But what if that one time is the only time I ever need to change a tyre? I think Mimi makes an excellent point and I agree with her entirely, and wish her to lead the Brexit negotiations from this point forward.

Well, true, but that’s also quite unusual. It’s only happened to me once.

To be fair, your unusual experience is better than mine - in my case, the twat at the garage (National Autocentres) didn't torque the nuts up enough...

You can guess how that ended up.

Oh right does it sit lower on the spare then? There is a little dip on the entrance to our back lane, the Type-R caught its flappy bits on it if I didn't get the angle right.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll be careful of that!

She was told it doesn't actually fit, presumably for caliper reasons. Yet there it is in your photo! I guess it could be heat rather then clearance. Or the dealer was talking shit, but that seems an odd thing to do. Maybe they rectified it?

Just got home, started making my tea, put on a YouTube video, got an advert for blackcircles.com

I haven't browsed for anything tyre related, no emails tyre related, nothing YouTube tyre related, must have come from WhatsApp and Facebook and cross tracking cookies or something.

It's all a bit spooky.

My childhood best friend's parents had a Merc very similar to that Hearthly. It was a big old thing but comfy in the back seats. The thing I remember most though was that it had it had nets on the back of the seats to use as pockets. Young me had never seen that before - at that point in life my parent had fairly crappy cars.

Driving on a spare is surprisingly horrible. (I've never driven on a spare before.) I didn't go over 50mph and was super careful and gentle with acceleration and braking and cornering, but even so, wow, fucking awful.

Normally I quite enjoy the drive to work, but not today. Didn't help that it was very cold and wet up over the mountain as well.

I hope I don't get a flat in the i30, it uses Pirelli P Zero tyres (or something like that) and no bugger will have those in stock on the island.

It's almost like they're just there for use in an emergency and aren't really supposed to be driven on unless absolutely necessary ;)

You know you don't have to use a particular brand of tyres, right? You should be able to pick up two mid-range tyres for around the same price as one PZero (although 19" wheels might put paid to that idea)

Oh yes I get that it's an emergency type measure, but I was still surprised by how truly awful it made the car to drive. Fortunately the lady from the tyre place has been in touch and she'll be able to get the new tyre on the car today, plus as I'm in work today that's less distance for her to travel (Douglas is about equidistant from Ramsey and Port St Mary).

As for the P Zeros, it's possible that the i30-N community will settle on a tyre that works better on the car than the ones Hyundai use, that was the case on the Type-R, for example. (I can't remember exactly what the consensus was, but it wasn't the tyres that Honda put on there.)

I won't be skimping on tyres though, do remember I'll be trying to get it up to the 155mph limiter over TT, and seeing how much I can get it hurtling through the corners, using midrange tyres in that sort of scenario really doesn't make sense.

NOTE - When I do those runs it'll be early in the morning or late in the evening, when the road is one way, and there are no other vehicles/motorbikes up there. If I encounter any traffic I don't drive at those sorts of speeds.

Mine is just a Cricut and the accompanying free software. It uses a standard 45° plotter blade and it’s what I use for all of my paper and vinyl cuts and all the sweatshirts, etc that I make for Darwin. Mine is an old Original Cricut explore, specifically. Folds up to about the size of a bread bin, which is important as I don’t have much space. I’ll pop a few pics in the ‘things I’ve made’ thread so you can see the kind of things it can do.

Turns out I wont as the forum won't let me attach pictures today. It also thinks it is your birthday, @Zardoz Is it? For some reason I thought you were born in December. If that's right: HAPPY BIRTHDAY. You should buy yourself a plotter for your birthday :D

On account of their hairstyles?

I thought it was a bit later in December than Joans’s, closer to Christmas.

Silhouette Portrait is mine. Surprisingly handy. I've made dustbin stickers for ma, a doorbell plate with the number on and bike decals etc. Never thought I'd use it outside of PC modding but they're amazingly handy!

Gah! Having done some further research into the specs of the Fastback (because of course the perfect time to do this is after you've bought it), it doesn't have TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System).

The hatchback i30-N gets TPMS in both Standard and Performance spec, whereas the Fastback, which ONLY comes in Performance spec, drops the TPMS for no apparent reason whatsoever.

I queried this with Hyundai who in fairness did respond within about four hours, and they confirmed it wasn't a mistake on the website, the i30-N Fastback doesn't get TPMS.

Why the hell would they remove such a useful feature from the Fastback? That makes no sense to me at all.

That's a nice little feature that I'll miss.

Wow, imagine spending £27k on a car and it doesn’t have that thing.

I feel better spending £4.5k on my car that also doesn’t have that thing.

I appreciate it's not super accurate, but it is handy.

For example when I got that puncture the other day, the tyre monitoring alerted me to it when I was close to home, I wouldn't have noticed otherwise because the car drove the last half mile to home fine, without that I wouldn't have noticed until the next morning when I left for work, at which point it would have been a pain in the arse to put alternative arrangements in place.

As it was it bonged at me, I checked the tyre when I got home, saw the puncture, and arranged to borrow one of my in-laws' cars the next day for work.

(I do actually have a proper gauge, and a compressor, in the car.)

It is rather strange.

Heated Steering Wheel - Yes
Tyre Pressure Monitoring System - No

I have replied to the lady from Hyundai and asked why they took TPMS off the Fastback. Clearly it makes precisely fuck all difference to anything now whatever the answer is, since I've already bought the car, but I'd like to understand their thinking.

The Fastback has a slightly higher list price than the hatchback too. (£29,995 OTR for the Fastback, compared to £29,495 for the hatchback.)

I will get some of those swizzy little gizmos that Grim... linked to, they look like they should do the job, albeit in a less techno-exciting fashion.

Heated steering wheels are amazing and (apart from the lower running costs) is the one thing I *really* miss from the Nissan LEAF.

Most BMWs have heated steering wheels available as an option, and on the options table it's one of the cheapest options available but no-one ever takes it. People are idiots.

Yeah, being the middle spec mine doesn't have one but I think they sound like a great idea. My hands are always the last thing to feel warmed up after getting in the car on a cold day (even though the heater in the Leaf is miles better than any petrol car I ever had), always trying to point the blowers at them.

Can you put me down for 3 months before the car is changed.

Now I want to know what happens more often - AE changes cars or a girlfriend of Kov's changes men.

Going to be a close call.

I'm not entirely convinced Hyundai have got the specs of the Fastback correct on their site.

Two things that they definitely seem to have got wrong.

In these images, from left to right, the columns of ticks are:

Base i-30 N Hatchback - Perfomance i-30 N Hatchback - Perfomance i-30 N Fastback

(Note, the Fastback only comes in Performance spec)

Note that the hatchback has 'Rear Windscreen - Heated with Washer' in both specs, and for the Fastback, there's no mention of a heated rear windscreen or a washer.

And yet, what's this? A Fastback with a button for a heated rear window. (I've had a look through Autotrader, all the Fastbacks have this button.) It doesn't have the wiper, that's true, but if that isn't a button for a heated rear windscreen, I don't know what is.

Next example, the hatchback is listed as having 'Rear Seats - Split Folding (60/40)'. There is no mention of this for the Fastback.

And yet, here we have an interior shot of a Fastback that clearly has split folding 60/40 rear seats. (Again, they all have this.)

There is NO REASON ON EARTH for Hyundai to remove TPMS from the Fastback, I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that the Fastback has TPMS.
