I got my first jab Friday morning (AZ)
felt fine all day, sort of tired and meh towards evening so went to bed hoping for a good nights sleep
started shivering, got extra blanket, kept shivering and shaking and feeling rotten for ages, took temp in the morning and had little fever, took paracetamols
then I found 4 voicemails from my gp, wanting to talk about the jab but not saying why, and as it was sat. no way of calling back until tues
then I saw news that they decided to pause jabbing with AZ again and thought probably that's it
then someone pointed me to the news that 150 ppl from my surgery had been given a double dose on Friday ....
yeah so I think that's why she called
luckily I started to feel better as the day went on and I'm fine now
apparently a double dose does no harm (and no good) but still pretty sloppy, whoops
still very happy and grateful to have had the first jab!

:D This made me lol, but only because I know you are ok, Miki.

I don’t understand how the double dose even happened? I assume the doses in the vials are metered, so why is there twice the amount available to inject? It just seems really odd. I’m super glad you had no additional side affects and are now rested.

The vials contain about 5 doses, I believe.

T\here was a thing a while back about being able to sometimes squeeze a 6th dose out of it.

I don't know exactly how this is being distributed, but after helping my wife revise whilst she was studying to be a nurse, a lot of it was making up the right dose based on certain concentrations of the base ingredients and the amount the patient needed.

Also AFAIK the people giving out these doses are not always medical staff, but people who have had some intensive training on how to administer this specific vaccine. So I can see how those things might compound to create an error. (Like I said I don't know the particulars here, and especially in Netherlands, so that could all be waffle - probably is)

Glad you're well Miki

I had absolutely no idea that the vials contained anything other than one dose. I am really surprised by that, though I don’t know why. It must cut down on a massive amount of materials waste, but I guess leaves more margin for error.

It’s 8 or 10 for the AZ vaccine.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... strazeneca

It’s only .5ml per dose so it wouldn’t be practical to do individual measures as you’d need more packaging (which is in huge demand) and have to make them all slightly generous measures to ensure nobody gets too little. If you did 10x0.6 you’ve used 6ml for 10 doses as you waste the extra. Put that all in a larger bottle and you can give an extra dose quite easily.

Post subject:  Re: Coronavirus

I would imagine that most vaccines which are given on a kind of 'here and there' basis are probably in single (or just over) single doses in one vial, but as this vaccine is intended to get to all the millions (and millions) ASAP the bulking up makes a lot of sense logistically, as there are essentially queues of folk waiting.

Vaccination drive out here has begun but it doesn't need to be as fast as other places that got hit a lot harder.

Post subject:  Re: Coronavirus

someone had pre-loaded a bunch of syringes with vaccine, I guess so the person injecting didn't have to fiddle about doing that while a person was sitting there (times 4 dotted around the room)
the syringes were really long and skinny, apparently to be able to get the extra dose from the vial, I guess the ppl loading them made a mistake in reading the lines on the syringes

the yearly flu vaccine also comes in mutli dose vials, I've heard the staff talk about weather or not to open a new vial, checking how many people they were still expecting not wanting and open vial to go to waste
I guess they do it when expecting to jab many people, my fertility stuff and HepA and HepB and Tetanus etc all came in individual dose ampules

Just got me Pfizer and felt none the wiser. Pretty smooth operation going down here in Splott, Cardiff. Didn't really feel it either which is good as I've always disliked looking at needles in movies. Chap who administered it was nice and had some admirable distracting patter while he worked his magic. Very slight arm ache and mild pins-and-needles at points but so far so good. I'm anticipating the second one will lay me low a bit though! Glad everyone's seems to be going okay here, though blimey - two doses Miki? That didn't sound like fun but glad you're fine now with the minty-goodness health-feels flowing through you. x

That’s probably because my short term memory has deteriorated since I had, you know, that thing. They stick a needle in your arm and squirt disinfectant into you, or something.

I had mine the other week and felt absolutely horrendous afterwards! My heart was pounding so much, I definitely would have been worried if I hadn't seen the list of side effects. Most of my family had OAZ, and the kids have had Pfizer, all with varying degrees of side effects. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it. Allegedly the second dose of Pfizer is worse but we'll see how they all get on.

Youngest son has put off registering for his at the moment, he has exams all through May so is worried about side effects possibly knocking him out of action. Everyone else in my family (parents, siblings, kids, husband and his kids) will all be vaccinated by the end of July so I'm really looking forward to that and hopefully being able to travel to the UK and Ireland after that.

Post subject:  Re: Coronavirus

I want to vent about something Covid-related. At a number of medical places I’ve been recently they’ve had those ‘stay 2m apart’ red dots on the floor. Ive just got back from a place where they are keeping everyone distanced by making each person stand on a dot. Simple and effective. Apart from the fact that they are NOWHERE NEAR 2m apart. Standing on one I could very easily give the woman in front of me a shoulder massage if we both consented (I did t suggest this as I thought it’d be weird).

So the person officiating the whole operation keeps telling people to move up to the next dot. I hang one dot back, trying to ignore it. Then she tells me to step up to the next one to wait. I, politely as I can say ‘I’ll wait a bit further back if that’s ok’. She said ‘the dots are here to space people out’. I replied ‘but the dots themselves say to stay 2m distant, but are spaced at about 70cm, so I don’t want to get too close, for both our sakes’. She seemed to not like me then, but honestly my anxiety is really high at the moment (the moment meaning the last 15 months) and I am just super, super-aware of things. Going outside into any public space, especially indoors, is mentally exhausting now :(

Not at all - I should have just said, to save you asking. I'm a poll clerk on Thursday, and they've asked that we get a test a couple of days beforehand. (And I should say, just a quickie lateral flow indicative test thing, not the PCR job. I went to a centre just to make sure I had the result in time.)

I'm a poll clerk on Thursday as well! It's amazing what I, as a self employed individual, will do for cash... anyway, I was sent a load of tests in the post today. I believe I've got to take one tomorrow and let someone know the results? I'll figure it out tomorrow.

Yeah, I've always fancied doing the job, but also hope lots of people (out of the 33% or so who usually show up) have chosen to post theirs and it's a lovely quiet day.

That was my first ever test - totally different lifestyle, living with two oldies, we are essentially in contact with no one and have had no need for tests yet. I could have got one posted, but fancied being watched so I didn't stint on doing it properly etc.

Hooray! It is such a simple thing to get the job, do a day then get paid, I just couldn't resist. It didn't say on my instruction letter that they'd actually check, and just that I should let them know if it (and follow-up PCR) was positive, but I guess it varies a little everywhere. And if they do check, at least I don't have to pretend I deleted the text or something.
