Christmas

No, wait. That's only when I'm walking backwards across the Irish Sea.

I was wondering about salaries at a company. If you had double the budget for salaries, but couldn't hire anyone new. How could you fairly give everyone a payrise, but make it so the lowest paid person got the highest rise. And the highest paid person got the lowest raise.

Everyone gets a raise, and no one overtakes anyone so they suddenly earn more than someone who used to earn more than them.

Also if there were 3 people on different salaries, say on £24,000, £26,000 and £28,000, their new salaries would be similarly arranged (just not a 2k gap between them).

If your current budget is £100k and you're doubling it, why can you not divide the new 100k evenly between everyone?
The top paid person's new salary would increase by the same monetary amount, but be worth less of a percentage to them.

So where S is existing salary, B is new budget, and n is number of employees you'd have:

new salary for each person = ((B/n)/S) * 100)

Does that work? is it fair?

It works as a percentage, but it doesn't actually bring everyone closer together. (ie if person A earns £5000 more than person B before hand, they will still earn £5000 more after the raise. I wanted to try and reduce the gap between everyone (not just as a percentage).

If you're doubling the budget, and you want to bring people closer together, just increase the lowest paid persons salary by the highest paid persons salary, and so on, but then everyone will end up being paid exactly the same.

You could probably fiddle it so the lowest paid person gets increased by the highest amount minus the number of employees /2, then you'd just end up with everyone having increasing salaries by £1.

Bit more fiddling required for odd number of employees, but you get the drift.

Had new yale locks fitted, and the spare keys are ordered form Yale. The irony of having my house keys posted to me is not lost.

Say what? For Yale keys? Are they made out of titanium or something?

We have to pay a stupid amount of money for spare keys for our front door lock because they're "Ultion" keys but I wouldn't expect that for Yale.

These are the ones, you get a fob with the codes on.

Just for the record, I used those in my rental houses, it means that the tenants can't get extra ones cut so I know they don't have keys to sneak back in (I always change the locks anyway, but still).

They are really easy to fit yourself and you can buy a lock with as many keys as you need in the first place. eBay is a good place to buy them.

Now looking, I could have replaced the lock with 6 keys, for roughly the same price.. :)

My new front door has Ultion keys. I ordered some extras earlier today - all I gave them was the number on the key and an address to send them to, which feels shockingly non-secure.

That was the same with yale. There are cheaper places but giving a random person on amazon, my address and key details, was worrying.

It's not that bit I'm concerned about, it's the idea that someone can snap a quick photo of my keys lying on the table in a coffee shop and can then just order themselves a copy of my door key

Although the new door doesn't latch unless you manually lock it with the key so basically my front door is just always unlocked now.

Nah I'm good. I just don't do locked doors now. This feels okay. More than bothering to do anything about it, anyway.

I got my spares cut at Timpson, and had to leave my original key with them.

Nevertheless, I would assume that Ultion have a database of key numbers and addresses and will only send the spare keys for your "keycode" out to the address that is registered?

I have just lost some minutes to http://www.birdsarentreal.com.

From their FAQ:

Very important FAQ about the apostrophe, too.

I believe my father had some kind of card he needed to get them to make spares for his doot keys.

You could increase the lowest paid person’s salary by (for example) 30% of the highest paid person’s, and increase the highest paid person’s wage by 30% of the lowest, etc, all the way through the organisation. It’d give everyone a raise and bring the wages closer together. Whatever is left you could just split between everyone equally. You could try other percentages, of course, depending on the scale of the disparity.

That would work in a real world scenario, where someone would know all the actual salaries of the employees, but in my theoretical scenario, where I want a nice simple formula, it's not quite what I'm after.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys, for my nonsense. It's far more time than it reasonably deserves!

You couldn’t apply any formula without knowing the wages of the employees, as you wouldn’t know who to apply the rates to without knowing what they earned to start with, if working with a specific budget.

I was thinking if the salaries were between £20,000 and £2,000,000 say. With a normal distribution.

I’d be researching the authors to immediately discount the ones you shouldn’t read because you won’t like their style, or they’re not very good. Even if you read a lot, that’s several years worth of books to get through.

Dan Abnett would be my pick of the GW authors, though that's not necessarily saying a great deal.

I can keep the door and they will swap the handles or I can ask for a replacement door.

So you've not got what you ordered and to correct that will cost them money

For their side :

You keep the door as is - costs them nothing
You keep the door and they swap out the handles - costs them a small amount
They swap the door for the right one - costs them the most

If you really want the door you ordered get them to change it for the one they were supposed to put in
If your okay with the one you have then ask them for a partial refund (regardless of the handles or not) ?

They offered me £50. Which is not too bad, and I kinda like the door.

Hey, "The World". Shut the fuck about the Royal Family. No one cares as much as you seem to think we do. So shush. It's boring.

Oh I agree. I did not watch it.

Although Morgans strop on TV has made me chuckle.
