Insurance renewal insanity.

Just had my renewal quote. Last year I paid £383.90.

Renewal quote was £473.22

I did a price comparison and got a quote for a NEW policy with the SAME insurer for £338.24, so I called them up to query it and on the phone they’ve given me a renewal at £212.52, i.e. £260.70 less than the original renewal quote and £171.38 less than I paid last year.

Russell has had a similar experience. I guess they must make enough extra from the people renewing without questioning it to make the initial quote worth listing?

Absolutely, but to end up paying over £170 less than last year ....... amazeballs.

It just feels like random pricing sometimes. My son, who lives with us and is in his late 30s had a renewal quote that was over £100 more than last year and he couldn’t get a significantly cheaper quote via any comparison site. Must be a bastard algorithm somewhere that defies discernible logic.

Insurance tax went up I think.

Eeesh. I hate when you get to this point in a car's life. It will categorically cost you more to buy a new car, and if the above is all you have to spend for the next couple of years then that's value. It's the not knowing that hurts.

She's priceless.

I'm going ahead with the work as I know the engine and bodywork are sound, it's economical to run and I'd only put a full new exhaust on it last year, I'll get my moneys worth back out of her.

New clutch and flywheel means she'll be good to remap too now, so there's that.

Did the mr muscle sticky turbo vane clean, swapped the last vacuum line to the actuator (all sexy purple now) and also gave the actuator lever a good clean and WD40.

Car feels great now. Hopefully cured the limp mode trouble doing that.

New clutch feels good too.

My sister has bought a C63 AMG. 6.3 l V8. Well then.

What year?

(2006-2010 cars with that engine have the notorious 'head bolt' issue. If it's not been done it's about £2000 to get them replaced with ones that don't risk destroying the engine.)

It's hard to get exact stats on the failure rate, anecdotally it seems to be about 10-20%. The problem is when it happens, it destroys the engine which effectively writes off the car.

MB also revised the head bolt design from mid-2010 onwards so clearly they knew something was amiss, but they never did a recall and never admitted any liability when they go pop.

MB put the engine in a lot of cars at the time, there's the legendary tale of the guy in the States who bought a used R63 and had a head bolt fail. The MB dealer wanted $57,000 to replace the engine. The chap went ahead and fixed it himself, but it took him months and still cost thousands of dollars.

You can roll the dice, or spend about £2000 getting it done preemptively by having the bolts replaced.

Merc failed MOT. £1200 to fix. Scrapping it!
