I tried that mode out and invaded a couple of people, it's pretty well done!

I’ll be honest, I didn’t care for it. I vaguely recall enjoying the original and don’t think I played the 2nd one much, but, from what I remember, it was an enjoyable hack em up.

Turns out, it tries waaay too hard to be cray cray and just comes off as a bit shit. 3 times you fight a boss who ends up being killed immediately and you have to fight someone else. There’s a musical chairs boss fight, but most of the fights are just standard affairs. Hack, hack, hack, yawn. Yeah, there’s jobs to do in between missions like before which includes mowing lawns and lots of other stuff that’s actually really irritating. But worse still, there’s no missions before the boss. You just run around the areas finding arena fights to partake in. It’s boring. It’s lazy. It’s not fun.

And it runs like shit on the Switch. Pop up, weird textures, textures loading in late, load times are long etc.

Frankly, Suda51 hasn’t done anything worth playing since Killer7. And he steadfast fucking refuses to put the updated PC version on consoles for some reason. Load of rubbish.

Boo. Most of our fun bits have been when we’ve got invaded and you’re looking for a phone to reveal their position or looking for some nazi that’s not acting like the others. Or when you’ve about done a mission and some dickhead turns up to put a spanner in the works as you dash for the exit.

Slightly prettier and with some Hitman elements but ultimately more of the same. Played it through on the hardest difficulty, authentic mode, and bloody loved it. Go loud or go home.

17. TMNT: Shredder's Revenge (XSX)

A pixel-graphic side-scrolling beat 'em up (apparently called a "belt fighter"? If you say so) featuring up to six (!) player co-op, this game is fucking lovely. You can be any of the turtles, or splinter, or April (who is a fucking kung fu God suddenly) or Kasey Jones once you completed the game once. It all looks fantastic and you can beat people up in lots of different ways and the music is fucking on point and I liked it a lot.

Downsides? Well, it's quite a bit too long (16 levels), and there isn't a huge amount of enemy variety (which perhaps makes it feel too long) and it's a bit easy (which perhaps makes it feel too long), especially in story mode.

But it's the turtles and the turtles are great. And it's free on GamePass (like all the other Xbox games in that list).

Pixel art is ace; sound effects are ace; music is fucking amazing; gameplay is the standard beat em up affair but modernised with combos and stuff and April O’Neill is by far the best character. She can juggle for days. Fucking great.

Clocked it in 3 sessions over 3 days on the hardest difficulty and it wasn’t that hard unfortunately. Needed to be slightly more challenging. Or maybe more penalty for the special moves over and over. Any comments…

Did you do it in Arcade mode? That's harder, as you have limited continues, no levelling up and the lives don't reset between rounds.

I'm not sure how I feel about this game. The remake looked and sounded lovely, there were many good bits, and I had a good time. However, I'm fairly sure I'd have had a better time if I'd just played Bloodborne again. The main problems I had with Demon's Souls were:
The mechanic that makes a world more difficult if you die too often. I mean, WTF? I didn't really understand the world tendency stuff and I still don't. The only thing I understood is "don't let it go black or it's going to fuck you right in the bhole").
Some of the bosses were hard (Spider-cunt and Flame-cunt), some were stupidly easy (all of them in the poison world), most were pretty simple.
Unless I didn't find them all, only some of the levels had shortcuts. I didn't hate the lack of checkpointing, but it could be a slog to get to the boss on some of them.
Being able to carry massive amounts of grass made things pretty trivial when you find a good place to farm it (which you discover fairly early on).
Having a max carry weight was a pointless annoyance.
Fuck the rolling ninja skeletons.

In conclusion: I liked it. But You can tell it was their first try.

1) Secret of Monkey Island (ScummVM/Switch - I think it was the PC version)
Still lovely, and I still remember how to complete it. The music didn't sound as good as I remember (this might be a PC/Amiga thing, or maybe it just wasn't setup right, but the Switch kept crashing when I went into the settings).
Already started Monkey Island 2 and I don't have a clue what I'm doing, but I'm blundering through ok at the moment.
2) Monkey Island 2
Got there in the end. The first version I played kept crashing on Phatt Island, so I had to start again. It didn't seem as difficult as I remember it, but I guess that just meant most of the solutions were still in my head somewhere. The few times I did get stuck, I knew what I was meant to do, just couldn't remember how to do it.
All ready for the proper sequel now...

3) Yakuza Kiwami PS4/5
After many aborted attempts to get through this since it first came out on the PS2, I finally made it all the way through. Unfortunately, I was playing it over such a long period of time, I usually had absolutely no idea who anybody was or what was going on. Fortunately, Yakuza 2 features a nice recap at the start of the game, which I probably would have rewatched before finishing this one if I'd known about it (although I guess it would have spoiled the ending, so maybe not). Anyway, it's still the spiritual successor to Shenmue, and I felt compelled to do far too many side stories for very little gain, but I'll try to finish the second (and subsequent) ones in a bit of a shorter time frame

4) Super Mario Bros - Super Mario All-Stars - SNES/Switch
Not sure why I played the SNES version rather than the original (although when I moved onto 2 on the NES, I couldn't deal with the button layout, so maybe it was a blessing). Anyway, I must have finished this loads of times, but always with gratuitous use of warp zones, so this time I went through each level (and made gratuitous use of the rewind feature), and also the "harder version" (was that on the NES, I seem to remember you getting a level selection when you finished it).

Anyway, onto the lost levels.

