A month or two ago, I had to send the Leaf in for a warranty repair, for what ended up being a wiring fault. Essentially, all of the posh sensors on the car that detected objects around it, the parking sensors, the self-driving systems and emergency braking systems, the blind-spot warning lights etc. all started playing up -- the car realised this was happening and disabled the various systems accordingly, so I took it to Nissan and they diagnosed and fixed the wiring fault, no harm no foul. After I got the car back though, I noticed the steering wheel was really... scratchy. Like if I turned it lock-to-lock, there'd be a 'scratching' sound coming from behind the wheel, like something was scraping. I figured it wasn't anything to bother them about, I couldn't hear it over the music, so whatever. Then about three weeks back my airbag warning light came on and stayed on, so I took it back in for another diagnosis and repair. This time they said it was a broken clock spring -- which I'm guessing explains the scratchy sound. They needed to get the part in, so it took a week and a bit but they replaced it on Thursday and now I've got the car back. Except I noticed today that when driving straight on, the steering wheel is on the piss by quite some margin. I figured perhaps the tracking was off, but then I remembered that they didn't have to fuck about with the wheels themselves, just the steering wheel -- so they obviously hadn't put it back on properly. To make matters worse, if I engage the self-driving system then everything goes awry because the steering assist must use the wheel position as it's sensor rather than the steering rack or whatever, because the steering assist will literally drive me off the road by re-centering the steering wheel. You'd think they'd get this shit right, being a main dealer. Perhaps with it being warranty work they just don't give a shit. Annoyingly, I was supposed to be going on a long motorway journey on Monday which the self-driving would have been lovely for, but I dare not risk it now. I guess that's just an excuse to take the Boxster instead, though, so not *all* bad. |

In my experience if one takes the left lane, the cars pull out as they expect one to go left, not over, and the right lane they pull out expecting one to go right. I just straddle both now It's madness and I just realized it isn't even a roundabout as the blue line has no give markings (purple) against it. |

It is indeed not a roundabout. You should pick left because if there's more than one car sat at that give way in the middle, it'll block the right hand lane from going the way you want to go. |

Car Question: Will an OBD reader tell me things that are up with my car, even if the check engine light is not on? i.e. are there error codes worth fixing that don't warrent that light? The darn things are so cheap it seems worth getting one if it'll have a chance of finding an issue. One of my cars is at 70k miles and the other at 100k, so I'm sure some things are wearing out or whatever. |

Yes. But there are loads of different ones with varying levels of diagnostics. Just have a read up before you buy on your cars model and what it can do. Or just buy the second cheapest one. |

Chains still stretch and occasionally fail, just not as much as belts. The Nissan Micra of all things, with its hardcore 1 and 1.2 litre engines, is particularly bad for it. |

I've finally managed to do something physical modificationy for the superb - somehow after 5 years I've not needed pads or discs, and the pedal has gone a bit squishy the last few weeks, so I've put brembo stuff all round on hold at the shop at Kidderminster. Not an upgrade as such, basically OEM performance replacement, but it pops the seal. Last year insurance was £214, this year its £241, much as I want to do stuff to it that is so cheap I don't wanna to give it up. Silly really. |

Howling Mad Richard. He was certifiable, he got a warning from the CAA for buzzing his dad on the golf course. Remember after one lesson we went low level over the sea and I'm pretty sure the wing was about a foot off the water in a turn. He's an airline pilot now. |
