useful for learning where you may be shot from, tactics and the like.

In pubg, you can only see the kill cam once your entire team is gone. to prevent shenanigans.

Yes, this.

I find it interesting to see what gun they used, tactics, if there was more going on than I knew about, etc.

He also sees where people have done bleeding (taken sounds), fires guns, and healed themselves.

His L1 power scans the area.

His Special makes him faster or something? Or gives him claws? Something about being a hunter anyway. I have literally never remembered to use it in the heat of battle.

I had a decent win last night.

I found the awesome drum barrel shorty but got lumbered with that shitty energy LMG all game. My team mates were alright but one bloke kept moaning at me for shotgun shells when I didn’t have any to spare. He’d stand right in my face spamming the “give me ammo” button. And he went down the most and had to be reincarnated twice. I even saved his tag by shotgunning two guys standing over him and when he came back from the dead I saved his ass again when he was looting corpses by shotgunning another guy trying to murder him again. And he still wouldn’t fuck off with spamming “give me shotgun ammo”.

And after all that, me and the other guy both get downed in the final fight and he’s the last one alive in a 1 v 1 which he wins with...a shotgun blast.

Scumbag. Still a wins a win.

I played a fair few rounds of this yesterday, it's pretty good. Also, maybe I got lucky but I didn't find myself in a single bad squad, insofar as everyone was sticking together and helping each other at least, competency levels were variable at best (most notably my own as I'm not very good at it yet, although I was starting to get some kills as the rounds went on, including one where I just punched someone to death as I hadn't found myself a gun at that point).

It's a lot better than PUBG, simply moving around the map feels satisfying. I haven't really got my eye in with all the guns yet, although I'm getting better at 'reading' the various pickups around the map and working out what I do and don't want.

4K@60FPS is just about off the table but it's solid as a rock at 1440p with it all maxed out.

Not sure how the monetisation is going to go for them, since you can't see your character in an FPS game so why would you really care what you look like?

It definitely feels like a Respawn game, and for a game to come straight out of the gates with everything in place and working properly is quite an achievement, considering how releases are often extended beta tests these days.

Anyway, for free it's a bit of a slam dunk really, no reason not to have a look.

Yes. In fact It’s odd. The ping system works so well that when I play with bezzies having chat (and the possibility of misinterpreting what is said) actually can hinder compared to playing with randos.

Yeah the ping system works really, really well. I have been in a couple of squads where one or two of the other people have had headsets and it did help a bit, but overall ping gets the job done. Also, the squads are only three people so the dynamics are somewhat tighter than a Battlefield game for example where the squad size is larger.

Eurogamer have a decent article with some nice starter tips - https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019 ... tures-6014

Also, the tutorial is fairly brief and worth doing.

I played this loads last night, it's really good.

What is not really good however, is me playing it.

I am getting better but there's definitely several levels of ability well above my own. I've started watching the matches play out after I've been deaded and seeing how more competent folks than myself play.

I was at least on a winning squad last night and contributed to the win but the last few minutes were just the last two squad members, the guy who was the last man standing was an absolute fucking boss. He seemed to be going with a sniper/shotgun combo for long+med/short range respectively, and was very good with grenades and healing himself and fixing his shields and stuff.

Also his tactical moving around the map was excellent, and when it got to the final ring his strategy was superb. As we got the CHAMPION banner on the screen I typed a 'well done dude' to him and in a splendidly gentlemanly touch he typed back 'you helped the win too'. (The proper team text chat is great, and the transcribing is a genius touch.)

Great game. Me like a lot.

I know, I was almost quite touched!

TBH we had worked well together as a team, I'd been the healing lass and had chucked out quite a few heals on them, and when I got killed one of them got me to the respawn point, they both waited for my dropship to drop me back in and then escorted me back to where the big fight had happened, and waited whilst I rummaged through the 'coffins' (whatever you want to call the loot crates that dead players leave behind) to get myself re-equipped.

In fairness I haven't had a single duff squad yet, some have been a bit on the cavalier side but I haven't had a single game where someone has run off by themselves or stuff like that.

I've had mostly great teams, but once when I picked up a knocked guy and died a few seconds later he looted my box ( :hat: ) and fucked off, even though there was a respawn point about 100 meters away.

PROHINT! If you win a fight against someone and your shield is fucked, swap it for a shield in their loot box which comes out fully charged. Way quicker than using a shield battery or three.

I've been enjoying the hell out of this, so I chucked them enough money to buy Caustic and Mirage.

Pundy's special tips: when you're diving with the jump master, break off a little early, and target another building to where the jumpmaster is going. More looting ground covered.

If you're choosing where to land, I find you're better off heading perpendicular to the dropships flight, and patience is a virtue.

The problem I have with Bangalore (and Gibraltar) is that the bombardment specials are shit.

PROHINT 3: There's no friendly fire at all, so don't worry about running around during bombardments. I believe the same is true of grenades.

The bombardment is less about killing folk outright and more about making them move position so you shoot them better. I quite like that it’s not so powerful.

I played this a fair bit more last night and I'm sort of getting better but I think everyone else is getting better than me at a greater rate of knots. (There are quite a few people who have hit the level cap already, so fuck knows how much they've been playing it.)

TBH I'm doing well to get a kill most rounds, although I do get a lot of assists and try to use my abilities to help the squad, but some of the people playing are total fucking machines and I feel somewhat outclassed.

Also, it can be annoyingly hard to even get hold of a gun sometimes, and ammo can be surprisingly scarce as well.

Great fun though, I was doing a couple of jobs downstairs and found myself thinking, 'I want another round of Apex Legends', which is the sign of a good game.

Played the tutorial. Got stuck on the bit you have to use your super ability, trying to activate that fucking medi-centre or whatever it is.

Eventually got into a match.

I felt shockingly awkward and inwardly apologetic for how bad I was (I think the small squad size made me feel more accountable).

Managed to land a few shots but no kills. Died within a few minutes.

I think it's probably an excellent game, and one which I'm temperamentally entirely unsuited to.

Post subject:  Re: Apex legends

I think it would benefit from a bot mode on a small map where you can practice with the mechanics, learn the guns, get a good feel for the UI and so on, the tutorial doesn't give you nearly enough 'test pilot' experience IMO.

I had one round a couple of nights ago where the group composition crapped out and I found myself in a squad by myself, and TBH I was relieved! I deliberately jumped down to a remote area of the map, and just took my time playing with the inventory and the weapons and learning how swapping things in and out worked, how things stack in the inventory and so on, how the attachments function etc, without feeling I had to keep up with my squad mates (because I didn't have any).

The key really is not to stress about it when in a real match, I'm routinely the worst player in any given squad but I do my best and work as the most competent team player I'm able to muster.

All I can say is just keep playing rounds, and you'll get better and more comfortable with the mechanics - but yes I agree that it's a big leap from the tutorial to a full game.

End of the day if you're totally crap it doesn't matter, just queue again and have another go with a new squad, with 25 million (!!!!) players already you're not going to get the same folks again in a hurry!

Had a game with APOD where our third wheel died early on and then quit, and the two of us had to go up against other trios. I revived APOD once, but he died again and they camped his corpse. I got some shots in on them but had to leg it in the end.

Managed to hide, or engage from a distance and then flee, and made it to the final or possibly penultimate ring. Got a kill with a thermite grenade too, on purpose!

Ended up in the last 4 squads, but then someone kicked my ass to add to his 500 kills. I got 2 kills though, and 868 damage, which I think is a record for me.

I like the burst assault rifle, though the name escapes me now.
