Funnily enough I was watching a documentary on Wayne Williams, the serial killer and paedophile. One of the first cases to use a criminal psychologist on the prosecution side. At one point he predicted that Williams at some point would feign an illness to gain control of the court proceedings. I have no idea why this is relevant.

Oh look! Shineys!

Well, yeah, but he hasn't survided it YET. Maybe they should mint a 'Trump has survived Covid-19 so far" coin.

This NHS app may work now, but it's still got some way to go before you could class it as good and useful.

Helen's phone popped up with "you may have been exposed to Coronavirus" but it doesn't give any further details and you can't even see the warning in the app afterwards.
It doesn't log GPS details, so they obviously can't tell you where it happened, but they could let you know if it's because you checked in to a location, or because you were in close proximity to someone else and more importantly when. Without that you can't tell if this was a high risk situation where a test is advisable, or a low risk one where you don't need to bother.

Author:  Cras [ Tue Oct 06, 2020 18:20 ]
Post subject:  Re: Coronavirus

It's the latter. The wording is crappy but if it pops up with that and nothing else, it's a warning of low risk exposure. It'll be something like passing someone in the street, compared to spending 20 minutes in close proximity. If it's high risk that means get tested and/or isolate, it'll tell you so in the notification and in the app.

Never really thought of that redundancy, but you can have degrees of proximity. A quick Google suggests there are recorded instances of it being used going back 150 years.

It's certainly no "hence why" which is the one that's really bugging me at the moment.

Closer proximity and closest proximity are entirely valid, yes.

Obviously it's me using that term as I am in no way qualified to...erm...qualify it. The app itself has a sliding scale of risk factors that combine to decide what constitutes a high risk exposure that requires isolation.

Now why it notifies you at all in the event of a low risk event I have no idea.

I accept it has fallen into common usage because people don't know what proximity actually means, but it's as redundant as 'gateau cake' which I read on a menu tonight.

You don't say to someone who's far away that they're in far proximity to you.

However you could. Proximity is a scale. I present as evidence Proxima Centauri. It is the nearest star of Centaurus, but it is certainly not in close proximity.

Not really.

You could say "a is in closer proximity to b than c, but d is in the closest proximity of all."

'Close proximity' doesn't really have any meaning and is tautological in the same way 'completely devoid' is.

Author:  markg [ Tue Oct 06, 2020 23:33 ]
Post subject:  Re: Coronavirus

I've always just read it as emphasis I suppose. Like your other example, you could say "fucking devoid" instead and it would mean the same thing.

I can't begin to imagine how frustrating it must be over there now.

There are people over here who want our borders to reopen fully to allow free-movement without having to isolate for 14 days upon their return. There is a lot of "Let's just get on with it and if you don't want to risk catching it, stay inside" but I'm not at that stage at all. Like all of a sudden we're okay sacrificing either the freedoms or the lives of the vulnerable members of our society because people want to come and go as they please without isolating?

I absolutely can't get my head around that mindset, one of the welders who came over here as a key worker had Covid-19, the consequences of an infected person circulating in a population where we have no social distancing, no shielding, no masks, no extra sanitation etc doesn't really bear thinking about.

Some may say sending the five of them to jail was a bit harsh but they are the laws of the land, if you come here, follow the rules!

I can't help but feel some folks over here have got a bit blasé about the whole thing because we've been Covid-free for months already, do we really want to go back to how things were back in March and April? I think not. Besides which it's been well-established that there is simply too much movement in any population for the whole, 'Well just stay inside if you don't want to risk it' approach to even work anyway. Just even typing it out makes it sound as stupid as it is.

Moreover a lot of people are focusing far too much on the mortality rate, without giving consideration to the increasingly serious landscape of Long-Covid, which is looking like it's going to be a nasty problem going forward, even in some young and healthy people. There are still far too many unknowns about this disease, but we do know that it can attack multiple internal organs and the brain, the 'it's just a cold' crowd really boil my piss.
