I'm calling it now, the Fastback has TPMS, despite what the lady from Hyundai said.

The lack of TPMS is literally the only thing I was narked about, and by the POWER OF MY MIND I have decided the Fastback has it after all.

The i30-N Fastback has the same spec sheet as the website, so no TPMS, but also no heated window and 60/40 folding rear seats, which it clearly has.

I think this is like Brexit, I just need to believe more, and the Fastback N will have TPMS.

Car should have been on the island yesterday but the Steam Packet prioritised rally cars for the Manx National Rally, so it's still sat at Heysham >:( The dealer got in touch to let me know, he says he's got four cars stuck there. He's hoping it'll get over today, but then he'll have to register it, tax it, and give it a full showroom valet as he promised me it would be absolutely pristine.

So realistically we're looking at the start of next week now probably.

Either that or the dealer has taken my £6K deposit and spent it all on blackjack and hookers.

Oh yes and I also know the exact car that's coming over too. When the guy gave me the details of it (Jan 2019, Special Blue, around 2000 miles, ex-demo) I popped onto Autotrader. There aren't many Fastbacks around full stop so I quickly zoned in on the one I reckoned it was. I asked him for the UK reg yesterday and he came back to me with it this morning, and yes, it's the one.

(Check out the UK reg in my previous post.)

He's added on £995, but for that he's had to get it from Cambridge to Heysham, get it over on the boat, and when it's here he'll be taxing it, registering it, and giving it a showroom valet, so there'll be bugger all in it for him. He'd already said there was practically nothing in the i30 and that he'd be trying to make his profit out of the ST.

But we've got the numbers right there. £25K it will have cost him (unless Cambridge car dealers make a point of giving discounts to IOM car dealers), £26K he's selling it to me for, with all the expenses I just detailed - he'll be making £200-£300 or so, tops.

He's giving me £10K for the ST, at the top end he'll get £12K for it, plus it needs an alloy refurbishing (thanks to a freak kerbing disaster that totally wasn't my fault), it's due a service, and it'll want a full showroom preparation.

Seems reasonable to me.

Yeah, no way he paid £25k for the car. No prep by the cambridge dealer, no warranty provided, different liabilities involved etc...

It doesn't matter, as the price he paid wouldn't have been available to you as a private buyer anyway, so you haven't been stiffed. I expect it would have cost you at least the extra grand to get it into the IoM if you had bought it from the Cambridge dealer yourself, so it seems a fair deal to me.

I suspect he will be making several multiples of the amount you think Hearthly, regardless of what he says. You’re not being ripped off, he’s running a business and has substantial overheads.

I have no idea what the specific mark-up on a Hyundai i30N is new, but I do know the percentage increases usually in opposite proportion to volume. High sellers have smaller margins, but even so I would imagine it would be likely 15% on what the manufacturer charges the dealer, if not more.

On prestige brands it can be more than 200%
A friend who works for a charity contacted Aston a few years ago to see if he could blag a DB9 for an auction for free. Aston declined, but did offer to let him have one at what it cost them to make without their markup before being “sold” to a dealer. That figure was £29k minus beer change.

Well it's not like I go in completely blind. I check out what similar cars are going for in the UK, decide how much I think any given car is worth paying for, and what I want on trade in.

So yes, if after all of that is taken into account I think the price is fair, I just pay it.

After all, it's not like one would go into McDonald's and start arguing about how much a Big Mac costs. Anyway, haggling is seedy Arthur Daley style bottom feeding and I wish to have no part in such behaviour of low moral character. It corrupts the soul and lessens the mind.

Mcdonalds don't cost £20k. If you go in with the mindset they are overcharging, you are negotiating, not haggling. If you are happy at paying more then that is fine, it is your money.

More to the point, know that you are overpaying, and don't instead conclude your local second car dealer must be working for "bugger all".

Wheeler Dealers did a Honda CVCC? Something like that. They made it as an eco car and used one of those TPM set ups to monitor the pressure. I guess the best way to find out the offset (if any) is to check your pressure by hand and then connect it up.

Either way it *should* at least give you a rough idea if any are getting low.

We got £10K knocked off 'cause the roof needed doing, but that was 'cause the roof clearly needed doing and wasn't reflected in the price.

I'm not sure it'd qualify as 'haggling' though.

The house was up at £194K.

We offered £184K on the grounds the roof needed doing and that would cost about £10K.

Our offer was accepted.
