To me the music isn't a deal breaker, but it does mean I'd not want to pay full price for this. Especially given how the game does look kinda cheap in quite a few ways. I don't see what the advantage of playing this over actual Burnout which actually still exists would be.

Have you tried 'actual Burnout' on a large, modern HD telly?

They added Burnout Revenge to backwards compat on XB1, that is not a pretty game on a 55 inch telly, distractingly so. I got a way in with it but it's just so fucking muddy to look at I had to give up.

Also, £25 is not 'full price'.

Well I still contend it's very reasonably priced, with or without a licensed soundtrack.

Trousers said he would just hum whilst playing, which I reckon is nice out of the box thinking.

Yes. I have played Burnout Paradise very recently.

£25 is full price if it's a £25 game.

Sorry I should have been clearer, BP was always a native 720p game. Try Burnout Revenge backwards-compat (which was a refresh of an XBox original game of course) or earlier.

BP has held up very well.

I also played Burnout 3 not that long ago, the PS2 version. It looked great.

The original version of Burnout Paradise works fine at 4k on PC...

Edit: and Burnout Revenge is 720p on Xbox 360 or Xbox One.

Yes I know, but it very much looked to me like an upscale of the original game. Compare Revenge and Paradise (both '720p' games) on the same setup and Paradise looks miles better. All I can say for sure is that playing through Revenge on backwards compat on my XB1X, on a 55 inch telly, eventually just put me off with the muddiness of the graphics.

Anyway, back to DANGEROUS DRIVING I finished the SUV campaign last night and had loads more fun with it.

The limited track selection works in its favour as I'm actually starting to learn the tracks now, and I'm increasingly sold on using Spotify for the ingame music, there's no game in the world that could afford to license the tracks that are being used in the various Dangerous Driving playlists found on Spotify.

I also like that it's a totally linear start to finish campaign, so one can play for 30 minutes or so, knock a handful of events off, and know that meaningful progress has been made.

I feel like I'm going backwards in FH4 as if i fire it up after a break of 3-4 weeks, thinking I'll knock down a few more events, I find they've actually added more stuff than I'm going to get through. Yes that's great if all you want to do is play FH4, but to me it's just starting to feel like a game I'll never finish.

So yes, Dangerous Driving, me like.

Case in point. (And remember it didn't get any sort of 'remaster' on XB1, it was just backwards compat.)

I'm not sure what point an obviously jpg compressed still of an obviously compressed youtube video is supposed to demonstrate. That's not how that game looked on any of those systems.

The 360 version wasn't upscaled to 720p, it ran natively at 720p, although the 360 would scale it to whatever resolution output you had selected.

Yes Burnout Paradise is for the most part a better looking game, but that's not primarily because of resolution, it would even be a better looking game at sub-720p resolutions.

I think Dangerous Driving looks cheap not because of resolution, but because the vehicle models are unappealing, the tracks look barren (I don't think there are any urban environments), the UI features a lot of Windows 95 looking wordart, and the animations and camera movement is far less dynamic than in any of the better Burnout games. These would all still apply were it to be being played in 4k, 8k or 16k resolution.

Edit: But if you are enjoying it, that's great, and I hope you continue to enjoy it.

The video is in 1080p, just take a quick look at it and you'll get a good idea, and yes of course I appreciate it's still compressed.

Direct timestamped link - https://youtu.be/8aPkNvSwv40?t=74

They put in a motion blur effect for the 360 version, and with the rather 'brown' look of the graphics and the speed the game barrels along at in the faster classes, I remember quite clearly playing it in backwards compat on my XB1X and thinking 'I can't quite even work out what the fuck is going on here'.

Irrespective of resolution, Paradise looks a lot cleaner and sharper on a big modern telly, at least to me. Maybe it's just my old man eyes.

As to your wider point, I agree that DD does look a bit 'cheap', for all the reasons that we've discussed in this thread already, but for me it doesn't compromise the fact that it's a fun game.

HOWEVER - you can sort of cheese it, as it seems that in some race types the AI doesn't boost unless you boost, so you just need to get to the front of the pack with a nice full boost bar, and then basically cruise the rest of the race, using your boost to get back to the front if something slows you down.

They could do with fixing that, and I'll be the first to concede that were it not for the fact I chill a bit and just enjoy the music at that stage, the lack of Spotify Premium would really hurt it.

I have Spotify Premium but don't have a current gen console on which to play this game, but it sounds neat - I loved me a bit of burnout

I played more of this last night. It is routinely as unfair as a Zimbabwean election, to the extent that I ended up shouting, 'Oh fuck off you fucking CUNT' at the telly, and then immediately restarted the race to have another go.

It's unfair in exactly the same way that the old Burnout games were, so it's down to whether or not you're up for more of that. But oh so satisfying when you finally get the first place. It's a bit like the higher skill levels on a Mario Kart game, you need a lot of skill, but also a dollop of luck sometimes to land the win.

The Spotify playlists have become one of my favourite things in gaming, not just in this game, but in games full stop. I literally have no idea what music is coming up next, but it's always something cool that fits the game.

As for this game, there are a few wonky things about it, nothing game breaking but clearly stuff that needed a bit more time and polish, however I'll give it a pass because when you're fully in the zone, boosting like a bastard and hitting an almost zen like state of switched on brilliance on a Takedown Hot Streak, as Iron Maiden are blasting out of the speakers, it's a bit fucking special.

TBH I don't think the game comes off too badly in that review, insofar as if you were looking for a modern take on Burnout, then Dangerous Driving comes across as very much looking like exactly that.

I've never had that 'fall through the floor' bug although I have seen some weird physics with the crash barriers. Also I've never had the framerate drop through the floor like that either.

The Joes didn't seem to know that drifting is the way to get around corners (and the game does explicitly tell you this if you didn't know), it was quite painful watching them fail miserably at the first time trial, which is all about getting on the boost and staying there, with high risk boost drifting around corners required to get the gold.

I quite like Angry Joe's videos and I found this one entertaining too, despite the fact I very much disagree with his conclusion.
