In other news, I've been driving my little Yaris Hybrid for just over 6 months now and I'm not bored of it - and have found only one thing that annoys me (the windscreen washer jet which I may have mentioned before)

This might be a keeper!

It's literally a washer jet, which hurtles along and drops water onto your windscreen as it passes by.

But it's expensive.

Is there video footage of this, where many cars activate it at once?

When you press the button it causes a minor localised temporal disturbance, where it resets the windscreen back to as new condition. It works really well, but the paradoxes get too much to handle.

Post subject:  Re: Gas Guzzling Money Pits

None of those are correct, unfortunately.

On most cars, you have windscreen washer jets on the bonnet, pointed at the windscreen. You pull the stalk, and washer fluid sprays directly on to the windscreen, and then (in most cars) your wiper kicks in and cleans the screen. Some cars have really annoying wipers that take forever to kick in, others do it too quickly before the screenwash has really landed - very few cars in my experience get that balance right.

And then there's my Yaris Hybrid.

  • It has one windscreen washer jet.
  • It is not on the bonnet.
  • It is situated on the wiper arm.
  • It points not at the windscreen, but along the wiper blade itself.
  • It is not adjustable.

When you pull the stalk, a jet of washer fluid streams out horizontally along the windscreen. It's under quite high pressure. Some lands on the wiper blade/windscreen, most shoots off to the side of the car and drenches any pedestrian unfortunate enough to be within range.

After about a second of pulling, the wiper kicks in and wipes the screen, and the washer jet moves with it so it then sprays the windscreen just in front of the wiper arm on its travels.

It does a reasonable job of cleaning the screen, so it gets a tick in that regard. But the massive waste of washer fluid while you wait for the wiper to kick in and the potential for assault claims mean I have to give it a pathetic 78 bananas.

I remember a bloke where I used to work had an old mini, the washers were broken so he would just squeeze a fairly liquid bottle that he had up near the sun visor with a tube going out of the window. Do that.

The "blade with washer on" technique isn't uncommon on trucks and other vehicles with large windscreens, for obvious reasons.

I'm not sure why it's on your Yaris.

Just realised I didn't get the car MOTed in June, and now need to do it before year end in order to tax the car.

Most garages are of course closed, but there's availability at the local Halfords - wouldn't be my normal choice, but has any body got any horror stories about MOTs there?

Unless you go to a dodgy back alley garage, an MOT is an MOT these days, it's all computerised and monitored up the wazoo.
Halfords will be fine.

I updated the address earlier this year, so there's a chance I they'd sent a letter before I updated.

TBH I was certain I'd got the thing MOTed in June, but gov.uk says otherwise.

I don’t think they send them out either. There doesn’t appear to be any formal MOT notification system that I’m aware of, other than getting stopped by the police, which happened to me this year as I’d forgotten to do the Focus

So I didn't get chance to look at the Jaguar as planned (I had a job in one of our data centres which is close to the dealers, but a 2-3 hour job turned into an 8 hour job so that was that one fucked).

However, due to a slight fiscal adjustment I am now looking in a different price bracket, £20-£25K is about the target, maybe £30K at a stretch. May as well get something nice before Brexit crashes the roof in. (We're getting some money from my granddad's house sale, my dad has got a third of it and he's splitting his share in half between me and my brother. Mrs Hearthly can have half of it to get carpets and have some decorating done and all that boring pointless shit I'm not even remotely interested in and will have nothing to do with, I'm spending the rest on a car.)

I'm thinking about some sort of crazy V8 thing, just because I've never had one. Despite my horrific experience with the CLS, I'm feeling drawn to a Merc E63, from when they were still putting the proper 6.2L V8 in it with 525bhp.

They have a slight issue with a head bolt failing and destroying the engine, so you need to make sure that's been done, or if not, budget £2K to get it done.

I know you can get the same engine in the C63 but I prefer the looks of the E63.

Something like this.

Post subject:  Re: Gas Guzzling Money Pits

Radcliffe is not exactly a salubrious location. House sold for £120K, (this is a large three-bed semi in good repair with substantial gardens front and rear!), that gets split three ways, less fees, then me and my brother get half of a third each, so it'll most likely work out to around £19.5K each.

I've got £10K of a loan left from the Type-R I want pay off, I'm going to tip a chunk over to Mrs Hearthly for house shit that I refuse to be involved with in any way whatsoever, (I won't even pick up a paint brush, let alone anything else), so then it'll be:

ST trade-in (around £10.5K) + some of our cash in the bank + what's left from the house money = Amount to spend on car. (I don't want there to be any finance involved.)

So yes, that'll max out at around £30K, but I'd be happier at £25K or less.

Post subject:  Re: Gas Guzzling Money Pits

There's also the cam follower issue to make sure it's not got. Or whatever it is, the other thing that can kill that engine.

I'd still love an e63 estate, and even with that couple of known and easily rectifiable issues it's a shitload easier to maintain then a Jag, so I say get stuck in!

This superb is nice and all but it's still too fast. I just have to face needing something sketchy and slow or completely mental, in between doesn't work for me.

Post subject:  Re: Gas Guzzling Money Pits

If I was going Jag now I would actually be looking to get an XFR brought across, £25K seems to get you a nice one of those.

By all accounts the diesels have a lot of the problems, which are all but eliminated on the petrols.
