I love my Type R when I get the chance to but 95% of my driving is between work and home in stop start traffic and to be honest in that scenario it does the opposite of excel, absolutely fucking tanks fuel for the privilege (I get about 23mpg) and also my wife refuses to drive it. My plan when I bought it was always to change it for an EV after a few years but I just went and test drove a four year old Leaf and I actually really liked it. The looks might grow on me I guess but inside it's a nice enough place to be and it has exec saloon levels of quietness, it's just such a relaxing ride. Plus not having to worry abut the absolute myriad of stupid fucking things that there are to go wrong with ICE cars is something that really appeals to me. Family discussions are ongoing. |

Just been doing the man maths and this car swap would be self-financing. Currently spending £120pm in fuel and tax whereas the Leaf should be in the region of £20-25 in electricity and the difference buys me a car that's five years newer. The other scenario is I could sell the Type R and buy something petrol powered for the same money that uses half as much fuel and pays almost no tax but I do not want to do that. |

Yeah, that last option is the worst of all worlds. I wanted an EV but they are either way too expensive or don’t have the range (darling). I need to get to Southampton on two charges as it would be our only car and for what I could afford (an oldish Leaf) it wouldn’t cut the mustard. Great for your use case though! So I went for an Octavia vRS instead. |

That really is a worst case scenario for a frantic VTEC powered car like the Type-R, I've owned several high revving VTECs over the years and the one thing I always hated about them was being in stop-start traffic - which we don't get much of at all over here but it was still annoying when it happened. TBH if your driving is mostly bland commuting, just get the most cost effective car possible would be my advice. I only like to have a 'nice to drive' car because I do the best part of 30 miles over the derestricted mountain road every day. When we lived in Douglas (which is where I work), I had a 1.5 Peugeot 106 diesel that did 66mpg, because the car at that point was nothing more than a commodity item like a kettle, since it spent nearly all its time in 20-40mph speed limits, in traffic. I've always said that if they ever impose an all-island speed limit here (which would probably land at 60mph or suchlike), I'd just get a Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost or something, because who fucking cares at that point? |

Yeah, I do get to give it a blast fairly regularly but the other thing with those that I hadn't appreciated is that they won't even go into fast VTEC mode until they reach a certain temperature, which with so many short journeys is often not before I've got where I'm going. |

The only time I got less than 30mpg out of my EP3 was when I spent a day twatting it round oulton park. Basically nailed on otherwise. It did like it some oil though. My superb is fucking appalling at economy. 15 miles each way every day and I'm lucky if I ever see a number starting with a 3, even using high-RON fuel and trundling about on cruise. It wasn't great on a clean run at 70 up to Blackpool today either. Then again it doesn't go below 25 when I blast through country lanes in manual-sport either. |

Do you do manual calcs or rely on the onboard trip? My M140 never shows less than 25 or more than 27 regardless of how I drive. Frankly I think it’s bullshit and keep meaning to do manual calcs but I’m not sure I care enough seeing as I don’t “commute” to work |

The civic didn't have a computer so it was manual, but I go by the computer on the superb. Helen used it to commute to Brum on Monday - 30 miles each way, more constant higher speed - so that should push the tank average up slightly; rough manual calculation says 28mpg on 13 gallons. |

The M140 does better around town than the mk1 Focus ST which is my work wagon. I’m fortunate that I don’t do much mileage so I don’t really care. Across both cars we do less than 10k pa and that’s a busy year with lots of trips, it’s probably closer to 8k pa in reality. |

Took my friend to the airport in the MG this morning, 3am start for a 6am flight. About 60 miles to Edinburgh altogether, got 40 miles in and lost power on the motorway. He's a learner but managed to get it stopped in an emergency layby safely enough. We had a quick check of wires and pipes and smacked the fuel pump a bit which usually fixes everything so I took over and we cracked on. 30sec later all power lost again, still felt like fuel starvation so managed to dive across the gravel shoulder and get it stopped on a concrete pad under a bridge, these are weird places to be in the dark. Fucked about for a while and figured out the problem is a bad earth on the pump so it's making a bit of noise but there's next to zero pressure at the carbs and little flow so now we're ripping speaker cables out the doors and stripping them with our teeth to make temp. Earth cables. Fine, that sorted it, healthy fuel pressure and full float bowls. Oh, massive fuel leak from the plastic filter in the engine bay, guess the fuel pressures been low for a while. Bypass the filter, tighten all the clips up again and we're off, car's feeling good but the indicators have stopped working. Got him to the airport at 5:45 and he made it in with 2 minutes to spare after abandoning his hold luggage in the car, fucking precision planning there. Enjoyable drive home after fixing the flashers with only the comforting diff whine, suspension rattles and tyre rub to listen to. TL:DR old cars are shit |
