Yes! Well, I did anyway. There were some small technical issues but overall it was a fun experience. Being fully wireless with a proper gun controller and immersed in the game with seven mates is definitely a brilliant experience! Sadly Mr Dave had quite a few issues with his pack so perhaps he has a different outlook on it.

I enjoyed the zombies game more than the scifi one, but mainly because the guns felt more visceral.

I think we should do it again next year and aim for 16. Then the team who isn’t playing gets to mess around with the other stuff they have while they wait.

Yah, zombie game, I basically had a tracking update rate somewhere in the region of 4 updates per second, and a frame rate probably about 30. with numerous tracking issues (gun suddenly being in my head, view point swaying even when I wasn't, that kind of thing.)

So I basically stood i one spot and shot at repair points. Useful for the rest of the team, but not a great experience.

Second game bugged out entirely until my computer thing was reset. I started to hear everyone playing while i still had a black screen. Even after the reset, it wasn't even in the ballpark on my own (now 3 year old, so cutting edge has moved on) vr setup.

Was it all bespoke kit?

I think so. the tracking seemed based on the psvr bulb things, but with flashy multicolour bulbs.

Dave, you really should’ve said something a lot earlier. They couldn’t have fixed it if you didn’t say anything.

I’d have been moaning the whole time. :D

I totally forgot to say Things about this. And I'll do that properly later but, suffice it to say, it was brilliant fun. Slightly janky in places as you'd expect, but given what they've pulled off here it's genuinely incredibly technically impressive. And just really bloody good fun even if you don't care about the tech stuff! You're shooting zombies in the face with friends while wielding a big huge physical gun that has a real life solid pump-action reloader on it. What's not to love?

Also, I was awesome:

Tech-wise, they've got a page that talks about licensing their stuff which says, "Developed in collaboration with HP, Microsoft and Intel..." which makes me assume it's built on the WMR platform, and having each individual headset do its own inside-out tracking would certainly make more sense in this scenario. Presumably the backpack they give you is a PC linked to the helmet/gun with a central server bringing everything together. Which also explains how poor Dave can have a shit experience with a fucked backpack while everyone else could be unaffected. If that's true, the most impressive part is being able to stuff a relevantly specced PC into a backpack and have it perform for hours without exploding. How are they dealing with the heat issue I wonder?

They at least had one full set of spares. We went for 40 minutes or so (2 sessions), but the next group were already kitted up, so they could just shut ours down and chuck them in a cold room ready for the next lot.

It certainly wasn't doing inside out tracking. You could see the cameras on the ceiling.

Except for the guns which we had to lay down in front of them. I told the guy getting mine it was faulty. :D

I was a little bit underwhelmed by the experience to be honest. Resolution and tracking issues aside, both of which seemed inferior to my Rift setup, I just didn't really think that much of the games either.

The whole thing could be immeasurably improved IMO by having it be either more co-operative in nature, or have it be adversarial (in a 4v4 setup for example) - as it stands, there wasn't really any co-op play to speak of other than just shooting at the same enemies, and in the space game in particular everyone was so close together that my immersion was basically destroyed by the constant proximity warnings appearing on the screen in front of me.

Or when the bridge you're on disappears and you're suddenly in space

To be fair, though, maybe we just chose poorly. There are other game options, there’s another zombie one that says about navigating the streets. The zombie one we played literally said “you’re stuck in a fort killing wave after wave of the undead”.
Also it is still really early days, it looks like there are a few other game options that aren’t out in Nottingham yet.

I would definitely go again (which is partly why I’m buying my brother a gift voucher for his birthday) but would like to try the other games.

Ah, that’d explain the size of the room then - I was wondering why they had such a big play space for the two games we played :)

It was still good fun, and I’d definitely do it again, it just felt a bit less “multiplayer” than I’d expected I guess :)

I was specifically responding to the bit about hot PCs though.

the guns were also fairly simple, I'd imagine.two lights, and 4 switches sending a wireless signal.
