-the-line hip-hop with a really relaxed and hazy production style. I haven't listened to it a lot yet so can't pick out any specific moments but I just really enjoyed the sound and style of it; and Roth himself still has a really compelling flow when he gets going.

tl;dr: Asher Roth does some stuff that's very good. It won't blow your mind or anything, and you really need to look past the dumbness of some of the themes on the first album to enjoy it, but he's got a great flow and makes some nice tunes.

Listening to a new Parquet Courts album this morning. I'm pretty slow about deciding whether or not I like new material from bands I love but it sounds alright so far.

If anyone hasn't heard them they should get hold of Light Up Gold and have a listen because it's really, really good definitely one of my favourite records of the last couple of years.

Also there's a new Phantom Band album out that I haven't heard yet so that's something to look forward to.

Yes, I bought it. It's pretty good from the two listens I gave it, but I need to give it some more airtime.

Oh, cool; I'm glad you liked it. It can be a teeny bit incoherent at times just because each track throws so much into the blender, but I really like that about it and just let the madness of it all wash over me. The last tune I was listening to as I came to work went from relaxed bleepiness to chiptune to thrash metal (with a soupcon of drum and bass) to prog techno within five minutes; which is awesome obviously.

Found out there's a new Passenger album out soon. I hadn't heard of him until I got 'All the little lights' for Christmas, since when that album has been a regular play on my Ipod. Must get some of his back catalouge at some point.

Random question from the depths of my mp3 collection: who knew that Moby did an Industrial album? And that it was fucking awesome with awesome sauce?

Obviously I did as I went to see him when he toured it years ago but you might not and so I'm telling you because today's listen reminded me how fucking awesome it is.

Anyway, this is it here:

That's When I Reach For My Revolver is the closest the album has to a single so listen to that first but the whole thing is excellent.

I saw him tour when he played a load of that and a load of his dance stuff, around the time of 'Into the Blue'.

In other news, the new Foster The People album really is excellent.

That must have been a confusing gig. When I saw him he was just touring that single album on its own, which made sense given how he'd made his name up until that point.

It was a minor festival gig, so I don't think anyone cared. He played 'revolver' and a few others from that album, dance stuff like 'Feeling so real' and prior things like 'Go' and even '2000', which was intense and kinda scary. Had a full band on stage and two live drummers. Was actually a great gig.

That sounds fucking awesome. Though I say that as someone who liked his dance stuff and this album; anyone who came to it knowing only stuff like 'Feeling So Real' would've had their mind blown (and likely hated it obviously).

I'd love to hear 1000 live, that would be awesome. Like the soundtrack from Club Doom its utterly ridiculous but still excellent and memorable from my youth.

I like Asher and people don't realise that he's an excellent freestyler as well. It's a shame that his production is lacking because he could be brilliant.

Bunch of Kiwis calling themselves 'Fat Freddy's Drop'. It was an amazing set, other than perhaps having the rather large trombonist wear a tight body suit. Even from far back, we could see more than we wanted.

Shady Cypher 2014

Slaughterhouse! Yelawolf! Eminem! Accapella.

Frankly, it's the only thing in hip hop worth listening to these days. I haven't heard any decent hip hop for a long long time.

So I listened to the steam of the new Wu-Tang album, A Better Tomorrow.

36 Chambers it certainly is not. Wu-Tang Forever it is not. The W it is not. Iron Flag it kinda is. 8 Diagrams it sorta is too.

And by that I mean, it ain't good.

As an aside it has the dubious pleasure of the first album I've ever heard of where The Internet People have had a damn good complain about the font on the album cover.

This might be old hat to folks given that it was released back in 2010 but there's a compilation album floating around that pairs the Wu-Tang and various affiliates with some of the most brutal dubstep I've ever heard and, unsurprisingly, it's fucking awesome. There's an atmosphere of subtle evil lurking over the entire thing that makes for compelling listening and it comes very recommended based on the few listens I've given it so far.

D'Angelo's new album, Black Messiah, is pretty good. If you liked Voodoo, like how I liked Voodoo, you will like Black Messiah.

I've got a weird 1st-love story behind Voodoo so it has a strange teleportation influence over my brain area though; so to have an album from D'ange that sounds like D'ange from 14 odd years ago, or however long it's been, this new album conjures up old memories for me despite being new. Strange old world.

I quite enjoyed reading about Liquid Swords there. I didn't even know that "I Gotcha Back" had a video nor that Shogun Assassin skits, which are so instrumental to the album, were thrown in at the eleventh hour.

I have Lonewolf & Babycart on DVD because of that album. I bloody love Liquid Swords and Babycart.

Frank Turner fanboy that I am, I'm onto my sixth or seventh listening of his latest album 'Positive songs for negative people' (the title felt very :attitude:). Some great anthems there, and I think 'Get Better' is going to become one of my set marching songs alongside the New Pornographers' 'Use it'.

Been so heavily into Frank that I haven't actually taken the cellophane off the new 'Bellowhead' yet.
