A mate at work has offered me £21K cash for the Type-R, and this has caught my beady eye locally, plus the chap selling it has indicated he'd let it go for less than this. Sort of a sideways move in some regards but a bit more cultured than the Type-R. Dunno really, I've grown to genuinely like the Type-R despite its unapologetically hardcore 'track car' leanings, and it's not a bad car to live with day-to-day. It'll return 40mpg+ on a tank if driven carefully, bombproof Honda reliability and engineering, and whilst I'd never describe it as 'comfortable' it's an entirely acceptable daily driver - as well as being practical in terms of five doors, decent sized boot, very reasonable running costs and so on. (Plus it's got all the modern toys, tech and gadgets that one could desire.) I definitely need a car with a decent lick of speed as I often get a good clearish run over the mountain thanks to my frequently anti-social working hours and it's nice to 'make progress' at those times, but then again it'd be good to have something a bit more 'normal car' for when I'm just driving at the same speed as all the other traffic and listening to music. We shall see. The Golf R will be available for a test drive in a couple of days. I like the idea of a very fast estate car, for some reason. Attachment: wankercarfuckbollocks.JPG

My V6 is in the garage. Probable exhaust issues.  It's been blowing a bit since I got it but nothing major. Then I was going down a country lane in pitch black last week when I slowed down for a car coming the other way. Except he didn't slow down so I had to ditch it on the verge. Turns out the verge was much lower than the tarmac and I scraped the underside of the car. After that I was getting a rattling sound when accelerating. On Tuesday the engine management light came on and I lost most of the power. Sigh. |

I used to have a salmon pink Mk 1 Renault Laguna estate, until relatively recently, 2007 I think (that's how I roll ). It was a wreck, I'd had it for years, it'd done nearly 200,000 miles on a 2 litre petrol engine.... man I loved that big old armchair! No handling pretence, it wallowed more than your average hippo, but it was just SO damn comfy, those deep velour seats and soft French suspension. And oh my word, the loading bay was HUGE, I never bothered to clear it out, I basically had everything permanently sloshing around the back that I could ever need; all my site gear, equipment, spare equipment, chairs for sitting on site, flasks, heaps of drawings and files - everything but the kitchen sink. The old girl ran forever and saved my bacon once, some wagon had dropped an entire wheel on the M6 at 3am, which I smacked into at 80mph (cheers then). Just an awesome, awesome old car, which to my eternal regret, instead of patching her up and fitting a recon engine, I thought I'd smarten up my act and buy a nearly new Mondeo Ghia X 2.0d, which was the worse car I ever owned, even worse than my first car, which was an £80 wreck. I abandoned the old girl in the end for £500, for a floozie who broke my heart and wallet.

EXCITING ROVER UPDATE! On Sunday I poured 4 litres of oil I found in the garage into it. On Tuesday, I was hitting 50mph up a road and quite a lot of the oil left through the exhaust. The road visibility was about 20m behind me as a result. It's done it again, a couple of times, but keeps going. I will pour more radweld into it, get the men to wash it for £3 and plug the doofah in to see what The Brain tells me. |

You sound like Mrs Grim..., who refuses to get an estate as they're so much bigger (and no amount of telling her that they sit on the same wheelbase and are exactly the same size will change her mind on that). I can't think of a single downside to an estate over a hatchback / saloon, except they cost a little more. For starters, they're far easier to park Do they use more fuel? Maybe, I think they weigh a bit more. |

I don't think the Skoda is bad at all. Wheels look a little small, perhaps.  Turns out it's the Focus Saloon that's ugly and I got confused. The estate isn't too bad.

We bought a dog guard to pile stuff up to roof. About 300 mile range between fill ups. Not a turbo one. No leg room in rear. Body roll hilarious. Speed sensitive steering feels disconnected from road. |
