My employer has announced an official date for reopening the Glasgow office of 7th September; with all the social distancing measures you'd expect. I'm actually kind of surprised they're bothering to do it so early when we all seem to be delivering pretty well from home, but whatever. I had signed up for the first wave on the assumption that gyms in Scotland would have reopened by the time the office did (my gym is in the city centre so it's more convenient to go there when I'm already in the city at the office) but it doesn't look like that's going to be the case, which leaves me wondering whether I should bother. Also because returning to the office is really only worthwhile if a number of my other team mates were to do it, and I've honestly no idea what other people's feelings are on the matter. I'll almost certainly go back at least one day on that first week, even if only to gauge what it's like commuting etc. After that though I'm not sure.

It's, um, not a flattering comparison. Though it is a hilarious one and if you've not seen What We Do In The Shadows (either the film or the TV series) then you should absolutely remedy that ASAP.

I don't mind at all. bigger fish to fry and all that. Plus the fact I've developed a thicker skin when it comes to taking the piss. I don't know anything about "What We Do In The Shadows". Might have a peek next time I'm bored, which is almost never these days. (one of the positives)

The Work from home / work on site split (3, and 3 days respectively) is still working for me in principle, as I get the best of both worlds. I'm not sure I'd do too well WFH the whole time, as work gives me a break from home and vice versa.

However, it's about time I set up a proper office space - the kitchen table is very uncomfortable now for me.

If you couldn't get enough of the Cummings affair, there's been a heck of a scandal in Ireland right now where 81 of the great and good were caught at a golf society dinner in flagrant breach of rules. The ever-interesting "Irish Passport" podcast has a great episode going into detail on the affair, although it was recorded before the resignations started.

Just watched this and NOW I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK, I don't have the wherewithal to decide if it's bollocks and I can't really find any rebuttals of the points rasied:

Basically, he's saying that all the data suggests that coronavirus followed the same curve as other flu pandemics, it always was going to pretty much follow that curve regardless of lockdown and now it's effectively over. e.g. Pubs have been open for 9 weeks with effectively just token distancing and yet there has been no corresponding increase in deaths. Same story wherever lockdown has been relaxed/ended, deaths aren't significantly increasing. The only thing really rising is cases rather than deaths and that's due mostly to more testing.

Is he right about token distancing though? I don't know a single bar that isn't seated-only with table service. Compare that to crowding four deep at a bar and that's not token anything, it's a noticeable behaviour change with real distancing effect

True, but it's still loads more people together in indoor spaces than during full lockdown, seen lots of busy scenes.

If you're going to get it you're much better off getting it now than 100,000 cases later.

"Testing issues will be solved in a matter of weeks," says Hancock.

If course it will, but how many? 5, 10, 52? I think we should be told.

I notice he unwisely didn't say, "could" be solved in a matter of weeks.

He was asked if it would be solved “next week” and subtly shifted the answer.

Nobody was fooled, and you can measure pretty much any timescale in weeks if you have a big enough calculator.

We’ve got Channel 4 at work interviewing our Covid testers as we are apparently running a really good service. Saying that we’re full until Saturday, though I guess it’s still better than a lot of other places, at least our staff can currently get appointments within the testing window

You mean this local lockdown thing? I don't think that's right is it? You can go to the pub with someone from your household but not socialise there with anyone from outside it.

I think he means Mali can go to the pub to drink with his mate, but same mate cannot go to Mali's house to drink (presumably because the homebrew is unsafe).
