No, I was only joking, I know it's the clutch. The way the revs bolt up towards 3 with relatively little propulsion and that.

So, 1000 RPM difference between 70mph and 80mph in a Golf TDi?

Well granted I have the GT which is the 2 litre TDi and also has 6 gears but for me in 5th the difference is 400RPM, and in 6th 200 RPM.

Conclusion is I can't see how it is possible.

I am fairly certain that 1000rpm is NOT the difference between 70 and 80mph in my VAG TDi-engined car... in fourth or fifth.

I checked my dials last night on the drive home - there was approx 800rpm difference between 60 and 70 and between 70 and 80 - the needles on the speedo and the rev-o-meter moved up and down at the same rate.

Result = Kalmar is correct.

I'm not. I was giving empirical evidence to back up Kalmar's (and your) assertion that there has to be the same rpm difference and prove that Mali is, for once, being wrong. Seeing as he's being so boneheaded about it.

In fourth (1.9 TDi, 110bhp), 70mph is dead on 3,000rpm, 80mph is about 3,300rpm. Traffic too heavy to have time to check fifth.

As a former Sam Coupe owner, he'll take that on the chin. Then when it arrives bugged he'll take it on the chin. Then when the bug fixes are late he'll take that on the chin as well.

Frankly he'll be happy if he has something that half works after 6 months at which point the manufacturer will go bust.

Been reading about spigot bearings. Seems that not only do they exist (I was dubious) the diagnosis of it needing replacing was not only likely correct but timely - mine's probably progressed to disintegration now, given the increasing difficulty of selecting 2nd and particularly 3rd. So that's clutch, spigot bearing and guibo. Plus alleged leaking of geabox and diff.

I won't have to pay more than £50 for that, right?

Chaps! I managed to get a stone lodged into the passenger side front brake calliper today as I was leaving work's car park. Sadly I was half way down the road before I noticed the awful screeching coming from the wheel. When I gently reversed the car into a layby, the stone got dislodged and everything seems fine, though it's definitely scored the brake disc.

The 5-day old brake disc, I should mention. >:(
(Had my MOT last Friday and had to have the front pads and discs replaced as part of it).

Will this scoring on the disc be a problem?

The spigot bearing going can cause the same thing apparently.

My dad's recommended a transmission specialist, I'll take it there.

I wouldn't worry too much about the brake disc scoring Zio, at 5 days old you're still bedding the disc in anyway. Couple of months and it'll probably disappear, unless it was a diamond.

Anyway, brake discs are dirt cheap and easy to change (apparently).

I've had it in the focus twice, too (a stone lodge in a brake that is). It's annoying, but wasn't really that problematic.

Although, i suppose it depends on how deep the scoring is. I'd not be too inclined to worry, myself.

My experience of 911s or Ferraris is that they're usually driven quite conservatively on the motorway - it's usually diesel vans or dicks in Audis and BMWs who drive like they've recently been granted immortality. Don't know why this is though the cynic in me thinks that the motorway police would be more likely to nick you for doing 85mph in a Ferrari than in a saloon which could drive equally fast. Anecdotal evidence I know, but I have a friend who owned a F430 spider for six months and he reckoned he got pulled twice in six months in that for the most spurious reasons and not once in the three years prior he ran a 997.
