I would say so, yeah. Or keeping the ST is an option—HAHAHAHA I tried

Yep, exactly that, and look at how much it would cost you to get a bank loan as an alternative to the manufacturers finance as that can sometimes be cheaper - It's what I did when I bought my Mini

I don’t understand why you want to sink £20k into a massively depreciating Korean hatchback in the first place, though.

I could think of a hundred better things to buy with the money.

Not really. Battery technology hasn't changed massively for ages now and with so much sunk costs that have been put into producing more Li-Ion it's likely that they'll still be broadly similar for a decade. An original Model S isn't obsolete and nor is a Nissan Leaf and residual values are proving to be strong.

A car that does 60 miles to a charge isn’t really viable in my eyes, which is pretty much what the first Leaf does. EVs can do almost 200 miles now which makes them obsolete to me.

Well by all accounts they've built a better car than the competition, and for less money too.

I appreciate it'll probably depreciate like a motherfucker, or on the other hand I could be one of the first to latch onto a spicy new zeitgeist and it'll be worth loads more money in a few years, like those classic Ferraris.

I'm not sure what else I'd want to buy, I only really do tech and cars, and I have all the tech I want. Most of my clothes are hand-me-downs from my brother, to give you an idea of how much of a fuck I give about most things. He throws away far nicer stuff than I'd ever actually buy. (I did very well out of the grunge period, because I was already a scruffy cunt when it all kicked off, so I was like, mega genuine grunge.)

I hate travelling with a passion, left to my own devices I'd never leave the Isle of Man again. If I want to see the pyramids I can look at pictures of them.

What else is there? I eat Tesco chicken nuggets with potatoes or Super Noodles for my tea four or five times a week, so I'm not much of a gourmand.

Oh and beer, I like beer, but that's quite cheap.

Well assuming that you wouldn't be dim enough to buy something totally unsuited to your needs then an EV you buy now isn't going to be obsolete in 3 years and in 5 or 10 it'll probably be worth more than an ICE car you bought now. So I'd go towards leasing if I was considering an ICE car rather than an EV because if anything is heading for obsolescence and dwindling resale values it's certainly not EVs.

Also EVs don't really go further now because of any advance in technology. Batteries have just got cheaper so they put bigger ones in. Lots of current and planned EVs still have smaller ranges because they're cheaper and fine for lots of use cases.

So thanks to the vigilance of the BEEX collective the leasing arrangement did not go ahead. I still want an i30-N but things have evolved a bit and I've decided I want the Fastback version of it, which I think looks a bit nicer and Hyundai made a few tweaks to from the hatchback.

Pre-reg examples seem to be available for £27K. A dealer here has one in stock and ready to go but they've got it up at £30.6K (!?!?!?). They've also got an ex-demonstrator hatchback i30-N but that's up at £30K (!?!?!?!).

I went up there yesterday and the guy kept telling me it was new even though it has 1700 miles on it and is an ex-demonstrator.

I'm starting to think I might just make a long weekend out of it and go to the UK and get one myself. A mate of mine did that earlier in the year when he got his M140i and saved about £2500 on what a local dealer said he could source one for.

The place I got the ST from is trying to get hold of an i30-N but is having trouble sourcing one, he's usually very reasonable on prices so I'd hope for a decent deal off him, and it'd save me the faff of getting one from the UK, since I generally like to just stay on the IOM and avoid the UK at all costs if I possibly can. (That's not an anti-UK thing, but an anti-everywhere that isn't the IOM thing.)

I wouldn't mind paying a grand on top of UK prices if that gets the car over here, registered and on IOM plates.

True, once he discovers the i-30 is too much to handle for the road for non professional drivers he'll change it. Which is fine, it isn't for everyone

I think the length of vac hose I replaced my 'new' silicon line with has done the trick and nipped the overboost problem in the bud.

The silicon stuff is a lot softer than the braided rubber so was maybe collapsing or kinking (especially with the engine recently being driven unmounted properly!) where this is much stiffer :hat:

Keep your ST and get it over to Blackpool for a stage 4 makeover.

Deposit paid, car should be here in a week. It's an ex-demonstrator i30-N Fastback with 2000 miles on it, registered Jan 2019. £26K delivered to me on the island and taxed.

It'll be in this colour as well, so this is basically what it looks like.

I'm getting £10K for the ST which is reasonable, and the price on the i30 is very good.

Wow, so the ST depreciated £5k in under 12 months. That's like a third of its value.

You Won't Believe This One Weird Trick To Buying A Car. Finance Companies Love Him!

//edit: It's now been nearly 10 months since I swapped my BMW 5-GT for my Toyota Yaris Hybrid. I'm about to hit the "have done 15,000 miles in it" marker and so far:

- Nothing has gone wrong with it. At all. Not even a stray warning light.
- I've been averaging between 52 and 65mpg per tank, depending on the weather (the lower end during the coldest stretches of weather when I had to have the heaters on full and the heated seat mats on)
- I missed my scheduled service by just over 4,000 miles* but have been told this won't affect the remaining manufacturer warranty (1 year)
- It's surprisingly pleasant to drive, reasonably nippy and quite go-kart like around corners

Only negatives?

- The most recent service cost me £295, which is stupid money for what is essentially a fluids and filters service, with inspection of the rest of the car too.

And that's it.

I've started to find myself getting a little bit tempted to look at AutoTrader and look up various EVs and M135is and the like, but this apparent new-fangled sensible me keeps looking back at the "65mpg" bit on the spreadsheet and deciding that it just isn't worth the change.

* So used to the condition based servicing on the BMWs I've had that basically tell me when to get the car serviced, I didn't think to check the service schedules (every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first)

No finance involved. It's the ST + cold hard cash.

I mentioned earlier in this thread that my granddad died last year and left his house to my dad and his two brothers, they sold the house and split the money three ways, and my dad split his share between me and my brother.

We got the cash a couple of months ago and I think I've very done well hanging on this long before spunking a substantial portion of it on a new car.

I could have just paid £16K off the mortgage which of course is the far more sensible thing to do (I even checked at the bank that we could overpay as much as we want without penalty), but that's so fucking boring! And we'd still have a mortgage to pay off. Talk about futile.

How much did you pay for the ST and when did you buy it?

This was a straight swap, he gave me £15K for the Leon

Wow, so the ST depreciated £5k in under 12 months. That's like a third of its value.

It'll be back on a forecourt next week for £13k

I'm guessing £11.5K, maybe £12K tops. Facebook will probably try to punt my own car back at me, that's what it usually does :)

Don't forget to factor in the 50p you had to pay to all those people, though.

I'm not sure really, this will be the newest and most expensive car I've ever had, and since there's no finance involved, it'll be nice to just own the car outright. I don't know if that'll change the psychology of it all insofar as it's 'mine' right from the off and I'll feel more inclined to keep it, plus the depreciation probably isn't going to be pretty.

(The Type-R ran it pretty close at £25K, but a chunk of that was on finance, but that's paid off now thanks to the money I got.)

I guess it comes down to how good of a car the i-30 is, if it's as good as everyone seems to say it is, maybe I'll keep it for the full five year warranty!
