By the way, if Alexa or Google home were recording and transmitting without the 'activation' words being used, it'd be incredibly easy to detect that it was doing so. The fact that nobody has should tell you something.

The amount of people who genuinely believe that this is all a BBC decision and not something driven by the conservative government is depressing, though not all that surprising any more.

Politics In this era has transcended anyone caring about truth or accuracy. Look at Trump, who can tell ten lies a minute. Ten plain, clear, obvious to everyone lies. 60% of people shrug it off as unimportant that he’s lying, the ones that realise it and dislike it just can’t keep up. By the time one once-shocking thing has been said, twenty more have followed. The thing is you are bombarded by so many outrageous lies and actions that you can’t focus. And our government have just gone ‘Yes! That’s the best way to be evil and unaccountable’ so we are ushering in his British protege and then we’ll have Boris and Trump, two of the most evil leaders showing a buffoons face to get away with it. It literally will not matter one bit what they do. Remember all the WTF people used to feel o we some of Putin’s ridiculous claims about his virility, etc? We have exactly that with Trump, and his intelligence, which is more ridiculous.

Gosh, I get so worked up thinking about this I can’t even keep track of what I was going to say.

Yes, so it doesn’t matter that this is the government that have pushed the situation to this. They can say ‘look what the BBC are doing’ and then everyone just plays merrily along.

This is why Johnson's first act as PM will be, following the pilot blame-shifting scheme with the over-75s' licenses, to quietly transfer existing responsibilities of the EU, with regard to the UK, to the BBC. Then, when everything goes tits-up, the government have a ready-made scapegoat, that the public has already been predisposed towards disliking because the BBC bullies grannies or something.

Top tip with regard to Echoes: if you have one in the same room as a baby monitor camera, and another one in the same room as a baby monitor screen, make sure you set the wake words to be different.

What the fuck is this: have you ever googled “dog”?

Then google says “Do you want to meet a life size dog” and you click on it and you just swing round a 3D model of a dog but if you’re on a phone you can do the AR thing.

Weird.

There’s one for “cat” as well. I’ve done a load of other animals and there doesn’t appear to be any others weirdly.

After writing out a letter and sealing it in an envelope, does anybody else become increasingly worried that instead of politeness they've just scrawled "ARGHHJ! FUCK! FUCK YOU CUNT !" or something? So much so you have to go and open the letter again to make sure?

Yep!

Also emails. I have intense panic after pressing send on any email correspondence.

No, but I tend not to seal envelopes until absolutely the last moment, just in case

There was once a city trader guy who accidently sold 10,000 thingies at $1 instead of one thingy at $10,000 and lost his company millions of dollars in about 10 seconds. I'm constantly worried I'll do something similar and put the bank account number into the "amount" field and somehow end up £50 million quid overdrawn.

The optional 10-second grace period on Gmail is really helpful for reducing this stress.

As for envelopes, I still shake birthday cards I get from relatives just in case they slipped a tenner in.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!

I'm so glad it's not just me. I constantly go back and read emails hours later just in case I've called the recipient by the wrong name, or copied in some complete stranger into private correspondence etc. I triple check bank transfers (and then repeatedly log back in to check). I check appointment times, train times, bus times again and again. :S

Particularly with the extra GDPR regulations, I'm convinced I'm going to send a work email to the wrong client. And it'll no doubt be one where I've attached some important file too.

I was at a charity auction once that was using little tablets for bids. I was going to put in a lowball bid on something, and put my PIN in to unlock the thing. It was, turns out, already unlocked and I very, very nearly bid £12,345 on a painting.

Yes. To the extend that at least once I've opened a card I'd written to my wife, because I convinced myself I'd written my first wife's name in it. (I hadn't, it turned out.)

I don’t obsess over emails or letters etc. I check what I’m about to write, write it and then BLAMMO send. Like a boss.

However I do lock my car doors at least twice as I can never remember doing it the first time. And I’m always checking the front door is locked as I go past.

I can never remember if I have put on deodorant or not after I get out the shower, so I always do it twice, once before I clean my teeth and once after. Well, I assume I do it twice, I could be entirely right and only be doing it once after I clean my teeth after all...

The really annoying thing is that I can remember thinking to myself "today I am going to concentrate and remember that I put on deodorant this time", but post teeth cleaning I can't remember if that thought was from today or a previous day.

... thinking about it, I wonder if short term memory is stored on your teeth to start with? Maybe I am scrubbing the memories away?

Short term memory is much shorter than most people realise and there are known triggers that reset it, like walking through a door into another room, or climbing stairs

You could…sniff your armpits to see if they smell of deodorant or just soap/shower gel?

I can never remember if I have put on deodorant or not after I get out the shower, so I always do it twice, once before I clean my teeth and once after. Well, I assume I do it twice, I could be entirely right and only be doing it once after I clean my teeth after all...

The really annoying thing is that I can remember thinking to myself "today I am going to concentrate and remember that I put on deodorant this time", but post teeth cleaning I can't remember if that thought was from today or a previous day.

... thinking about it, I wonder if short term memory is stored on your teeth to start with? Maybe I am scrubbing the memories away?

You could…sniff your armpits to see if they smell of deodorant or just soap/shower gel?

But that would mean I need to remember what my deodorant smells of, this is also an issue.

I was wondering abou the abusive messages with dubious items of ninja gear that had been arriving...
