You mean we can't move to a remote part of the Scottish Highlands? Spoilsport.

Don't forget that shit new petrol is coming out this month, you can check if your car runs on it here.

My Lexus does not, as it demands the finest fuels known to humanity.

EDIT - Apparently those of us helping the planet out by keeping an older car on the road will be rewarded by paying up to 12p per litre more for fuel.

MINI fine, MX5 not fine.

Main issue is the VW group cars, where there are a fair number in the 10-20yr old window that aren't fine, which will catch folks out.

The BMW just magically fills itself up with fuel so I have no idea whether I need to worry or not :DD

I'm already using future fuel!

No discernable difference in performance from my Auris.

Same RON so power should be the same, however less fuel efficient, so you might see MPG drop.

The ethanol content doesn't play well with stuff like seals and pipes and fine filters and other such things that weren't designed for it.

Australia has had it for a while and apparently it can lead to a slight drop in power, shittier MPG and mechanics steer clear of it because of the damage it can cause to components in some cars.

It looks like in the UK E10 will replace E5 (E5 is the current standard unleaded), so the choice will be either E10 or super unleaded, you won't be able to choose between E10, E5 and super.

Although one of the chaps in one of my WhatsApp groups says we're not getting E10 over here, which would be nice if it's the case.

Shell V-Power remains E5.

If they stop producing E5. You will have to get E10 at some point.

I would not worry about wear on your engine. You will swap the car before that :)

E10 has been the 'default' cheap petrol option out here in Aus for as long as I've been here (11 years and counting). I don't think anyone really cares much or thinks about it.

I've never really bothered to look into it. We bought a fairly crap MY2005 car when we arrived and were bunging E10 into it the whole time. 11 years later and it's still running so I think for anyone that treats their car as essentially a kind of white-goods, it's a reassuring anecdote.

However, I do put 'better' petrol in my mowers and garden tools :metul:

It looks like E5 will not be widely available so it will be either E10 or super unleaded to choose from, which is fine I'll just switch to super, for the mileage I do these days the extra cost will be negligible.

However there does seem to be some truth to the rumour that we're just keeping E5 and super over here, so who knows.

Also, one year of Lexus ownership comes up in November!

I don't know much about fuel refineries but why are they going to keep making lower octane E5 fuel just for what amounts to one town's worth of people? Or is it a legal thing to do with Manx law?

Well I guess E5 will still be made for other markets in the world?

This is what EVF (one of the two petrol station organisations on the island) posted on their Twitter account back in June.

I don't know, I thought that it was usually refined fairly locally from oil which is the thing that gets shipped around. But if the only difference between E5 and super unleaded is additives then maybe they will keep making standard E5 just for the IOM.

I have fairly vague memories of mum using 'four star' petrol to fill up her car (it was possibly the old Cortina they had)

Yeah I remember dad filling up with choice of two or four star petrol.

Green shield stamps too!

Garlic bread, spangles etc, what…

I remember when you could tell the 4 star was crap because the engine started pinking. Not my car, my dad's company car.

I also remember when he got his first company diesel, one winter (back when winter was winter, not just an extra-wet couple of weeks) it refused to turn on for what felt like hours while the glow plugs heated. And then it stalled and we had to sit through it again but now sat excitingly in the middle of the road!

Remember about 1,000 years ago when I bought a Merc? I finally got it yesterday.

I got in and broke the centre console

The aircon has broken in my Lexus, fucking cheap nasty Toyota knock-off rubbish. I don't think it needs regassing as I had that done at the start of summer, so it's probably the condenser or compressor or some other component that's failed.

I'll get it booked in at a local independent garage and get it fixed, rather than use it as an excuse to get a new car.....

I got into my car yesterday and I was backing out of the garage I noticed there was a big black spider on my passenger wing mirror, and it'd made a fairly hefty web. There were a lot of spiderlings too.

Fortunately there are cans of bug spray situated at key strategic locations around the house.

Poor Elgrand, it popped it's radiator then got driven home ... Rather warm. The remaining coolant came out nice and clear though so that's a good sign for the head gaskets, it's probably fine.

I'll do the oil and filter, air filter, spark plugs, belts and remove the 2 rear cats (a known problem, it's a whole thing) while I'm at it.

It's actually pretty not rusty underneath as far as bodywork goes but I could really do with replacing the whole exhaust and if I do it would seem rude to not make it sound nice.

The expensive Japanese chickens have come home to roost, hopefully there's not too many.

Hope it’s all easily fixed and not too costly. Nice looking van, crazy Wing mirrors! How’s it configured inside? Could you use as a camper?

It's pretty cool, there's 3 rows, all move back and forward, the middle row can swivel around to face the back, the back can flip up out the way to be more van like, there's electrically operated curtains, which are wild. It's all in Japanese and none of the screens do anything because Japan, it's 4x4 with center locking diff and has a 3.5 V6 all of which is incredibly unnecessary. I love it.

Sorry yeah, I meant to ask did you import it yourself? I see a fair few companies just selling imported performance JDM cars and/or Vans and SUVs.

I've put down a refundable holding deposit for the Nissan Ariya.

It seems to have increased in price by about £5k since I first heard about the car. But it will be available around the time the Renault Zoe's contract ends, so will be good to have the option.

Loving these videos highlighting how you can cross pretty much any depth of water in any car as long as you go fast enough (I think some of these probably weren't going fast enough):

Ouch. I'm no car expert, but I assume if an engine drinks a whole load of water, it's a hell of an expensive repair. I bet the local garage loves that place, it must keep them going.
