Mostly a reflection on the greater amount of cricket that is played nowadays I would suggest.

As for the quota system thing, are they still daft enough to have that in operation? They have Ashwell Prince established now so it shouldn't really be impacting their team selection; they are picking Ntini because they think he is better than he is, not because he is black I think.

They must do, as they should've dropped him once Steyn came back into the side.

As I understand it, the system only ever said they had do have 1 non-white player in the team, hence them always picking Paul Adams back in the day even though he was shit. Once Ntini came along and was excellent for a long time the issue kind of went away, but I'm sure if it still is in place it only stipulates 1 non-white must be picked, and Prince covers that, so any selection of Ntini would still be a tactical blunder rather than a political one.

Amla's not white, either. Or doesn't he count because he's not black? This is all so confusing.

I've been using the phrase "non-white", because I think that is how they phrase it. Herschelle Gibbs counts as "non-white" from what I remember of past selection issues, and he certainly isn't black. So yes, Amla counts as well. This is probably the most racially balanced team the Saffers have ever put out actually.

We're not very ethnically balanced, but we have players from more different countries than anyone else!!!

I think the quota is more than one (four rings a bell from the old days -Amla is also 'Non white'), but there is also a reasoning to keep Ntini in so that their whole bowling line up is not white.

There is a differentiation between 'Of colour' and 'black'.

Benjani.

*ahem*

What's going on? Bell scores a century and England look like they're going to win!

This continues to prove the already established theory that Aston Villa and England always have diametrically opposed fortunes.

Put your money on Liverpool to turn us over at Villa Park tonight!

Lazy googling says 6 non-whites in the squad of 14, but that's an article that's over a year old.

It gets a brief mention on the Wikipedia page, and the citation leads to this BBC article. Seems they have more sense than we realised, and Riles' theory of them having to have one non-white bowler and one non-white slip fielder and one non-white opener and one non-white ballboy holds no water.

Also lazy googling said they scrapped it in 2002, but that is clearly bollocks, or a temporary measure, so I didn't post it.

Largely because this was written 5 years later

Looks like the 2002 step was a legal one, rather than an individual governing body decision

If they eat enough of mamma's good ol' home cooking they can get a job as NFL linemen.

Actually, joking aside I have always thought the NFL was the most racially fucked up sport around.

I've edited my last post for a 2007 story which says they were very much in force, on an unofficial level at least, then.

No confirmation on the story that they must field one non-white and one white wicketkeeper though.

Oh, and I read this last week too, which suggests colour alone is keeping him in the team

No, an English collapse is one that comes from a position of near safety, like in the first test.

Well worth getting up early for (although I did miss the first wicket because it took me too long to wake up properly!)

Winning by an innings! Who'd have thought it!

South Africa have turned into England!

They have a player inexplicably in their side even though he's way out of form, a great youngster carrying the drinks, a crap spinner who's in the side for his batting and a Domino Rally approach to batting!

Meanwhile England have a good spinner, a ruthless young quick bowling attack and batsmen who are prepared to dig in / be aggressive as required (sorry Ian Bell, you are the exception at the moment, although I will praise you when you do get it together. Please don't become Mark Ramprakash II).

So. 3-0 England? ;)

I'll accept a lot of the criticism Bell gets but you could never liken him to Mark Ramprakash. He's already far surpassed Ramprakash's "achievements" in international cricket. And can't dance as well.

I know. I jest and you guys are biters!

Bell has coincidentally played almost the same number of tests as Ramps played in his career.

Bell averages over 40 in test cricket, traditionally the measure of whether you were up to it. Ramps averaged 27. Bell needs to kick on and cement a place in the team. His main problem is he is considered the 6th batsman, but England aren't convinced they need 6!

Ian Bell got within sight of being top scorer, so immediately took aim and hit the ball directly to a fielder.

Agree or disagree:

Despite having stats that match up to pretty much anyone in terms of both batting and being an all-rounder, Jacques Kallis will not be remembered as greatly as people with worse stats because he's an annoying shit who plays for his numbers rather than for his team.

Disagree. I thought he was one of the most respected (and feared) players in the game.

Despite having stats that match up to pretty much anyone in terms of batting and captaincy, Graham Smith will only be remembered as a fat cunt, who was called as much by the umpires last autumn.

Disagree. I was of the opinion that Graeme Smith is a far more liked and respected batsman than Kallis. This ties into the last note. Smith went for it this morning and tried to up the pace, and ultimately got out trying to force things instead of patiently batting out his 200. Kallis retreated into his shell and scored at worse than .50 S/R as he was only interested in preserving his average, not in actually winning the Test match. It's an accusation he's had a lot of times during his career.

I mean, Kallis has a better batting average than the likes of Tendulkar, Lara, Ponting, Dravid... in fact pretty much anyone in the modern game. I bet if you asked most cricket commentators to name the best five batsmen of modern times he wouldn't feature as highly as any of those. I'm not saying he's shit, or anything, but strictly speaking he should be considered the greatest player of the modern era by a distance... and he isn't.
