I was impressed that of the two sauces you could have with your steak at the pub I ate at this evening, one was marked as suitable for vegetarians.

I sometimes used to play it, deliberately NOT rotating the pieces, to make it a bit more tricky.

We were using Olivetti PCs as dumb terminals at the time and you could only access the floppy drive if you had admin rights, so only the IT team could play it. We played the IBM PC version. No fancy backgrounds, whistles, bells or other distracting crap, just the very basic game and I still prefer it to all the fancier versions I played EXCEPT when we got the 3D version which used to swallow up my whole lunch break every day for weeks.

You should invest in a PS4 VR. Tetris Effect can be very transcendental. Has relieved me from many a daytime gripe.

I wonder if that just applies to the NES version though.

Interesting that they objected to the 'extreme violence' though (and suggested certification).. I've never really considered Double Dragon all that violent, perhaps because the violence is pretty cartoony, particularly on the home versions.

The fact that a women gets punched in the gut by a gang of guys, one wielding a machine gun, is enough to convince me that it's pretty violent.

Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 50

Oh it's certainly a violent game. My point was that as a kid playing stuff like Double Dragon, Final Fight and Operation Wolf in arcades, I never really gave the level of violence much thought. I used to play Target:Renegade a lot on the spectrum and I don't remember much fuss over that either. It seemed to be more when the likes of bloodier games like Mortal Kombat came along that people really kicked off, so it's interesting to see complaints about a NES game for much the same thing.

My memory is pretty bad so maybe there's always been outrage over this sort of game and I just don't remember it. :)

Yeah, I wondered that too. Looking on Wikipedia's list of controversial video games, I never knew that Barbarian was banned in Germany (while everyone else complained about the cover art instead :) )

I've had an email today:

Quote:
I’m a researcher working with the UK-media company Storythings to develop a brand new series for Discovery UK about pop culture and memorabilia through time.

For our pilot episode, we’re looking at major pop cultural events in 1980 – among them, the launch of Pac-Man. I’m looking for UK-based, passionate fans of Pac-Man (and-or other video games from the early 1980s) who collect fascinating memorabilia.

I was wondering if you knew of any people who fit this description? Anyone you suggest I come in contact with?

Any takers?

To be honest you could replace ‘Pacman’ with just about any game, cartoon, toy series, TV show or other form of character franchise and TheVision would be able to whip you up a museum-worthy collection from his parents’ Aladdin’s cave of an attic.

I am at that age when I can nod off at almost any time of day when I'm not involved in some task or other activity. I have to set the timer on my phone at lunch time in case I fall asleep in the van and it's really not a comfortable place for a nap.

My Dad has always had the rather enviable talent of being able to fall asleep anywhere, with any level of noise. Meanwhile, I can't nap unless I'm literally at deaths door.

I always used to have an issue with sleeping if not in my own bed, but I did a project in Dublin for 9 months, which meant I was up at 4:30am on a Monday and on the first flight out of the day.
I'd catch up on sleep on the flight and ever since then I can sleep anywhere.
