Not even a quarter through, but as it’s a PCP I won’t get anywhere near the 50% mark required for VT until near the end of the agreement.

Simply take your car to the Isle of Man and Hearthley will buy it.

We are back to land rover *again* on Wednesday evening to discuss their fuck ups.

By brilliant coincidence I pick up my superb Wednesday lunchtime, so if they manage to use a clean cloth I will be pissing myself.

Otherwise I'll be with the police on a suspected arson charge.

He's still going. Apparently the cars worth in the region of £60k and the owner wanted it super shiny as he's looking to sell.

It's going to have to very shiny indeed to raise that sort of money! It's a £30k car at best in a private sale.

It’s a 2006 with about 30k miles so somewhere between £30-40k looks about right.

It would barely be £60k off the forecourt.

I highly recommend watching the episode called 'Hard NOx' from the Netflix series 'Dirty Money', it's absolute eye-popping to see what shit they were up to.

It's an un-apologetically angry programme, to the extent that he goes for the Hitler angle. Which is perhaps taking things a bit far.....

Re emmissions: If it was "this is the test we will use to determine stuff" and the test determined stuff I find it hard to be massivy angry at a msnufacturerer for making something that does really well on the tests. It is a bit dubious, at most, I feel.

There's a difference between optimising the car so that it gets better results on the tests, and having the car detect test conditions and change its behaviour accordingly.

In the first scenario, you could feasibly get those results out of the car in normal driving by closely replicating the test conditions.

In the latter scenario, you can't.

I think it was more: "This is a test we will use to determine typical usage stuff" and the manufacturer made a thingy that went "when we are in test mode, I will give you the answers you want to see, when we are not in test mode I will maximise performance and fuck the emissions"

Yeah, the cars were fitted with so called "defeat devices" that enable them to operate differently during the tests than when out on the road. It's not the first time this has been tried and so there are already very specific rules against it. It's so obviously outrageous and stupid that I can't believe that anyone thought it was a good idea and they richly deserve to be as fucked as they can be.

In simple terms the cars would switch between two modes. When it detected it was under test conditions it would switch to to a low-emissions mode that would be ruinous for both performance and fuel consumption out on the road, but passed the emissions test.

When not under test conditions it would switch to its other mode which offered good performance and fuel consumption, but produced massively more NOx.

Notwithstanding the fact that defeat devices are explicitly forbidden and the cars wouldn't have been allowed on the road without them, there's the fact that they will have contributed directly to multiple human deaths when you account for the huge amounts of NOx they were pumping out into already polluted cities.

If you've got access to that Netflix programme I mentioned above, I'd very much suggest watching it. It's a case of massive corporate fraud and corruption, that will have been sanctioned at the highest levels of the organisations involved.

It looks even more amazeballs in the flesh.

Pretty happy with the Octavia now. It looks a bit bland (especially in grey) and it could be faster, but overall it's a solid car. I'll probably keep it as the workhorse no matter what happens now, as it's only done 103k miles and could last another ten years. If I get enough cash in the future get something like an MX-5 or a track car project for fun.

Either the NSX is a chubby bugger, or that parking space is especially slim.

I'd say it's about the same width as the 5GT (assuming it's a standard sized parking space) based on my experiences of trying to park the fucking thing.

//edit: Wider! 1,901mm (5GT) vs 1,940mm!

A snip at £175K!

Or with 1500 miles on for £128K.

I think they're cooler than a Ferrari or a Lambo though.

I love it, but don't think i'll ever get one. I'm a second hand performance car buyer, but i'm struggling to see where my next purchase will be when I start getting that sort of cash together again (if ever!).
I bought my old NSX when it was 10 years old, did 25,000 miles in it with no problems, servicing cost the same as any other Honda, just on a 6000 mile interval rather than a 12,000 mile interval. Parts were reasonable, and it didn't need any anyway, other than a replacement ABS sensor which cost £120.

All these uber tech hyper cars just don't seem like a reasonable second hand purchase, the risk factor of something going wrong is just too high and the cost of fixing it is likely to be crazy. It'll be interesting what happens to the prices of these in 10 years time.

I can't help thinking that hybrid cars will seem like an incredibly complex irrelevance once electric advances even a bit more. Sort of the worst of both worlds.

Plug-in hybrids and, uhh, whatever non-plug-in ones are called are worth distinguishing between. The former, in particular, are a useful stepping stone until we have a nationwide charging infrastructure.

Yeah, I understand why they make sense now but I was thinking about years down the line when these cars get older. I think that hybrid sports cars like that NSX will become a bit undesirable compared to a pure i.c. contemporary. People will either want cars with i.c. engines because they have souls and make a loud sound or they'll want newer electric ones because they'll probably be faster and cheaper to run.

Just had a search back, but not that I can find! I had it around 2001-2002 until 2004, not sure I even had a digital camera back then. Earliest pictures I can find anywhere are 2006.

That looks pretty nice Bik. How have you found the whole buying from the factory experience overall? It seemed like a hassle but now you have two very nice brand new cars has it been worth it?

I can't imagine ever buying brand new, I probably would if I could, maybe... I'd get massive guilt over it though I reckon!

One of the guys who works in our building was testing driving the Bentley 4x4, he's going over Rolls Royce next week to try one of those but currently prefers Land Rover over Bentley. Oh to have those problems.

Land rover and Listers have turned Helen's car into an absolute nightmare full of constantly putting different people with different stories in front of her, culminating in a meeting with 4 managers last night where a last ditch plan was agreed - only for the leaving "put it all in an email" being full of lies.

So that deal is going to be unwound, with unavoidable cost to us, and starting again, first stop being Skoda to have another go in kodiaqs.

The only thing wrong with the Skoda was the guy who 'left' making a marginal error on the order which they worked to compensate, including giving me a bunch of flowers to give to Helen 'because of the trouble she's had with land rover'.

Well, they could do better with tracking orders. Also Jesus I had to wait so long, inconsiderate other bastards buying cars.

In short, I guess 'if you want new, try to stomach the not-quite-ideal-spec you'll probably end up with buying out of the channel'.

What are the issues with Helen's car? I saw you said the finish wasn't as expected but I guess that's not the full extent of it.

Yeah waiting three months isn't ideal!
