That’s a daft suggestion. Google wouldn’t shoulder the entire burden of those losses and no right minded publisher would sign up to the possibility of refunding all/any revenue to the consumer at some indefinite point in the future creating huge cash flow problems and losses. They might not even exist in the future which would create a problem for the consumer under those terms.

A sensible suggestion would be to just let the consumer download a digital copy.

I am open to correction on this, but my understanding is that Google don't decide what ads to show you. Google decide that what they know about you is that you are male, 40s, living on the Isle of Man, with a list of interests. So it puts you in a number of different buckets. Advertisers go to Google and say "I want to show this ad for Football to Men in their 40s", choose the relevant buckets, and away you go.

You get ads for football because advertisers think men in their 40s like football, not because Google thinks you like football.

Additionally, go to sites running ads and buy stuff for your wife or kids, and suddenly your buckets are all over the place.

I think there's a Google page where it lists the things it thinks you like, but buggered if I can remember where that is.

Oh OK I thought it was cleverer than that, thanks for explaining. If BEEX had a Like button I would Like your post.

Then again, HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THE ICELAND PIES THING?

https://www.beexcellenttoeachother.com/ ... 3#p1025283

I remember once I searched for 'Iceland pies' to demonstrate the amazing fat content of these remarkably calorie-laden steak pies to a chum at work, and YouTube then showed me ads for holidays to Iceland for fucking MONTHS, despite the fact I have no interest in travelling whatsoever and nothing about my device usage would point in that direction. Really? That's as advanced as their analytics are?

Which defies the point of the thing. It just becomes Google Console then. The whole thing lives and dies on it's gimmick.

Now, if it was "one fee, access all the stuff" it makes way more sense. This halfway house "you get some stuff if you subscribe, but you'll have to buy some stuff, or you don't have to subscribe but you have to buy everything" model sucks. I'm guessing the publishers said "fuck no" to the Spotify model, though.

Yes. One small addendum: when more than one advertiser has declared interest in buckets you match (ie all the time), there is a computerised real-time auction. The ad you see was the highest bidder. This happens regardless of whether it was likely to be more or less relevant to you.

For example, holiday tour operators will spend big money buying out searches for keywords like “Florida” in January with very broad targeting. Doesn’t matter if there’s nothing in your profile that suggests you’d go on holiday to Florida and you were looking it up for climate change info — if the advertiser bids high enough, you can still see adverts for Disneyworld.

Football, rugby, jazz, travel, and mountain & ski resorts stand out to me as being amusingly wide of the mark.

Oh, and accounting & financial software. (?)

The list is mostly pretty accurate though, so fuck knows why it chooses to keep showing me adverts for trips to Dubai, a country you literally couldn't pay me to visit. Oh and it's started doing adverts for safaris in Kenya recently too.

Maybe they're paying more, as DocG explained above.

Age and income band (if they know that) probably. Generally speaking people who can afford it will go on holiday, so you advertise your country at them to make them want to go there. It's not like only people go to certain holiday destinations so that seems like the kind of thing it's worth casting a wide net for.

Presumably, if it's a real time auction, there's always a chance that no one is interested in you specifically right now, and so you drop down to whatever matress store or worldwide tourism campaign is currently offering some fraction of a cent to display to anyone. Still, google ads are way more focused then the random crap I get via facebook.

Download a digital copy for what exactly? The whole pitch of Stadia relies on you not needing to own a console or a gaming PC.

PC.

But Stadia is for people that don't have a gaming PC.

Post subject:  Re: Google Stadia

Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo are unlikely to let you download a free version for your console of choice, so PCs likely to be the only available option.

Plus Stadia isn’t necessarily for people without a PC altogether. Stadia is supposed to run 4K 60 so people with less beefy specs and/or who don’t have the money to upgrade their rig can enjoy high end PC gaming. One of the methods of delivery of the service is supposed to be through a browser so you’ll need a PC to access Stadia via that method.

Post subject:  Re: Google Stadia

So are these games to be sold with a disclaimer stating that you'll need a gaming PC to play them in the event of the servers getting switched off?

I would posit that they could and would not offer a PC version of these games to make up for revoking people's access. Or at least they would not do so as if it were a solution for all customers.

No idea what they would actually do in the event of wanting to end the service. I'd be very interested to see what the user agreement is on games that they are selling. I am expecting language that says "we can turn this off at any point without owing you anything".

This is obviously the likely response, but we were discussing what other options were available to them rather than just “trust us”.

Post subject:  Re: Google Stadia

Well it'll come down to "if you don't like it don't buy it". Besides, how many games sold already are going to be essentially useless when servers get switched off? Either due to them being multiplayer or the game having been patched beyond recognition since launch. A lot of people just don't really care about collecting games or replaying old ones.

It will certainly be a messaging challenge. They'll either totally avoid talking about this stuff in detail, or have to choose their words very carefully.

Plenty of games work offline without any connection to remote servers. In fact there will be games for which Stadia is the only platform that will require that, several are already announced as such.

Mrs Hearthly certainly became 'roomier' after Hearthly Jnr had made her way into the world.

The delivery room looked like the set of The Walking Dead after a particularly gruesome bout of zombie killing. 20 hours in labour, episiotomy, and the ventouse (which took several attempts to get right).

I remember surveying the carnage and thinking to myself (rather selfishly), 'That's never going to be the same again'.

Hearthly Jnr looked like one of the Coneheads for a little while, as the ventouse had deformed her skull.

Childbirth, just say no.

I see MS have just added another 50 games to GamePass (some good ones too), I don't see how Stadia is going to find its place in this marketplace. Plus of course we're at the end of a console generation so who wants to invest money into a (soon to be) 'last-gen' games collection?

Either this is just Google testing that all this stuff works OK before they roll out the free version next year, or this is going to crash and burn in spectacular fashion.

Yes but who's going to dump any significant amount of cash into a Google Stadia games collection when they know for the same money they could buy a shiny new Xbox Two or PS5 within a year? Like MS, Sony and the publishers will be keen to cut their own throats by giving Google a great deal on all the shiny new next-gen games.

That's Google's problem here, they don't have any first party content.

This whole Stadia thing sounded very exciting, after my initial scepticism, once it was explained, but now I'm not even remotely convinced, since all the cool stuff doesn't seem to exist yet and won't do for a while.

But that was before we all learned that you need to buy hardware, and the games, and a subscription, to play on Google Stadia.

For the cash investment required to get going on Stadia, folks may as well just buy a console that'll last them five years or more.

Wait, what hardware do you need? There's a controller--which is hardly a high barrier to entry--but even that's optional in that you can pretty much use any controller you've got. And it's not like you're locking yourself to a particular generation of hardware in terms of the box itself, it's just a PC in a rack somewhere that can be upgraded/swapped out as required when game requirements increase over the years. I mean I think it's a shit idea looking for an audience that doesn't really exist, but I don't understand your criticisms here.
