Can you still get that one where you have to follow the bear? He was the only thing that ever made me think drinking beer was cool as a kid.

'And I Claim My Five Pounds'.

Author:  kalmar [ Fri Aug 22, 2008 10:00 ]
Post subject:  Re: BeEx Facebook Group - for those with no real friends

Target audience.

Lobby Lud was a fictional character invented in August 1927 by the Westminster Gazette.
Anonymous employees of the newspaper would visit seaside resorts. The newspaper would print details of the town, a description of the appearance of that day's "Lobby Lud", and a particular pass phrase.
[..]
Other newspapers such as the Daily Mirror ran similar schemes – "You are (name) and I claim my five pounds" – the most well-known challenge phrase, seems to date from a Daily Mail version which ran after the Second World War.

Ahhh, I feel slightly better in myself for knowing that now. I shall use this phrase and confuse others

Other abbreviations dating from the second world war include the excellent "NORWICH".

Excellent Trivia Moment:

The DFS sofa shop chain is not in fact a sofa shop. It stands for Derbyshire Financial Services, and concerns itself primarily with loans. The sofas are just a good expensive item to draw people in.

PROCEED.

My sofa wasn't expensive, it was actually very reasonable. But then, I bought mine from the company that used to be called Direct Furnishing Supplies.

TWAIN isn't actually an acronym it was literally between two items and was turned into an acronym later by a smartarse.

RAW isn't an acronym either and although it's accepted in it's capitalised form, it still irks me somewhat.

That's not so, I'm afraid. DFS doesn't stand for anything.

I believe this is contended; the accepted definition these days was that it was a backronym from the Rudyard Kipling quote "and never the twain shall meet" but someone who was in the original standards group reckoned that it was always a jokey acronym. [citation needed], sub please check.

Grim... is probably referring to the legal technicality that also meant "MG" never stood for Morris Garages, no matter how much people looked at Mr Morris, and his Garage, and his "MG" brand.

You cannot trademark an acronym (or an initialism I guess), so they will always steadfastly refuse to admit that anything stands for anything.

Except that DFS was formed after Northern Upholstery bought a bankrupt company called Direct Furnishing Supplies...

So yes, it doesn't now, but it DID.
