I used to get annoyed when we lived in Beckenham, as nothing at all opened on Sunday. Except the pubs. Actually, it's not too different in Stroud.

So, allowing businesses to stay open all day Sunday would probably make fuck all difference if they're already not bothering to open at all.

You could go to tescos, or whatever. The most annoying thing in the world is running out of loo roll at 4:30 on a Sunday.

Exactly, and you need to get some, the shops want to sell you some and the only reason they can't is some other freaky believes in fairies.

Whilst I'm perfectly happy with people opening their businesses on Sunday for those who would like such a service (if you want to keep the sabbath, don't let me stop you), I find it difficult to justify bank holidays and be consistent. A possible solution might be to say that you can work bank holidays if you want, but employers must grant the time off in lieu

What? The shops *are* allowed to open whenever they want, aren't they?

Nope. They can't open from 8am to 8pm on a Sunday, for example. The law prevents them from doing so - as long as they're more than corner shop sized, or something.

Sounds like you live in some sort of backward fundamentalist 3rd world enclave.

Around here, all the big shops, the supermarkets, DIY stores that I avoid shopping at are open on Sunday. All day.

It's the smaller shops that are closed, where it would be quite handy if they were open because otherwise, I have to actually take a day off work to buy anything.

The was a news story on the BBC once about some council or another instructing people not to smoke in their own homes for a minimum period of two hours before any council workers or contractors paid a visit.

Excuse me whilst I fall about laughing.

Did the house actually belong to the council in that case?
And what was the visit for? Social work, looking after their children and tidying their houses up?
I'd be tempted to say "fair enough" if so..

I think it was for any council visitor for any occasion, and all houses that fell under the area controlled by the councils.

They say it was a polite request, but there was a follow-up on the news where council workers were refusing to enter houses that 'smelled of smoke', which of course meant lazy gits under council contacts couldn't be bothered to do loads of jobs.

I tell you what, when I visited my parents flat in spain, the moment you walked in the door you could smell the nicotene in the place. It was so bad the first time I visted that I got a nose bleed about 8 times. (I was there a little over 2 weeks)

So, I can well believe that a place can smell smokey and not be pleasant to stay in.

I think you'll find that the big shops are actually only open for six hours on a Sunday.

There was a piddly tesco express where I used to live that was open 6am-11pm 7 days a week, which was awesome. You must be right about the small shops getting exemption from the 6-hour opening rule. But why? Why allow a small shop to open and not a big one?

Possibly the law is different in Scotland? In England 6 hours is the maximum.

Must be. I'm confused now, I thought you said they couldn't open between 8AM and 8PM on a Sunday - they're hardly going to open for 6 hours outside that time are they?

Ah I hadn't realised you were in Scotland. Apparently there is no rule for Sundays there except that staff can refuse to work them.

No I didn't. I was possibly not clear, but I said they couldn't open from 8am to 8pm, for example. Ie, they can't open for 12 hours on a Sunday. As an example.

That shops are only open 10-4 on a Sunday? Which is fucking useless and the only real reason is a bunch of fuckhead hippies don't like it.

To clarify, I believe the exact english ruling is "No more than 6 hours between 10am and 6pm only if the shop is more than 500sq ft".

Fucking daft.

Shush. We're talking about the big shops to which the sunday trading laws apply. The fact there are loads of small shops open ALL DAY SUNDAY which you can go to to buy stuff is, obviously, neither here nor there when one is complaining about the non-availability of bog roll at 4.30pm on Sunday.

Surely the earlier point that shop workers need to go home and see their families is more applicable to small shops that don't have multiple shifts of available staff? By that logic the small shops should be closed on Sundays and the large ones open.

Besides, the whole point isn't that I want shops to be open when I say, it's that the legislation preventing it is idiotic and pointless.

But not in England - because the small shops deliberately open longer hours on Sundays to take advantage of the fact that the larger shops aren't allowed to.

Depends where you are of course.

And even if you spin it that "Great! small businesses have an advantage over Tesco!" the only small shops the do open on Sunday are in fact, small Tesco.

I expressed a theory about this to my gf a while ago. I theorised that in the future, everything, and I mean everything, will be open 24 hours . Due to population growth, eventually there will be so many people that there physically wont be enough space to accommodate them during current 'peak' times, and so the world would have to shift to two 12 hour systems where one half gets up, works, and shops, and then goes and stays at home while the other half get up and do the same. You heard it here first.

This already happens with factories and hospitals and similar. That's why your daily commute isn't even more horrific than it is already- all those people working lates, earlies, and nights. I think some factories run 24/7 with a two week shutdown once per year to allow major maintenance work.
