On the upside, Mr Gnomes's fury has been replaced with a sweet tooth, which is rather well, sweet. Ya big toss! "Fudge off, sweet stain!"

Now all we need is for CG's sweet-related swearing to be 15 times larger than everyone else's.

Phew, all done now.
There's a custom profile option that asks if you want to see the naughty words or not. It's on for pretty much everybody - turn if off if you have filters that are easily offended.

Surely people with overactive swear filters won't be able to see this page now, anyway?

I for one welcome this new per-forumite targeting and alteration of content, and am excited about the potential for future (and present) evil using it as a vehicle, toward unwanted forumites. It's brilliant. It's like some kind of reverse-Stalinism, crossed with that one episode of WCW Nitro where Hulk Hogan keeps seeing the Ultimate Warrior in his mirror, but nobody else could, so they thought he had gone mad and the NWO almost split. Like that, but more worrying.

What is this? The cuddles club for the under 5's?

It should be off by default IMO. Otherwise we deserve the same kind of mockery that we throw at 3pm showings of Beverly Hills Cop.

If you need the swearing off, then people should be able to turn it off. But to have it on the entire time is patronising for the rest of us.

I concur that censorship should always be off by default, no matter what the circumstances for it existing or it being of benefit or not :)

What's your favourite sort of fuck?

I quite like rum'n'raisin fuck, but the king has to be Cadbury's shit, shit fuck bars. A finger of fuck is just enough to give your kids a treat, after all.

I hear that bastard Forsyth quite enjoys a finger of fuck too, and regularly gives his shit little tabby cunt some of it, even though the vet has told him that he shouldn't give his cunt any fuck. Shit food is bad for them.

Yes. Though, as I said, I'm rather wary about any other, different, future 'alterations' of this nature. One day it's per-individual swear filters to help get past over-sensitive work sensors. The next, it's... all kind of possible evil. How long before we start getting posts that only certain people can/can't see?

We've had that in place for ages. For example, your above post actually reads to everyone else as "Banjo, banjo, my thrubmiffin's on fire".

SA's best thing ever was "Hellbanning".

Basically the person posting never noticed anything had changed.

Except they were the only ones who could see their posts, to everyone else they didn't exist.

Excellent.

I wonder how long that person could go without realising they were being ignored by everyone. Just for safety I think I'll call Dudley a giant twat every time I post, just to be sure.

A few years ago, when a forum I run was merely a guestbook, I set it so that when a certain user tried to post, it automatically replaced his posting with a random quote from Henry V.

It was terribly amusing to see the thing filled up with Shakespeare.

Have you not forgotton about the mods forum and The Dead Zone? ;)

I don't think helping someone stay accessed to the site is going to result in heavier moderation all of a sudden, have you forgotton that other thingie that Grim... did where people could access via a different URL? It's hardly caused posts to be deleted.

I did something similar with another annoying guestbook spammer, except that everything he wrote was replaced with 'I like cock'. It upset him greatly.

(a) - I'm on a GPRS connection that is slower than pulling teeth, so I couldn't be bothered to wait for page 2 to download. Seriously, I'm managing about 8k a second here tops.

(b) - I went from what the first post said, which was saying that it would be on by default. It is a very useful feature for people at work, but not one I would like to see on by default which is what the original suggestion was.

As it stands the proposed setup is "a good thing" and is welcomed by me. But I'd never want to see any kind of auto censoring on here by default.

A wordage thing, I think. I think the original referred to swears being on by default, whereas the later post referred to the swear filter being off by default.

Besides, it's nothing to do with censoring - it's for helping people who can't access the site due to agressively filtering proxies.

That's awesome.

Was that by the mods resetting everyone's foe settings to include the offender, or something more technical?

Incidentally, and I apologise for apparently neglecting to say this before - I'm in favour of an optional, non-default swear filter, and I think we should all pay £2 a month* to Grim... for continuing to put in all this work and effort, when there are so many things he could be doing that would give him more satisfaction and result in far fewer curmudgeonly twats moaning every five seconds**. It's my understanding that this would allow the likes of LaceSensor to read from work? Good, I like the likes of him. I'm in favour of this. I'm merely being the weird old man who says 'What's that? A camera? Takes pictures? One day they'll have them on ever street corner, watching what you do!', and who is then viciously beaten by the other villagers as a heretic. Just minus the beating bit, natch. I hope.

* Collectively. About 2p a month - and brilliantly, the forum's greater success would mean we'd each pay even less! Those are savings you can bank on.
** if you think this is about you, dear reader, you would have entirely missed the point completely.
