I felt nervous in the Honda Jazz I had recently... it didn't feel very stable and I was afraid it was going to topple over or lose grip constantly.

I have decided to get rid of my car as it's costing me a fucking fortune every month. Having driven the wife's for the last 3 weeks and noticed that I only have to fill it up once every 3 weeks rather than once a week the precise nature of my folly has become apparent.

Choices now are - take the hit on on the scandalous BMW finance settlement figure and just buy a second hand motor for a couple of grand outright or trade my lease in for a another BMW but one that's more "sensible" and reduce my monthly payments and petrol bill.

I know fuck all about maintenance of cars so what are the odds of me finding something fairly tazzy for a couple of grand that doesn't need a load of work carrying out every five minutes?

The odds are in your favour I'd say Trousers. You want to have a butchers in the Autotrader.

Get yourself an early Mondeo Ghia X, Trousers. They may not be the most exciting of cars but the Ghia X trim level is great and they're pretty reliable as Fords go. Can be had dirt cheap too.

I'm getting rid of my car completely due to cost issues. I reckon I'll be able to save about £350 a month from not running it.

Anything early-to-mid 90s from Japan will be completely bomb-proof, have a small-ish engine, weigh fuck all, and cheap.

Like anything else from the early-to-mid 90s, though, you may as well drive around with a psychopath in the passenger seat and a bomb in the boot, because anything more than a robust tap and you'll be maimed to death (like me in my '97 3-series! Hooray!).

I want something that goes relatively zippy though as I've got used to a sub 6s 0-60. I'd love a Skyline (wouldn't mind springing more for that obv) for instance but I bet it needs love and attention that I can't give it.

To explain if I clear the finance I don't mind spending the money on fuel as I'll be saving a shitload on repayments. If I'm still having to pay finance then I want a diesel/1 litre car to offset the finance payments.

Judging from your first statement, you don't want to be looking at Skylines.

Unless you go for the 1.2 model.

That's what I mean - if they need new parts and shit every 10 minutes then count me out but if they are solid as fuck and a local garage will look after me I don't mind slinging £2000 a year at it in petrol and the odd tyre if I've already paid for it.

(HEY HEY While I remember while checking my finance documents I got the exact figure for my tyre insurance - £127. Bear in mind one tyre costs just shy of £200 that's some fucking mental insurance that is when I've had two already.)

Get a 1.8l Celica T-sport! They're under 8K now, they're relatively zippy (0-60 in 7s) and they return good mpg too - 30 to 34 depending on driving style.

Plus they look cool ;)

That's the problem with sports/racing type motors they're tuned to a hairs bredth away from a garage.

Get yourself down to the garages and try stuff out like Seat (Cupra Range) Honda (Type R range) Celicas etc. If you want something solid with a little oomph.

I think zardoz was referring more to the fuel consumption that goes with any bigly turbocharged engine.

A VAG 1.8T is quite a good mid-point regarding fuel:performance, my Octavia vRS* still returns 35mpg. I don't think a Leon Cupra R would be quite as good, with the 225ps engine. They're not exactly as reliable as you might think, though. My Octy had 6 warranty items in 18 months, and it's been crying out for a good turbo diagnosis/fettle for a year;it used to return 40+ mpg, which I'd be annoyed at but as my girlfriend's daily drive it's up to her how and when she pays for things. It needs the cambelt doing in November, too - 4 years/45k miles, and the waterpump needs doing at the same time.

* A reasonable 52 plate should be approaching 4k by now.

Really, we are tempted to get rid of one/both our cars and get something more economical. Despite that, I still really want the new RS (if it turns out to be good).

I like the style of the Punto, and the 500 too, but I've only ever heard bad things about fiats and that really puts me off.

If you said "I've driven it and don't like it's amazingly direct handling and performance that will shame much more powerful cars" is one thing but saying you don't like it because it's popular with estate agents or a trash pop star rhymed it with super duper is truly cretinous.

What the fuck did you buy? Last time I spoke with you about it you were toying with the idea of a diesel accord, not an autobahn stormer?

Anyway, there are a metric fuckton of cars you can buy that will be fun and cost very little.

If it was a Cooper S then I'd suggest the tracking or tyre pressures were out if you thought it was nothing special. Sure, they're not much fun around town, particularly if the car you drove has been specced up with huge wheels, which are always about show at the expense of handling integrity.