I’m reasonably sure that you can only unlock one area in Bolataria Castle place at the very start on white world tendency on NG+ after killing the final boss. It’s right at the start and you run forward and it’s on the left. So I start NG+ on the old PS3, run over and it’s unlocked. I’m eager to have a sniff about and I reckon I died just a couple of times in this tiny area. I even misjudge something and fall off to my death like a dick. Then it was locked for good. Fucking world tendency shit.

You rather need to only play offline if you want to control it.

Then it's a simple casr of just dividing in the Nexus every time to best a boss and you can get to our white easily enough.

Then resurrect and die lots of times for our black tendency.

Online, it's very much the whim of the game world as to the state

Well. It's like Super Mario Bros, but designed by someone that hates you. I cannot begin to fathom how you might play it without rewinding every few seconds (or sometimes rewinding entire levels, because you've run out of time getting lost), as the game likes to throw pixel perfect jumps at you, or jumps that you can't quite make, and have to approach in a different way. It's not Rick Dangerous-esque in how it tries to kill you, because you can always see what's coming, however it does throw pretty much everything it possibly can at you without cheating.
There was one part I couldn't work out how to get past without getting hit, and I eventually found a YouTube video of someone getting past successfully, but it was never something I'd have worked out how to do.

It’s the monster battler that spawned the Persona series but now without the random battles (thank fuck)!

It’s also got less shit graphics than SMT3 that I played and open world levels. It’s also got this weird apocalyptic vibe that I really enjoyed. And, yes, it’s got the same story as the previous SMT games (IFAIK) where you make new friends, kill them and become a god.

I miss the social aspects of the Persona games but there’s just something about this that I really enjoyed a lot. It’s almost purer and less padded: just get some weird looking penis monster and go fight a demon have a shit on a toilet. This happens.

5) Super Mario Bros - The Lost Levels - Super Mario All-Stars SNES/Switch

6) Super Mario Bros 2- Super Mario All-Stars SNES/Switch
Tedious shite.

7) Super Mario Bros 3 - Super Mario All-Stars SNES/Switch
This is more like it. Not really sure how I missed out on this one when I was younger. We definitely owned it, but I must have been too busy playing on my Megadrive, which is a shame as I really enjoyed Super Mario World a few years later, and this feels like a real stepping stone towards that game.
Not sure what to play next now...

I'd go back to Super Mario 64. I've only recently finished that and it was absolutely glorious.

No, so maybe they're next. I'll see if they're in the Snes section.

I played that recently as part of whatever that Switch compilation is. I got so far, then started to find it a bit frustrating.

I had one, but I sold it.

I am actually part way through Super Mario World 3D on the Switch, and the only reason I've not played it for ages is that I need to put the card in.

This was like Limbo, but more (and easier, I thought). I really liked it, it was beautiful and had some great puzzles in. The ending was fantastic, and it only took a few hours to do the whole thing.

I got 1,000 gamerpoints on this one, although I had to get some hints off the Internet to find a few of the orbs, and certainly to unlock the secret ending, god knows how people found that.

Kinda accidentally finished this after dipping in and out of the game every now and again when I was bored. It’s great for that, by the way. Anyway, the game? You dodge discs. In a room. And die. A lot. Nice little pick up and play for a bit game.

13) Cyberpunk 2077 (PS)

I’ll be honest, I did mainly the main missions cause I was a little bored by it. It looks beautiful, really nice; sounds great, has some terrific art and all that beautiful stuff.

But the gameplay is so fucking boring. The gunplay isn’t very exciting and swapping out guns and stuff is tedious, especially on the fly which involves dipping in and out the menus. Worst still the menus almost require you to move the cursor around like a mouse. I mean, that’s usually enough to wind me the fuck up. And the text is too small even on my bloody great telly. Time and time again I’ve been picking stuff up and been unable to read what I’ve picked up cause it pops up as tiny text in the corner of the screen in an aqua blue colour that blends in with the bright colours. And I swear the majority of the game is just following people about and listening to fuckers talk. Or you’re unable to start a ruck cause this mission requires, urgh, stealth couching slowly around the environments and it’s instant death or restart if you fuck up. And how come I shoot and shoot and shoot the bullet sponge enemies and make the numbers fly off their face but sometimes I get shot once and I’m dead? Probably something about levelling up and shit. In an FPS. That’s exactly what you need… And why are the boss battles so shit? I defeated the big baddie at the end using the power of … CORNERS. Specifically the boss couldn’t navigate a corner so I’d just stand round the corner, dip out and unload round after round of buckshot into his face from one foot away. For minutes at a time because he’s a big fucking bullet sponge of course. Yawn.

Essentially Cyberpunk is alright but actually a bit shit to play. Absolutely nothing to do with any bugs although I did encounter a couple of bugs: people inside people like that scene from the recent Bladerunner stylee; my car showing up without any windows or doors, and graphical effects like fog appearing and disappearing, but the bugs aren’t the reason why it’s not very good. It’s just not much fun to play. Meh.

To be slightly fair to it, it's not an FPS, it's an RPG, but I agree with most of that. I quite liked the fighting except the boxing which was just nonsense. What annoyed me was the amount of things that were just missing from an open world game like that. Like, given the enormous amount of plot given over to a group of nomadic mechanics and the importance of one of the main NPCs being a travelling mechanic, why can't I mod or paint my cars? All the driving stuff is dull

If you’ve got PS+ for this month then don’t miss out on this one if you like, say, Risk of Rain 2 (or that type of stuff). It’s a roguelike shooter where you take on 4 bosses across several worlds. It doesn’t take too long to get to grips with (it’s a bit more basic and much more forgiving than the God that is Risk of Rain 2), and once you’ve found a load out that you enjoy it’s a decent blast knocking out the 4 bosses. Good stuff, says I.
