Last night I was told about this piece of insanity: The Lotus Carlton.

It's beautifully bonkers. I've rebuilt the engine in one of these, they're a strange combination of mundane 90s parts and super-car exotica

I can only imagine. My dad had a Carlton and I remember getting a bollocking for turning the air con on as it rendered the car incapable of going up the hill we were climbing.

It's a bit more low tech than that, one simply looks at the tyres and decides if they appear to be inflated enough or not.

Turns out I really wasn't lying about this.

Now, in fairness to myself, I have thought that the rear passenger side tyre has been looking a little on the spongy side for a while, but since, y'know, 20 year old Toyota Camry that I just waft around in, when I use it at all (it generally moves about once per week), I didn't go to the next stage in the process and actually check the pressure.

However, today I had to fill it up with petrol (fuck me a tank of petrol lasts a long time now), and as I was brimming the tank (which adds a bit of weight over that tyre I suppose), I thought, 'Hmmm, that tyre does look rather spongy, I shall check the pressure'.

So after paying for the petrol I drove off the forecourt and parked up, got my tyre pressure gauge out.

Erm, yeah, 10.5 psi, and this was after a drive - oops. It's supposed to be 38psi when cold. (Well, 33 or 38 according to the little sticker thing inside the door, depending on load and speed.)

Anyway, all sorted now, clearly it's losing pressure (very slowly), I'll check it more often in future.

All cars need air in the tyres, even old ones!

Car has done well today, it's done 2 full temperature runs without losing a hose or anything (important) falling off. Run 1 showed up a lean mixture knock under light acceleration which was mostly rectified on run 2 by replacing the #72 jets in the primaries with #81s although I'll take it up another few points as there's still slight knock under full load at the low end. The new Massiver radiator kept the temp steady at 89 degrees when driving but at idle the fan cuts in and out a bit sporadically, must be something to do with the location of the switch and lets it creep up close to 100 which isn't ideal. I suspect putting in a lower temp switch or just a manual override will sort that problem out.

I'd have a lower temp switch - manual override doesn't add much beside the potential for human error.

Ach, even with #85 jets in the primaries it's still knocking under light throttle. I need to get the wide band in, so I know what's going on.

It indicates 12 degrees at idle which is right enough for the engine but I've not tdc checked it so the marks could be out I guess. That's a good shout I'm changing the plugs soon anyway so I'll tdc it while I'm in there.

If you should find yourself lean at partial throttle you could try increasing the primary main jet size. remember to catch the fuel in your kid's milk glass.

Going to go and take a look at this nice old barge this afternoon.

Posh Toyota!

Lot of car for the money. My Camry has been tentatively valued at £175 on part-ex. We'll be needing some movement on that figure.