You own a previous gen Civic S, or is it current?

Oh, don't get me wrong, it was a fairly quick car and handled really well. I just really don't like the styling of it.

My car is a boat in comparison and I don't particularly like it, hence I'm getting rid. :)

Also, there's fuck-all boot space and room in the back seats. It's like having a Mini Coupe rather than a hatchback. Plus they're expensive for what they are.

OK here's the deal - current monthly car cost including repayments, fuel, insurance and rfl - £800

If car goes then £500+ ish of that monthly figure also goes so I don't mind if the replacement costs me £250 a month in petrol as my net cost will still be £450 a month cheaper (Providing I have bought outright) BUT I don't want a car that needs me to know anything about it AT ALL.

I can probably stretch to about £5k to pay outright so does that give anyone any decent ideas?

Skoda Fabia? You aren't allowed to know much about it, the large plastic cover over most of the engine is to stop you fiddling, and it's unlikely anything will go wrong to require you fiddling anyway.

It's not it's "image" it's what it actually looks like, I find them fucking hideous and I hate the whole retro thing with cars. Or are we not allowed to even care what cars look like? Also if I was buying a car specifically to be fun to drive it certainly wouldn't be a front wheel drive supermini, because I don't find them all that entertaining, fast but just not all that fun. As for the Madonna thing, I wasn't actually being entirely serious.

You could get a 98/99 540 Beemer for that. 286bhp. Nuff said.
Or a Jaguar XJR (370bhp) of similar vintage if you haggle.
Or, you could go for a 2003 Focus ST, or Mondeo ST220 for about that price. I trust you're not looking to a 2 seater due to the bairns?

I'll let one of the children in here bring up rice rocket and hot hatch recommendations as that market is enormous but few of them will have the grunt you're used to.

DBSnappa has just regaled me with this retrospective review of the MkII Astra GTE. Memories! I had one of these, albeit in the lower spec 8v form. I particularly enjoyed:
Quote:
pushing the accelerator causes the nose to scrub out wide, but lift off for a second and this turns into oversteer without warning.
I can certainly confirm that mine almost went into a ditch on more than one occasion from lift-off oversteer.

I've been in my FWD Octavia vRS all week because my M3 popped its radiator last Friday*, with the MOT already booked for yesterday, which it failed on rear suspension bushes and bearings. I'm not ashamed to say that I've been driving like a cock** and loving it, including sticking my foot to the floor in corners, causing enough understeer and traction control upset that I've had to back out. Not a twitch of snap oversteer. Quite disappointing, really.

* The internet says "the radiator will go by around 100k miles", mine went at 103000. The garage is slowly learning that when I say "I saw on the internet that..." I should generally not be laughed off as quickly as they normally would.
** Which is to say, accelerating harder, braking later and cornering quicker than I normally would. Generally legal and courteous, always safe. But there's something about a turbocharged small engine that encourages abuse more than a big NA. Possibly to do with the lack of wild power oversteer, but mostly the low-rev torque surge.

Got any pics of your M3, Bik? Don't really see many of them about around here, and on my journey to Wrexham yesterday I was buzzed by a guy in an M3 that seemed to be going impossibly fast. Almost literally a "blink and you'll miss him" moment.

I went up to Motoscope in Northallerton today to pick up my romper suit, gloves, booties, harness and fire extinguisher. I already got a Sparco Pro Jet open face helmet a couple of weeks ago, and a spare set of wheels and tires

I am booked in for a half day (three 20 minute sessions) track day at Croft circuit on the 11th (I expect the weather will be like http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rFFsHFdBnto, and I am also now booked in for a sprint event at Barkston Heath airfield on the 2nd November. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=sN54Q3eWjPw

If I'm really jammy, I may even get a sneaky reserve entry for the Toyota Sprint Series night time round at Teesside on the 25th.

Then over chrimbo I get to figure out which motor club to join, and then next year it will hopefully be lots of TSS sprints and MSA and other sprints and hillclimbs. I live less than 10 miles from Harewood hillclimb, so it would be rude not to.

Well I thought it was going to be "my friend the policeman told me he snapped an MR2 going 95 on the A1 today"

Oh. Yes, I'm doing all this stuff in my MR2. Actually, I think even if it explodes by the next MOT I will do the same with whatever car I get. All the stuff I am looking at is for totally standard road cars, I just never felt like doing it in the little Punto.
