What am I missing here? It's pretty fucking far from being the worst thing they'll get away with in return for their lovely money.

It's awful, but how is it any different to what America has been doing in the middle east for 30 years?

Hello, Mr Milne!

It just fascinates me as to what people will take notice of and what they don't.

It's not that this isn't a story, it certainly is. I just don't understand why it's more of a story than millions starving in Yemen in part thanks to Great Britain.

But nice personal insults from someone who I consider a friend!

The Yemen stuff is being covered in some media, I've seen it on C4 news and in the Guardian etc

I think what makes this bigger in people's minds is that he was a journalist who had written for Western Press and been on the BBC and so on. It's the whole Monkeysphere thing.

Even with a regime as evil as Saudi Arabia, there's something uniquely horrific about someone going to their country's embassy and inside being murdered by the regime.

Wow. I’m really impressed with POTUS’s action to sanction the suspects of the Khashoggi murder, by revoking their visas. That’ll teach ‘em.

And now it’s bsck to flogging the Saudi’s more weapons. Murder is only murder, but business is business.

I see we are gearing up to "argue about the poppy symbol" season. I feel that the poppy has been hijacked as a form of nationalism*, now, and I'm not at all comfortable with that.Which is why I won't wear one.

*I also find the "Help For Heroes" thing unsettling as elevating anyone who has been in the army to hero status doesn't seem right. A step too far in the direction of the US I fear.

Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 50

Even organisations who you would expect to respect what it's all meant to be about seem to have lost the fucking plot. It's all "a river of a million poppies" or, as I half heard on the news this morning, "a giant six metre poppy!", trying to outdo last year like it's Christmas decorations or something. I guess it's because the events are passing from living memory and soon it'll probably be just another yearly festival, detached from any real meaning at all.

But then again those who did fight in the wars would probably think that struggling to get people to solemnly remember what it was like when there were regular all out wars between large countries is rather an unexpectedly nice problem for their grandchildren to have.

Yes, I'm increasingly uncomfortable with gaudy displays and anything other than a quiet token of respect and the formal civic religion event at the Cenotaph. But as those with a direct connection to the world wars pass away, we're going to lose that connection. Memorial Day in the US is now just a big party.

That's awful. Aboslutely nothing about it makes me pause and reflect. The Windsor Castle display a few years back, with the thousands of poppies pouring out over the walls, looked genuniely moving (I only saw pictures) and, as all art should, caused an emotional response in the viewer.

Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 50

I have a small enamel poppy pin, that normally I forget to wear. Think I've always donated though, if not me directly, then through giving my kids money to put in at school.

Those huge displays are awful. I know they've been trying to create something bigger due to the 100th anniversary this year, but the tone is wrong.

I don't think there's anything more poignant than a faded to pink giant poppy zip tied to the front of a Rover 75.
