I was looking at the guitar hero 4 drum kit earlier comparing it the rock band one, and I believe it will be backward compatible but not as ideal as the guitar hero 4 one would be for their own game. If you look at the GH4 drums they have 3 drums which are in the same order as the RB one except a missing yellow one but the cymbal on the GH4 one has a little yellow mark on it in pretty much the same position but highed up and also a cymbal where the rock band one would be.

if that makes sense, if you have a look you'll see what i mean. and apparently the cymbals in GH4 are for star power rather than as a rhythm note so surely there would be no need to colour code them. I could be totally wrong but I think it would be a shot in the foot if both sets are inter-compatible.

As Activision took deliberate steps to cripple compatability as far as possible with respect to the guitar controllers, I think you are wrong. They will ensure the controllers don't work across the games.

I've heard an interesting thing about GH4 that makes it so it won't matter what tracks are on it.

Can I hazard some guesses?

Singstore-esque marketplace where you pay per song.
Custom playlist for any song ripped to 360 hard drive.
It's so awful you won't want to play it no matter what songs it comes with.

Am I right?

Would it be possible to actually generate the 'note pattern' for something put on your playlist, though? Also, Singstore is hardly comprehensive as far as musical taste is concerned, so I wouldn't say that it doesn't matter what songs are available if that were the case (though the singstore choice IS improving... When you're alone and life is making you lonely you can always go... Downtown. Alright, stop - Hammertime! Is there life on Maaaaarrrrrsssssss?)

na thats the guitar hero based on aerosmith not the 4th one, comes out in june, Ill probably rent it, actually I thought song and dance or whatever it was called was pretty fun to play.

Nirejhenge-you on about the make your own tracks thing? I wonder how that will work no vocals on it aswell. I wouldnt mind making some shoegaze with a total of about 4 notes in 10 minutes.

This is my guess too. And yeah, the drums have an extra pad, and you can write your own music somehow. None of this changes the fact that Neversoft are hacks, Activision are arseholes, and Harmonix practically invented modern rhythm games. I don't think I will get GH4 despite owning 1, 2, and 3.

Mimi wrote:

Yes, there are games that do this, including the iPod game that Harmonix have put out, and two of Harmonix's old PS1 games (Frequency springs to mind). It's unlikely to do as good a job as a human though.

It's all top secret information about Gh4 anyway so I can't say anything else as I might get the person in trouble who told me.

Oh really? This, plus being able to use my GH3 guitar, means that I might actually be able to get Rock Band after all.

Bah! Rumbled!

Nah, actually, my wife and I have long dreamed of a game that combined Singstar and Guitar Hero, so I could play the guitar while she did the vocals. But we're skint. So if we can just trade in some old games for Rock Band and use existing kit to play it, we win!

You can also get any old USB mic, apparantly, which are available from various online computer gubbins emporiums for a tenner or something. I dunno how well the headset works, but pertinent questions on the (excellent and very busy) Rock Band official forums will illuminate you.

:this:

Compare playing Smoke On The Water from GH with playing Sunshine Of Your Love in GH3. Two equally famous, equally awesome riffs, but the first makes you feel like you're playing it, but the second makes you feel like you're pushing buttons on a controller.

I'm officially more excited by Rock Band than I've been for the release of any other game, ever. Even Watford have gotten into the spirit by crashing out of the playoffs and avoiding me having to spend two hours of launch weekend watching the final. Thanks, embarassingly terrible late-season form!

Yeah, this. I am aware of the work Konami have done, and indeed that Guitar Hero is essentially rewarmed Guitar Freaks, but to a Western audience I submit that no-one has done more to popularise rhythm games than Harmonix. Guitar Hero is a huge franchise and they are the reason why.

I really like Donkey Konga, for which I own four sets of bongos. It's great in four player mode but I've barely played it since getting Guitar Hero.

Have you tried Taiko no Tatsujin (think that's the correct spelling anyway)? I imported that for the PS2 a while back and that didn't grab me either. Guitars > Drums

I have it (and 2, which I got for free, thanks Nintendo stars) along with 3 sets of bongos.

I don't really like it that much, but everyone else I know loved playing it, despite the fact that I would always wipe the floor with them.

The main reason I didn't like it: I don't like being told what to play.

Then I bagsy doing percussion on M.I.A's rather spiffy 'Paper Planes'.

:)

I actually played Singstar at my friend's house last weekend. It was really good fun, though I found that it wouldn't register my lovely voice very well when singing normally, but if I started singing falsetto it said I nailed pretty much every note, which is weird as it felt like I was all over the place (and I'm sure it sounded horrible).

The cost per song download is pretty high though.

Guitar Hero is alright, but I wish Harmonix would get their arses in gear and produce a new game in their Frequency/Amplitude line.

I've noticed that my order for the instruments with play.com has changed from 'preordered' to 'order placed' and that the instruments are now showing as in stock and dispatched in 24 hours. The game still says pre-ordered for the 23rd, though.

Does anyone not want the drums? That's all I'm really interested in. If I can use the Guitar Hero controller with it then I can just get Guitar Hero. I don't know anyone who can sing or would want to so the mic isn't needed. Obviously i'm offering money for them.

Really? If that were the case it would probably be cheaper to pick up a GH3 guitar and a USb mic, I think. You can buy the drums alone, by the way, but I think they still amount to being quite expensive.

I just know how difficult I'd find the drumming (haven't looked properly at it but I assume it has a pedal as well as the drums?) so I'll pass on that and pick it up for the guitar stuff instead. The last thing I need is more gaming accessories taking up space - I've three sets of maracas gathering dust as it is.

Yes. Four pads (which vary from song to song but are normally tomtom, snare, hihat and crash I think) and the pedal for the bass. I don't think the game introduces the pedal until a later difficulty level though.

I hopeful - sometimes stuff arrives a day early from them :)

The Bosstones are ace. Donkey Konga is bollocks.

I do wish somebody would beg me to play DK with them, so I could either refuse, or completely destroy them at ITIG while singing along.

How do you trigger the clap? I find clapping hurts and I react too slow for a fast song, so I click my fingers instead.
