Other than that, totally clean bill of health, it's a 20 year old car that's basically in perfect working order.

Rest of the service was as expected, oil change, oil filter change etc, full check over the car as a whole.

CAMRY IS THE FOREVER CAR.

When is the M4 being delivered?

I believe I have identified the required bushes, they are not expensive and by all accounts fitting them is fairly straightforward (not that I'd attempt to do it myself, of course).

The exhaust I think I'll leave as it was 'borderline' and I'll most likely do maybe 1000 miles between now and this time next year, assuming the working from home situation remains the same. As such I'll reappraise the exhaust at the next service.

I was going to order a double DIN head unit to replace the factory fit cassette/radio/CD combo, but TBH it doesn't seem worth it since I'll hardly ever be in the car.

Have you thought about saving £400 and buying a second hand CD player instead

Turns out they can get the bushes after all, OFFICIAL TOYOTA BUSHES cost £35 for a pair instead of £4.08p but I'll go with the £35 ones as I can be sure they're the right ones.

Amusingly, the two bits of the exhaust that need replacing cost....... £350 and £450 respectively. Needless to say I will not be spending £800 (+ labour) on the exhaust.

The lady at the garage said it was ridiculous and will get prices on generic parts for me, and also said there's a place in Douglas that can make up this sort of thing for a lot less than that.

(I might even just leave it, since it doesn't desperately need doing.)

NostraZardoz predicts you will spend more than the price of the Camry on bits before buying a performance car.

Does it have tyre pressure sensors?

Author:  Hearthly [ Thu Jun 18, 2020 14:48 ]
Post subject:  Re: Gas Guzzling Money Pits

It's a bit more low tech than that, one simply looks at the tyres and decides if they appear to be inflated enough or not.

Looking at the listing I'd say the MUCH CHEAPER ones are the right ones. Also they should be easy to fit as they're split (diagonal line from centre to lower right) rather than solid so just pop over.

Post subject:  Re: Gas Guzzling Money Pits

Yeah I'm almost certainly paying way over the odds for the SUPER GENUINE TOYOTA BUSHES when the cheaper ones will be the right ones and do the job just as well. It's an extra £32 so I'll put up with that, fuck all chance I'm spending £800 on exhaust bits though.

Also aircon regas is booked in for tomorrow, but I don't have a price on it.

Aircon regas done. £78.

Blows super duper icy cold now.

Just the bushes and the exhaust bits left to do and then I will have a perfect 20 year old car.

EDIT - The chap at the garage place was swooning over the car, saying what gorgeous condition it's in and how 'they don't make them like this anymore'.

I'll see what the price turns out to be for the generic parts, or to have them made up at Island Exhausts. Obviously it'd need to be a fuck lot less than the £800 Toyota want for original manufacturer parts.....

Centre & rear exhaust silencers, according to the service report.

A mate has said to just leave them until they start blowing, which he reckoned could be months and months away before it starts happening.

Used a good headlight restoration kit today, only £10 off The Amazon too! Started off using sanding pad attached to drill (too small to fit my polisher) but quickly reverted to doing by hand as it was making a few worrying marks. The polishing pad was fine on the drill though so that saved time. Very pleased with it.

We are taking delivery of a new Renault Zoe next week, testing the waters of electric car ownership. Keeping the yeti, but hoping the Zoe will prove itself of handling all our car needs, depending on how much we end up needing two cars.

Took it for a test drive and pulling away at roundabouts was a fucking delight.

Nice motor, dude :)

Both the Celica and the Yaris passed their MOTs today, without any cause for serious concern. All the tyres are apparently close to the limit on the Yaris, though.

I would be a bit miffed if my car failed its MOT at the moment considering it’s gone about 150 miles in 4 months.

Exciting car news!

My claim has finally gone somewhere, the other side is paying my claim in full but isn't accepting liability, so it isn't completely over, but at least I have a very small lump of cash heading my way. (Final steps are for my insurer to start a separate proceeding to get the cost of writing off the car back from them, as they only settled my expenses and compensation. Until that happens it'll have to stay as a fault claim, which is annoying)
It's only taken a year to get to this point...

Good timing, as Donna's parents have offered me their MX5 which they never use. 1998 Mk2 MX5 1.8i S, 29k miles on the clock!, non rusted sills. All for the princely sum of £1k, which I couldn't turn down. So the 3 Series is up on ebay, and i'm picking up the MX5 next weekend.

Looks to be in pretty good condition (check out the carpet on the wall of the garage, always a good sign), and D's stepdad is super anal about buying stuff (Spreadsheets out the wazoo, Vision and Doc would love him), so it would have been researched to an inch of its life prior to purchase.
I'll most likley get rid of the chrome style bar though...
