After a period of, at best, foolish mishaps, leaving over 60,000 dead, the government announces an easing of restrictions but isn't clear on the science behind why it's all suddenly better, then cancels the daily press conferences to deny any form of scrutiny on this decision. Huh. okaaay...

Trying to find the positives and as I've long argued that a benefit of devolved or federal systems is the ability to run experiments in policies, this whole affair is going to generate plenty of material for future research.

I'm not entirely convinced, however, that Mr Johnson fully understands that, on this issue, he can only speak for England.

I had a text from Russell’s dad yesterday saying ‘so the end is in sight for lockdown. You’ve all done incredibly well’ which was both lovely and supportive but also sounded like ‘that’s it, back to normal’.

I guess when it’s been announced that you’ll be able to stand 1m away from a load of drunks at Wetherspoons then that sounds to many like, yeah, they don’t give a crap, now.

Labour’s Peter Kyle asks what will be done to protect places like Hove, which he represents. He says pubs won’t be able to take the names of all people. The seafront will be crowded, he says.

In Wales we've just relaxed the rules a smidge. Non-essential shops opened back up on Monday provided they stick with the two metre distance. I passed through town on Tuesday to get to work on my one-day-a-week-in-office thing down in Cardiff Bay. It was still pretty empty of people. There's a lane system operating in Cardiff with yellow lines painted on the ground, so you keep to the left whatever direction you go. No pub openings mooted yet here in Wales. Outdoor cafes allowing for a coffee to be drunk outside is the closest we've got. People seem okay.

Over the last few years I realised that I'm beginning to view England as a slightly foreign country, incidentally.

Huh, we got a circular today in the council email with a photo of a burnt car door. Whelp, whatever. Or better yet, why not cool your alcohol rub in the fridge for a pleasant cooling sensation.

Yeah, that circular is bunkum I'm afraid. Fullfact did a piece on it that I was reading this morning - although the claim in the email about the flash point of alcohol hand-sanitiser being 21 degrees is true, the auto-ignition temperature is closer to 350+ degrees, so it'd need an actual spark or other source of ignition to catch fire.

And of course, if the inside of your car is near 350 degrees C, you've got other problems.

I’d be looking at disposable lighters or aerosol based hand sanitisers if they exist, as being a more likely culprit here

As long as you get a 1000mg paracetamol down you (dosage may vary) wrapped in cool syrup, then a quick shower and you are good to go again.

I read that as "drink 1000mg worth of Calpol" rather than "wash down 1000mg of tablets with Calpol". Washing down 800mg of ibuprofen with 1000mg Calpol however is probably ok. But only if you eat some toast after.

I left a disposable lighter on my dashboard once and it exploded. That also didn't ignite, so I just had to pick up bits of lighter.

I’m quite nervous about school, though hiding this from Darwin. He was ill in early March, so left one day midweek, and we kept him home as the symptoms weren’t exactly certain then, and the nursery had closed down before he went back. He never got to say goodbye to his friends or teachers, it all just stopped.

We’ve had to explain very loosely why we can’t go out to the shops, to the coffee shop, the park to play in swings, see Nana, etc, that there are more germs and we need to wash our hands more, and things like that. He’s a very sensitive child and took it all in, but with a sadness.

I know he’s always been a bit nervous about starting big school. The nursery is nothing to do with the school and nowhere close, so he won’t have the familiarity of friends or location. I don’t know how on earth the new reception starters are going to do with such alien separation from their peers, having to sit and play apart, and what that’s going to do to the socialisation with the classmates they have not been given opportunity to bond with. Mostly I don’t know how they are going to settle into such a new environment in such strange times when the teachers cannot come close to comfort them. I find the whole thing weighing incredibly heavily. I think if they’d already been established at the school it might be a bit different, but being introduced to a new school environment after being away from nursery for so long (his nursery has not reopened) seems like a tough ask, and I hope not socially damaging.

Have you checked with the school how much distancing is actually going to happen Mimi? Only I know that at my kid's school, although they're keeping class sizes under 15 and in groups ("bubbles") they wouldn't normally be in, those groups are allowed to interact and pay with each other and the teachers are not keeping 2m distance (especially for littlies where full on social distancing is basically impossible) Mine aren't back yet but we walked past the school a couple of weeks ago and the bubbles were all outside playing at various corners of the playground and my two wanted to break in to play :DD

Izzy was very sensitive at Darwin's age (still is, albeit in different ways) and didn't really know anyone at school because she didn't go to the local nursery, and very quickly settled in at that age. I know the circumstances are vastly different, and I absolutely don't mean to play down your concerns and worries, but hopefully you take some reassurance from our experience. :luv:

I don’t think you’re trying to downplay them at all, Jem. I’ve looked at the school’s published measures. They seem pretty common to all the schools here. Pods of no more than 15, seated apart at 2m distance. Each child has set of materials, don’t bring a pencil case. no school uniform. Fresh set of clothes each day. Packed lunches, eaten at own desk. No mixing at play time with other kids. Outside play encouraged at break time but at a distance from other children.

If they aren’t sticking to their own published measures, I don’t think that is particularly reassuring either, sadly, as I think we need to be able to trust that what they are saying is in place is actually happening, and on the flip side to wanting him to not struggle due to lack of contact it would also be a worry if precautions are not being met because of family health issues which could be potentially <blah... just>

I’m trying not to think about it too much yet as I know it is a way off, but it creeps in and hits me late at night.

Yes, that sounds pretty much the same as our school have published (think it's the standard advice basically), although the no mixing with kids at playtime means no mixing with other bubbles. They can still play within their bubbles. :) (Or our school are breaking rules!) Might be worth having a chat with them to get them to clarify if it's not clear either way.
