All musical's are shit (as is opera and ballet), the concept is utter madness and I have no truck with it. I feel embarrassed to watch them. Films with some songs are sometimes OK, e.g. Hard Day's Night

I think you're wrong there.

I beg to differ.

Yes, because of the song "Think", which is Aretha Franklin telling Matt "Guitar" Murphy to think about things when the Blues Brothers ask him to rejion the band.

Also there is a bit of magic music going on when people are dancing outside Ray's Music Exchange.

You should watch it.

I did try to watch it once, at Russell’s suggestion, but I just didn’t get on with it or find it entertaining. I know that’s like blaspheming here, but I didn’t think it was any good.

I’ve never been that entertained by it either.

We are all allowed a few films we just don’t get.

Yes, musicals.

But just so you understand what a load of other people here have suddenly felt Meems, I also think The Princess Bride is pretty shit.

I think in both cases I think it's because I didn't watch them as a child.

I actually don’t feel anything at that, because I know, intellectually and morally, that you are completely and utterly wrong. And dead inside. And most likely an evil harbinger of the end of days.

I think you’re right, though. I think a lot is based on an affinity being sown in childhood, though with The Princess Bride I know plenty who saw it for the first times much later in adulthood and loved it. I think films that rely on special effects perhaps come off worse.

Yep for reference I saw both Star Wars and Princess Bride as an adult and loved both.

I think it's more than that, I think coming to any classic or widely riffed upon film decades too late can make it hard to engage with. There are so many scenes you half-know from random sources like Simpsons gags or sly references throughout pop culture. For example, I only watched 2001 a few years back (I know!) and didn't find it very engaging. I knew most of the story beats and key moments already. It's a rare film that isn't diminished by that much foreknowledge.

I watched Princess Bride in 2000 after returning from clubbing but I was mooning after my mate's housemate so that probably wasn't an optimal environment. Tangled gets better with every viewing though, as does Brave.

Tangled is high on my "Disney" list.

Brave isn't, but I only watched it once. Maybe it should get another shot.

I went to see Star Wars on its release at the cinema on my own because Mrs W is not a sci-fi fan and I have no RL friends who would go with me. It was OK, but each time I’ve seen it since, I’ve picked more and more holes in it. I just didn’t bother to watch any of them after The Phantom Menace because it had got to the point where they annoyed me on first viewing.

Similarly, I liked the original Italian Job on first viewing, but I can’t watch it at all now.

I started watching The Princess Bride a couple of years ago, because a lot of people rave over it, and gave up after about 20 minutes because it didn’t appeal to me.
