I think for reasons above, it's less of a risk than a 100 mile skoda over 4 years. After 4 years a ten year old Skoda is worth £1.5k and if the dacia lasts 4 years then the difference is marginal.

But the Skoda will be a much nicer place to live in for those four years, and more reliable.


It's always a gamble buying a car because you could end up with a bag of nails, but I'm leaning toward an engine that's done 17k miles over one that's done 100 miles when it comes to the need to replace bits.

Also, for the record, don't be put off by 100k miles. If it has a full service history and receipts it'll be fine. And something that's done 20k miles a year will almost certainly have spent a considerable chunk of it's time under stressed on the motorway.

It's electrical shit on cars that tends to fail more often so buying a cheap as chips car loaded to the gunwales with electronic tat, is more likely to have difficult and expensive to fix shit go wrong.

Myp. Whilst I appreciate your input, i've seen nothing so far to suggest it as terrible idea as you're suggesting. I've read about and having had a sit in and prod around the interiors are mostly matt plastic, but for the 7k miles a year, of which 5 are trips of less than 15 minutes, it doesn't matter for the shirt time that'll be spent in it and having 2 kids in the back. They certainly ate no worse inside than the ka. It'll last 4 years and then be thrown. There's nothing to suggest reliability to be an issue, they appear to score highly in surveys, either.

The only bad Dacias were the early UK spec Dusters which were built in India and had widespread corrosion problems. LHD ones for the rest of Europe were built in Romania alongside the Logan and had no such issues, and the RHD Dusters are now made there too.

Dacias have been quite popular over here as one of the local dealers added them to his franchise list.

They wouldn't be my cup of tea but I can definitely understand their appeal, and the people I know who've got them swear by them as being solid cars for a very reasonable price. (A colleague bought a brand new Duster for his weekend car, and put a bike rack on it, to take to all sorts of remote locations on the island, he says it's a fantastic vehicle for the money.)

The 4x4 ones actually have some 4x4 capability as well apparently.

Base specs are plain but it seems almost all have a few key upgrades and the ones with all the kit are quite nicely appointed.

If you just want a 'car' (as seems to be the case with Mali here), a sensible choice IMO.

Never had any contact with them myself, but it couldn't possibly be any more spartan than the interior of my brother's C2. The exterior just continues inside, ffs!

OK it's a very nice, restored example - but still..... that's just crazy money for a 205 hatch, considering the vast numbers that were made and still relatively large numbers remaining, and hot on the heels of nearly £100,000 for a Ford Sierra RS a month or two back. These 80s classics are obviously making a serious comeback; perhaps people are beginning to realise they are so much more rewarding and fun to drive than today's fat, bloated equivalents, weighed down with all such safety bobbins. Someone has shunned a much quicker, brand spanking new VW Golf GTI for this 30-odd year old little hatch.

Wish I'd kept my XR2i at this rate lol.

Big difference between a 205 and 206GTI though mate?
The 206 was pretty pants IIRC, because to be fair, it had to be. Those side impact bars etc. come at a terrible, terrible price in terms of driving dynamics and handling etc.

Btw, anyone ever tried lifting off the throttle in a 205GTI when on, or very close to the limit into a fast right hand corner...?
I have, and fuck me it scared the very shit out of me. Instead of the expected polite front-driver understeer nose-correction, the bloody thing oversteered wildly - and with no throttle control (no drive to the rear wheels), I must admit I just panicked and locked up anchors, whilst almost sideways. By pure luck, I got away with it.

These were wild, wild little cars, lairy as you chuffing-well-like, and very hard to drive genuinely fast point-to-point; people just don't realise nowadays. Imagine an Audi S3 doing that lol, someone would be getting sued! :D

Personally I can't see the 206, 307 etc. ever rising beyond "total junk" status; a woffer is a woffer afterall. They were just too heavy and unsorted back in their day, let alone now, and shit to drive.
I don't think prices are necessarily rising because people are nostalgic for the 80s, though that could be a dimension. I think it's more to do with how genuinely entertaining these classic all-time hot hatches were to drive - because they weighed 800kg, not 1200-1500kg, and can never again exist (as new cars) because of all the NCAP and enviro stuff?
