Can you not hire a car. Then you can get a different one every week.

Or take taxis. Then you can get a different car each day *and* a chauffeur!

Fucking hell, Hearthley. Why not get your next next car now and give yourself a couple months break?

Last door seal done yesterday so hopefully now the kids won't be paddling in the back.

POWERFLEXTM front strut bushes ordered. Old ones seem shot at judging by the different heights of the caps.

Took a Touraeg out for a test drive today. It's a nice 2011 example with the 245bhp 3 litre turbo diesel engine and 8-speed (!) auto, 46000 miles on the clock with a reasonable asking price of £17K.

Have to say I didn't really like it though, it was easy enough to drive and didn't feel stupidly big or ungainly, and once out on the open road it had a reasonable turn of speed and handled surprisingly well for such a big car (but still not great) - but even after just a few miles I found myself thinking 'I actually prefer the Leon to this'. (It's worth remembering that my Leon has the same engine that VW put in the Golf GTD, and it's kind of the same car overall as well, and VW pitch the GTD as a sporty car.)

Plus the tech wasn't quite up to scratch, obviously there's no Android Auto in a 6 year old car but it did have a reasonable touchscreen, however it was missing SD card slots and USB connectivity (opting instead for iPod and AUX connectors in the glovebox).

Oh yes and it reminded me that I don't like auto boxes, the DSG with paddles in the S4 was alright, but even there I think I'd have preferred a manual box. (On balance I think I'd like my next S4 to be the 6-speed manual.)

So in the end I didn't really see the point and it was a no sale scenario, but I chatted with the salesman for a while who's a nice chap (I've bought cars off him in the past, and I work with his brother) and mentioned I was after a B8.5 S4 or 'similar' car, which he said he'd keep in mind when they're choosing what to get in stock.

Overall then, big 4x4 isn't for me.

My dad's Touareg has an SD slot. It's in the central storage console somewhere.

The 6l W12 is a fucking riot.

I had a good poke around and couldn't find an SD card slot, although the one I looked at is the 'SE' model (which means Standard Equipment or just a nice way of saying 'base model', albeit a very nicely equipped base model with sat nav, front a rear sensors, auto-dimming mirror and suchlike). Maybe other models got SD/USB?

A mate at work has the earlier Touareg with the 5L W10 diesel in it, which is quite a crazy thing.

The SD/USB wasn't the main thing though, I've still got an old iPod I could bring out of retirement and just use that, it was driving it that I didn't find particularly enjoyable.

Also Touareg is a stupid name for a car and I keep spelling it wrong.

Probably your judicious use of ice mode during the winter that did it.

Yeah, but you only drove it for a relatively short time. After a week you might like it, you should probably buy it just to be on the safe side ;)

Pretty much, yes.
The VAG W12 is effectively two VR6 engines (or VR5s for a W10) sharing a common crankshaft.

Definitely looks like I won't be getting one of the newer AWD e63 AMG estates for a while, the cheapest second hand on autotrader is 80k!

I don't think the improved fuel economy from the small engine would ever make that 55k back.

Car failed MOT on track rod end ball covers. Not too bad. Getting new track rod ends fitted rather than just the covers and my front strut top mount POWERFLEX!!! bushes fitted next Saturday too.

Be nice to have my front suspension at the same height. :)

PSVR slipping further away from me...

This is the highest mileage I've had in a car I've owned. Think I bought it with 78k on the clock.

We're looking at buying a new car after my wife's accident. We haven't heard back whether the old car will be a write off yet but I imagine it will.

Anyway, we've seen this one...

Normally I'd take my dad to look at it and ask all the relevant questions but he's not well so I'm asking you lot. What do you reckon? What should I be looking out for?

Does it? Is that because it's a 7 seater? Apparently they're not that common.

Check all tyes match. Ask why if they don't.
Check for spare wheel and toolkit.
Push each corner down and see if it bounces back normally.
On start up, and when running, look for non normal exhaust colors. Blue is bad.
Look under coolant cap, it should not look yucky.
Turn steering lock to lock and listen for crunching noises. There should not be any.
You will want all keys.
Bounce engine of rev limiter a couple of times when warm and listen for rattles.
Emergency stop it a few times with a light grip on steering wheel to see if it pulls left or right.
Accelerate hard a few times to see if it pulls ok. If it feels like an auto box looking for a geat, clutch is going.
Check big service interval times and costs like timing belts.
Run fingers undr wheel arches to look for rust.
Check previous mot for advisories.

Try to gently wobble the exhaust with your foot, too.
