I've just watched Hot Fuzz after avoiding it for ages; I had no idea what the film was about.

It was daft. :p

I reckon those films (that one and Shaun of the Dead) aren't that funny, but work well as serious films. Especially Shaun of the Dead: weak comedy, great zombie film. Hot Fuzz all good but overlong. One or two developments too far.

Shaun of the dead stands up as a genuinely good zombie film even if you don't find it funny.

I don't think Hot Fuzz manages the same.

Hot Fuzz works as a silly but serious film until Nick looks at the DVD rack in the services.

I thought Hot Fuzz was good when it got going, the first half I thought was pretty dire.

I like Hot Fuzz more than Shaun of the Dead.

Shaun of the Dead wins every time for me, because it stands up to repeat viewings. I even have a standee of the film in my room.

Mmm - but the whole point of the first half is to set up the second half. Things like Nick Frost asking Simon Pegg "Have you ever done X? No. Have you ever done Y? No.", to then have him do all those things by the end of the film. The set ups for the one-liners like when they go back to the sweet shop - none of that would be funny without everything that precedes it.

I think HF is pretty damned excellent until the big ending, which goes down to merely very good.

And a couple of very gruesome moments!

I think both are ace, Shaun of the Dead perhaps a little more ace because of the scene to Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now".

Must be the lack of zombies I guess.

Worst scene of the film for me.
I really didn't like Shaun of the Dead - I found it properly dull.

I loved Hot Fuzz :)

for me it was the opposite. The last third part of the movie was a tiring experience. The rest of the movie was funny in a more understated way (most of the times).

Shaun of the dead was ok, but not that funny
