A decent plan, but don’t forget old cars go wrong too, so might not actually save you all that much.

Yeah, that's the downside to the plan.

I thought you liked the Yaris—you do quite a number of miles so would be good to keep a newish reliable car, I’d have thought.

I do like it, but you know me, get easily bored. A better description is simply that I haven't found anything to dislike about it. But yes, having a newer and reliable car, that I know is reliable, does make more sense.

Got to weigh up the pros and cons. If I do get a cheap snotter, it'd have to be something reasonably reliable and comfortable. Auto preferable and decent fuel economy would be good, but isn't as important if I've only got £1,000-£1,500 in the car in the first place.

Except you could be £350 worse off a year straight away with road tax, plus however much the extra fuel costs, throw in a couple of the inevitable bills on a car that age and you might fairly soon end up paying more for driving an old shitheap around.

The correct answer is a stage 3 tune on the Yaris.

Bopping the cruise control on set to 70mph and cruising the the road word at 50mph, the Bangbus did 60mpg over 460miles. Which pleases me.

Spent some time looking for the source of the coolant leak this weekend and it's looking like it's from the bottom right radiator connection. Sadly something I'm not comfortable attempting as it requires the removal of the front bumper. Thought it might have bene the 'temporary' hose I found leaking last time but that's held up well! I replaced the silicon hose with the proper stuff though while I was faffing.

On a cheerier note I redid the Mr Muscle treatment down the cast iron side of my turbo to free the vanes and got the actuator arm moving better again with some elbow grease and WD40 so she feels much more zippy now.

The Yaris is costing me around £420 per month at the moment, including MOT costs, fuel, insurance and the cost of the loan that I took out to get it (and to pay off the stupid PCP on the 530d GT)

In theory I should be able to get between £10K and £10.5K for the Yaris, which would pay off a significant chunk of the loan outstanding.

But, the more I think about it, the more I struggle to see how a cheap snotter would up cheaper enough to justify the switch.

Stage 3 Tune it is, then!

I am tempted by this. The SE Technology, has all the toys.

The leasing of this is quite cheap, but not sure how the 1 litre engine will be, for a daily drive.

I have had a t-cross with the 1-litre engine, and it was nippy.

I do like my golf, but it will be 4 years old and 80,000 miles, when i get chance to buy it. I would have to tax it too.

I am limited at what i can do as my finances are bad, my IVA runs out in Feb, which is 3 months after I need to replace the car. Which is a pain, as although I will be getting a car allowance, it will be hard to get a load at a decent rate....

And I called it right on TPMS, despite Hyundai themselves telling me it didn't have it.

It’s a consumable so probably not covered anyway. Usually those dealer warranties are engine and drivetrain only.

Plus they’ll do anything to squirm out of paying out. They’re almost worthless in my experience.

I know, but I can be very persuasive given the right tools. Which I don't have in this case. :)

Probably just a new clutch needed right? Simple enough for any old garage?

I read and watched a load of reviews, and made an informed decision that it'd be a car I'd really like.

There are no truly 'eccentric' cars these days, (certainly not at that price point), so I chose the i30-N Fastback on the basis it was a mass-produced car built to a cost, that offered significantly better value than all of its rivals, with the performance, kit, toys, and fun factor that I was after.

And TPMS, even though Hyundai told me it didn't have TPMS.

And I called it right.

So yeah, overall, very happy, whatever the perceived deficiencies in my choice process may have been.

I agree, and am of the feeling that there are very few terrible, awful cars anymore and that pretty much anything is going to have a reasonably acceptable level of reliability and function. It's not like the old days with the lemons and the absolute shit heaps. Most cars are fine, almost boringly competent.

There weren't many independent places near me that did clutches - I'm guessing it's a step up from brakes and tyres and exhausts. I got one from Formula One Autocentres, who were cheaper than Halfords and must be good, as they work on racing cars.

That's where my car is right now. Not Preston, a clutch specialist. Less than half the Halfords quote and should be done by the end of today. Which is handy as we're off to Kendal Calling on Thursday.

Apparently, their "card machine is broken" but cash will be fine ;)

Never go to Halfords unless you want cup holders or windscreen wipers (although saying that they turned around a new battery for me very quickly when the one in my Merc died while I was out delivering Amazon parcels in Leicester).

I’m lucky I have two garages local to me that I trust. One for MOTs, services and simple issues and the other is a VAG specialist who diagnosed and fixed my engine issues when my other one couldn’t.

This has been a fun few days.. my IVA means I can't get a lease till it finishes in Feb. For the same reason I can't get a loan yet to buy my company car... so that is out.

This place will give me car finance, I know the apr is massive but I am kinda stuck. I need a car from December till Feb, then I can look at better alternative.

Any suggestions?

Can you get a long-term hire from someone like Enterprise or Sixt? Getting a loan from somewhere like that is likely to make your finances worse.

I am getting a car allowance of £4920 a year.. this would cover the running of the car, loan or hire.

I could enquire.

Have you tried zopa? You may get a similar starting rate but you can repay at anytime without penalty, indeed you can refinance with a new zopa Loan without penalty, which you may be able to secure at a lower rate next year when the Iva ends.
